We have Terminal services environment -  windows 2012 R2 running on KVM. Our infra setup is as below:

3 Remote desktop session host servers on windows 2012 R2

1 windows 2012 R2 server which has the Broker, licensing and gateway roles installed

1 Published App server

We are using user profile disks that are stored on a 2012 file share.

AD is on Windows 2008.

When users login, it takes around and sometimes 7 minutes to login, we get a black screen for about a minute a 2. Performance also seems to be an issue at times. We have roughly around 70 users which are equally load balanced by the broker.

Troubleshooting done:

Checked if VMQ is disabled

Disabled SMB signing

Disabled all login scripts

Checked all GPOs

Disabled bitmap caching

Logged on locally with the administrator account which again has no group memberships, login scripts and is not a domain user. This account still has the same issue.

Windows is updated as of last month.

What iv'e noticed is since the Published APP server isn't part of the RDS session host farm, users are able to login to it quickly as i would expect. 

Can someone shed some light. We've been struggling with this since we've moved users from 2008 R2 to 2012
R2.

Since then I've made some changes in the GPO's, but this seemed to have the affect that a lot of users now get TEMP profiles in de RDS environment regularly.

The Event Viewer System logs show these messages:
Event ID 16: The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\USERNAME\ntuser.dat was cleared updating 2157 keys and creating 297 modified pages.
Event ID 16: The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat was cleared updating 367 keys and creating 47 modified pages.

Also there are a lot of these events logged:
Event ID 20499: Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from serverboth DC's for user USERNAME

This leaves the User Profile Disk corrupt and the only way to resolve this is to restore the UPD from an earlier moment.

Any thoughts?
I see a lot of RDS logs and searching online give a lot of results (non-related) back.

I could use some help. I built out a Windows Server 2012 Server to host some specific applications for our organization.  It is a 1 server system Serving less than 50 users with no more that 4-8 connected at one time. On the server (epcrterm2012.countyes.local) the following roles reside: RDCB, RDSH, RDGW, RDWA and RDLicensing.



On epcrterm2012 I have one collection with 8 apps. This configuration has worked well for a couple of years. In the last 6 months I began to have problems with users logging in, both internally and externally due to untrusted certificates.

Last week I completely redid the environment. One mistake I initially made was I had the RDGW on a separate box, Win2012RDGate. When I redid did the environment, I put all the roles on epcrterm2012, so when I created my certs they all pointed to the epcrterm2012 and now they are all trusted.



Currently, all users within the domain can open the shorcuts to the remote apps but they cannot setup the Remote Apps and Desktop connections (RADC). User receive the following error.



If I open https://epcrterm2012/RDweb in Firefox and copy the links, the users can open them fine, but not through the RADC. They also are able to open the Remote Apps through https://epcrterm2012/RDweb.

I feel like I've read 1000 webpages and still not sure where the problem lies.

I think I'll stop here for now and see if any one can offer any insight on how to troubleshoot this.

This is more of a security question than anything, just wondering if remote access has to be enabled for RDP to work on Win server 2012?  

And with even more details, I guess what I am asking is what is the bare minimum requirements to run RDP?  I am assuming that I still need my router setup for DDNS and a domain with working CA even for RDP to work remotely.

I have a few problems :p
First one is a problem with the creating reports of my RDS CALs usage. Error is something like that "Fail generete a report" - nothing more...
In the event viewer I found information about the ancident. The ID of this warning is 4108. I check my DNS server but looks normal. I can ping localhost, my ethernet card and others computers, so I don't know what is going on...

The second I can't backup my system state and RDS data files because my system files is NTFS and I got an error "The reqested operation could not be completed due a file ststem limitation".

With both of these issue I'm afraid migration. I don't have backup and if DNS works badly the license server could not find new serveror even worsea problemoccursduring thetransfer :/
What should I do?

While taking remote access to the server system previously i was able to launch the application from start the following program on connection that is available under remote desktop connection>>programs!!the path i provided is similar to this C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe. From last week i am getting this error "ACCESS IS DENIED THIS INITIAL PROGRAM CANNOT BE STARTED:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NOTEPAD.EXE".what might be the issue??

I'm current installed server 2012 which is not a PDC or BDC. Were using it for remote applications. This server is not is not running DHPC or DNS. I've installed the remote desktop services and setup a small farm. I can log to RD web locally but not on remote sites. I can logon the web sit with my account on the remote sites but when i try to run the application i get the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable. I've tried multiple different things from browsing the web and nothing seems to work. Any ideas

Remote Desktop Manager not showing UDP connections on my 2012 R2 gateways. UDP 3391 is enabled and open externally through a Nat. 

I do have two gateways that are load balanced using Microsoft NLB. UDP is enabled on both gateways and VIP is NAT'd in the firewall with 443 and UDP 3391 open. I have seen randomly that a UDP will show up in the manager, but only one. I expect to see an http connection along with two UDP connections.

