Why is a simple RDWeb deployment so frustratingly difficult?

$

Win server 2012 r2

Joined to Domain.local as RDWEBSVR.domain.local

installed all 185 critical and recommended updates.

created certificate for outside.FQDN.com

set up firewall to pass https: to/from RDWESVR.domain.local using outside.FQDN.com

added RDWeb role as a single server deployment. All rolls are on the same server using quick deployment. All domain users given access.

added outside.FQDN.com cert to gateway.

added RD licensing.

verified port 443 not blocked by firewall.

checked LAN client connectivity.  First logon to gain access to Web apps -OK.  second Logon to launch Web Apps -OK Apps launch fine.

Next Checked access from outside of LAN.  First Logon to gain access to WEB Apps -OK.  Second Logon to launch Web-Apps -OK, however receive error message that server cannot be found and will not launch.

verified that https://outside.FQDN.com/rdweb could be launched and Apps worked correctly from deployed server.

verified iis RDWeb pages TSGateway value as outside.FQDN.com

ran set-RDPublishedName.PS1 and set name to outside.FQDN.com

neither of these made any difference.

Checked RD server farm verified that outside.FQDN.com was selected and it showed "OK".

What have I missed?

User Profile Disks - Duplicating User Folders

$

Hi All,

Im setting up User Profile Disks on a Windows 2019 RDS farm. A requirement is that the local registry data needs to be stored on each host in the collection.

The UPD gets created and mounts successfully to C:\users\%username%. When the user logs off all the roamed data saves to the UPD, however, what remains is the local files which we specified as expected.

E.g. NTUSER.dat which holds they current user registry data.

When the user goes to re-login and the UPD goes to re-mount in the location specified by the user profile service. Instead of what I imagine should be happening a merge with the local files and the roamed data into the one user folder another is created as %username% is taken and %username%.000 is made.

My question is should there be a merge happening or does the whole profile need to roam for this to work correctly?

Thank you

Can't Sign into Remotedesktop-Webclient on RDS 2019

Hello friends,

We've recently installed Windows server 2019 for RD Gateway including RD Web and Connection Broker. We use the latest Microsoft Remotedesktop Webclient  (https://<fqdn>/RDWeb/webclient/index.html) and an additional serevr 2019 as session host.
SSL certificate for the RD gateway is public and trusted.
Internal connections work fine w/o any problems and we are always able to signin to our remote desktop webclient.
External connections fail with the following message:"Sign in failed. Please check your user name and password and try again".
I have really no idea what's wrong and would appreciate any help.

Best regards,

Sascha

Limited number of connections

Hello Team,

I have a weird issue.

Issue: I have one terminal server 2016, only 9 users can connect to my server. I have set the below group policy to 999999.

computer configuration\windows components\administrative templates\remote desktop services\connections\limit number of connections - enabled -999999. and ran gpupdate /force.

But only 9 users can connect to my server. Whenever 10th user tries to connect the server, he receives " The number of Connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator"

I have 20 per device cals installed and 15 Cals are issued and 5 are showing still available. But my other users are not able to connect to the server. I am sure that there is no issue with the licenses. There is something else which is preventing the incoming connections to the server.

Please suggest and help me to resolve my issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Thanks in advance.

Proxy Policies

We have 22 Thin Client servers with domain FL @ 2016. All 22 servers are running 2016 Standard. DC's are Server 2016 Standard. We are also all Windows 10. Patched and running fine.

We are migrating to a new web filter that requires us to Use automatic configuration script. We have tried pushing it out with GPO and registry keys. I have also tried applying the setting locally on the machine.

We can see the Automatically detect settings change. It shows it has applied with gpresult /r but the address never shows up in the address bar. I can manually add it to an account but we have over 1k users in different OU's and this will not work.

No events in the event log and the WinHTTP Web proxy Auto service is running.

I created a separate OU just for this test and it is applied to our user.

This has our Filter engineer baffled and I have been trying for days.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Both IE and Chrome Crashing/Closing

Hello all, I have a weird issue that's got me banging my head against the wall. So thought I would put it out there.  We have a VM running Server 2012 R2 that people RDP into and use IE and Chrome on.  Sporadically both IE and Chrome will just close by themselves automatically with no warning and no message.

I have tried going into the antimalware on that server and putting in all appropriate exceptions.  I have tried doing Windows updates. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome.  I have even tried an sfc /scannow.   Everything I can think of even if it doesn't seem related.

The only common denominator is the URL's involved when it happens.  There are a handful of URL's they are visiting which connect to internal dev systems/portals.  The issue does not occur on their local computers when visiting these URL's though, it only happens on the VM.  So while the URL's are what's in common they are not causing the issue outside of that VM.

This issue just has me stumped both because it is intermittent and because it is happening on multiple browsers.  If anyone has ever run into anything related please let me know.

Remote Desktop Timeout

Hello,

I'm facing an issue with one of my Remote Desktop machines. I have 2 running in my environment in which I thought were identically configured. I have noticed that with one server if a user is idle for 10 minutes the session will lock and present and screen saver. ( expected behavior). On my other machine, it takes a few hours of idle time before it presents the user with a locked screen. I logged into both machines and let them sit to simulate idle time. I then logged into another machine and ran quser /server:<g class="gr_ gr_76 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="76" id="76">servername</g>. I noticed that the timer for the working server started to calculate the idle time while the other did not. Has anyone experienced this behavior before?

