RemoteFX Performance

Hi

I seem to be getting a very poor Client experience through Hyper-V with RemoteFX enabled & oddly would even say that the user experience is worse than when just using the default graphics adapter.

We are running on a new IBM X3500 M4 with 2 E5-2620 6C processors 64Gb of DDR3 memory and a single ATI FireProV5900 Graphics card 2 networks 1 for management 1 for VM’s all TCP offloading disabled.

The performance of the system is very good as you would expect when running only a handful of client VM’s, & when we benchmarked the host Graphics card it scores a relatively respectable 12522 on 3Dmark06 obviously it is a Pro graphics card “as required” so will never be great at normal benchmarks but it is not too bad.

What we are seeing is when you have a RemoteFX enabled VM (4Core, 4GB Static) and do simple things like open a web browser on “MSN” you get a very slow page build and stuttering and juddering in all the flash windows, if you move the explorer window around a bit you get even more lag and jerkiness. The surprising thing is if you remove the RemoteFx adapter everything seems to speed up and you no longer get lag.

I have checked and RemoteFX is definitely being initiated and used as all the performance counters and the Information Event ID 2 “Remote Desktop Protocol will use RemoteFX module to connect to the client computer. RemoteFX module is being used based on the server configuration, client configuration, and network connection.”

Is being logged on the guest VM, in addition to the Microsoft checks I have also run 3D mark inside the VM and with RemoteFX enabled posts a not to bad score of around 4200 whereas Disabled the Benchmarks can’t run “no DX9”.

Needless to say that when using a VM over plane old RDP Perceivable performance is significantly better webpages Flash Java everything seems to be allot crisper and flowing.

What is odd is I have Run Flash benchmarkshttp://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/465908 RemoteFX gets better scores but it feels like the RDP presentation of RemoteFX is what is holding it back rather than the raw performance of the system.

Any Ideas or information would be very helpful

Many thanks

James