Is there a reason why I am not seeing the UDP connections come in, or only seeing them randomly? I have it working on the other gateways but they are not load balanced and single gateway instances. It doesn't seem to be related to policy or anything.

I'm thinking about reinstalling the MS NLB.

I have a asus laptop specs: windows 7 os. I installed a game and when I try to open it it gives a error as

I am getting more than a little frustrated when the only answer I can find from Microsoft is "It is there" over and over and over again when it clearly isn't. Anyhow know how to actually import this module in Server 2012?

We have an RDS set up running on Server 2012R2 where a lot of our users have multiple screens.  When shadowing these users the 2 screens will be shrunk to 1 window. This makes assisting these usersvery tricky sometimes!

Is there a hidden feature somewhere to disable this feature so that we accomplish one, or both, of these scenarios:

- Shadowing a user with 2 screens should result in a window where you can scroll between the 2 screens
- Shadowing a user with 2 screens should allow me to span the session across my own 2 monitors

Preferably I'll have the shadow session on my 1 screen and I scroll between the two. This allows me to access my own information whilst I'm assisting a user. However having it span across the 2 monitors would be a workable solution.

Firstly let me apologise if this is in the wrong section.

I have recently installed a new application to a terminal server farm.

This is now the desired default application to handle the SIP protocol.

Despite the fact I have gone in to each member server and assigned the correct application to the protocol, both as a user and as an Admin, the behaviour is still thus:

User clicks the SIP link

Internet explorer opens

gives security warning and attempts to load Lync/Skype for business.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Could this be a user profile issue? Is there something I can tweak in the registry?

We have a Windows 2008 Terminal Server in a workgroup. We need to disable internet for Remote Desktop Users but there is no option to add proxy server under Local Group Policy.

Ok I have Windows server essentials 2012 r2 installed as the DC and ran through the Anywhere access setup using an MS account to save on the certificate. So far so good.

I have added to the domain a second server 2012 R2 std to be used by 5 remote workers. This is to be the RDS server.

I have been doing a lot of head scratching on where to install the rds deployment and which server requires which roles.

I think the gateway needs to stay on the DC but I read that once essentials is a DC you cannot add rds services. If I run the rds setup on the second server (which I presume is right) which roles do I install and how does the gateway on the DC know to connect incoming connections to it?

I also read the license server for my 5 rds cals should be on the Essential server but how?

I can't find a setup guide for this which I would have thought is a fairly common usage?

how do terminal server 2012 / RDS servers handle services like anti virus and patching

Anti virus software is installed in install mode. What happens when the AV service downloads new DATs and engines, is TS smart enough to install these in install mode?

What about MS patches, is terminal server smart enough to put these on in install mode automatically if you are using services like SUS?

We have just setup a Remote Desktop Services infrastructure using Windows Server 2012 R2.  Every hour on the 56th minute (Ex. 7:56, 8:56, 9:56, etc.), the connection to either a virtual desktop or a remote desktop connection through the gateway is disconnected. It attempts to reconnect the session for the next three minutes, but stability is not guaranteed until after the 59th minute in the hour.

I have reviewed the CAP and RAP policies and see no issues there.  I have reviewed the logs including the TerminalServices-Gateway logs and see no errors other than informational messages like this:

The user "domain\user", on client computer "IPADDRESS", disconnected from the following network resource: "SERVER NAME". Before the user disconnected, the client transferred 4180 bytes and received 3904 bytes. The client session duration was 8 seconds. Connection protocol used: "HTTP".

I have an RDS collection using 2012 R2 licence server with Per Device licences installed. All clients are Windows 7. Some clients have been allocated a licence and keep this licence assigned until it expires.

Other desktops get assigned a licence, each time they use a remoteapp, so in the issued licence list from WMI, they have multiple assigned licences all of which are active. The desktop HWID is the same, the only thing I notice is that the licences are IssuedTo to SYSTEM account but in the cases where the licences are assigned correctly, they are IssuedTo a named user in the domain. I think this might be permissions related, have read about licensing requiring AD attribute changes but that seems to only be for per user licences

I have 3 very strong desktop pc’s here and I want to run 3 terminals to each one so that would make a total of 9 terminals using a remote desktop kind of solution.

I need a bit of guidance regarding licensing for the remote desktop session on each desktop and obviously the terminals would have to be wireless so they could connect to the network and mouse and keyboard.

I am installing new Server 2008 R2 RDS Servers.  We do NOT use a Farm.  I have existing Server 2008 R2 RDS Servers.

I want to migrate my users profiles to the new server (which will be configured w/ same software, etc.)

I have tried Robocopy and exporting/importing the Profile GUID/SID into registry AND tried restoring the profile to the new server from Backup along w/ GUID/SID import.

User gets temp profile when logging on.  If I delete the imported registry SID for the user, they receive a new profile.

Anyone have a link to a good set of instructions and/or recommendations for how to do this?  Also, will recommended process work with 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 migration?