Things I have tried.

  • Reboot (a time tested troubleshooting step)
  • Patching
  • SFC /<g class="gr_ gr_47 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" data-gr-id="47" id="47">scannow</g>.
  • Verify group policy settings
  • Compared local registry settings with the working RDS server.
  • I'm running Server 2016 Datacenter.

How to publish same RemoteApp from same RDSH with gateway and without

$

Hi!

I have one Win 2016 server that is RD Web access, RD Gateway and Broker server. I'll have multiple Win 2016 RDSH servers hosting apps. How can I publish one application from one RDSH twice, once with a gateway for roaming users and another without gateway, for internal users?
I know I can publish RemoteApp with one config, download RDP file, edit it and manually distribute it. With the number of users, the manual method is not feasible.
I also know I can set Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses. This won't work due to different subnets.

Did I understand correctly, my whole deployment will be a subject to the same deployment settings? If I want to publish RemoteApp with a gateway from one RDSH and another RemoteApp without a gateway from another RDSH, I can't? Doesn't look like I can set RD Gateway settings per collection.

Thank you

Can copy/paste text but not file via Remote Desktop Gateway; problem only on Windows 10

Remote Desktop Gateway running on Server 2008 R2. For starters, I already acknowledge that we are due for hardware upgrade to a later server OS, but that would mean the cost of many Terminal Server licenses just so we can continue to get through the Remote Desktop Gateway to workstations inside the LAN. So the answer, unless someone can point out to me specific known issues, should not be just "upgrade to a modern OS".

I log on to a Windows 10 workstation (on the LAN & on the domain) from my remote/home through my 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway located at the office. I can copy & paste file content but not files. That is, I can highlight & copy text from inside a file on the office computer and paste that into a text editor on my computer, and vice versa. But I cannot copy & paste a file.

On the other hand, I can log onto a Windows 7 computer via RD Gateway on the same network, and there, I can copy and paste files through the remote connection. But yet again, I can log onto the Windows 10 computer directly while connected to the office VPN and copy/paste files just fine.

So the problem of being able to copy/paste text but not copy/paste files is specific to connections 1) to Windows 10 hosts but 2) only when connected through the Remote Desktop Gateway.

What is it in Windows 10 and/or the Remote Desktop Gateway 2008 that will allow me to copy text & files from Windows 7 Host but only text--not files--from Windows 10 host?

[VDI] Cannot open session

Hello, I am a student who enjoys Windows Server very much. I would like to set up a VDI infrastructure at home for testing purposes. Here is a summary of my infra:

- Service Broker + Gateway = VM (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

- Virtualization host = Dell PowerEdge R620 physical server (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

- DC = Dell Precision T3610 physical server (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

My current problem is as follows: when I log in to the "Remote Desktop Access via the Web", I see my collection of personal desktops that I have created. But, as soon as I download the.rdp file, I enter my credentials, and I find that the RDP window allowing me to access what I assume is the VM opens for a microsecond, then closes without any error or message.

I also noticed that I sometimes connected to the Service Broker, which is problematic.

Do you have a solution?

Thank you in advance! :)

RDS - User profile service failing login rather than creating temporary profile

$

I have a session host group that uses user profile disks.  When I try to login a second time into the group with a user account, I expect that the user should get logged in with a temporary profile due to the other session locking the UPD.  Instead, the user profile service is failing the login due to the inaccessible profile.  On my previous domain, this wasn't an issue.

I checked and verified the obvious GPO setting, "Do not log users on with a temporary profile" was NOT enabled.  I'm not sure what else could prevent the temporary profile from being created.

RDS 2012 R2 / Black Screen

Hi,

I have set up a brand new 2012R2 RDS farm but I have a strange behavior that I am unable to fix :

"Idle session limit" and "End a disconnected session" are set by GPO  ( 1 hour, each)

But each time a user reach one of this limit, this cause an issue on the terminal server service :

 - svchost process ( attached to terminal service) becomes unresponsive

- no more users are able to login  ( login process goes fine, no error message; but users get a black screen... CTRL+ALT+DEL works and permits to launch some commands ( calc, notepad...)

- connected users can't close their session : they get stuck at " waiting for user profile service"

Any idea of what is happening ?

Thank you.

RemoteApp logon takes 60 sec more than standard Remote Desktop logon

$

Hi everybody,

I have stand-alone Windows Server 2012 configured as DC (for further scalability) with appropriate domain and valid SSL Certificate. The machine is VIRTUAL.

Therefore, it's the same machine for every role (RD Gateway, RD Licensing etc).

Logging on as remote desktop user takes a few seconds and is quite OK.

Logging on of the same user(s) as a remote app always adds 60 secs of extra time.

I talk about the time after password prompt pops up, which happens almost immediately.

The following minute after confirming the password the logon dialog presents the message

"configuring remote desktop".

Those 60 seconds are well documented in the Event Log and the sequence is always the same.

It looks like two consecutive time-outs of 30 seconds each.

Below is an example of events sequence:

I have numbered the events for ease of reference.

As can be seen from event #7  and #14 the user disconnects twice after 30 sec timeout.

From some research it seems like a possible problem may be in the VM settings, which is not in my control so if it is the case I would have to know what exactly to ask from the hosting service.

Any idea/solution will be greatly appreciated!
