Trying to connect to RDS - Sometimes takes 3 attempts for the connection to establish

$

I have RDS 2012 set up ( only 1 server configuration ) and when I and my clients attempt to connect to RDS using the remote desktop feed, sometimes it works on the first try and sometimes it works on the 3rd connection attempt.

When it doesn't work, I get the error :

"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote PC for one of these reasons:

1)Your user account is not authorized to access the RD Gateway.

2)Your PC is not authorized to access the RD Gateway.

This error just seems like a generic error because I am authorized and it does work sometimes.

Any idea why this is happening? Let me know if I need to provide more info.

Thank you!

Patrick.

Also, might not be related but I'm seeing this sometimes in the event viewer,

Hi All,

Can you please let me know if there is a way to convert from RDP connections to RDCMan v 2.7 connections and add to RDCMan connections. Were able to add servers using the text file (with Server name and IP addresses)...after the when we tried to add the server group...got error "RDCMan doesnt allow mixing of servers and groups. In order to add a group to this file you must first remove the servers"

Is there a way we can automate the process of adding those server groups and servers at the same time...and also to add those servers without removing those servers. Pls let me know...

Printing Preferences on Redirected Printers. Launched RemoteApp Server 2012

Hello All,

I've got a weird issue I was hoping somebody could help me out with. I've setup a RDS environment with server 2012 and have a launched remoteapp for our users. I am having their printer redirected during the session. We have a couple of users that have to print from tray 3 on our Xerox. They can easily select all the settings they need but when printing it will not keep those settings and always print from tray 1 (default). What I'm finding is that if these users have that Xerox as their default printer on their local machine, while in the remoteapp session any printing preference they make wont stick when printing. Now on their local PC if I change their default printer to something else and they get back into the launched remoteapp and select their printing preferences it keeps the preferences just fine for the print job. All users are using the latest rdc 6.3.9600 and i'm not using the easy print driver from RDS settings.

Thanks!

Is it possible to store RDS User Profile Disks on a NAS?

Hi,

I want to store my RDS 2012 R2 User Profile Disks share on a high-performance NAS appliance, not on a Windows Server.

When I attempt to create the share either through the UI or PowerShell it tells me:

Could not create the template VHD. Error Message: The network location \\fs8600nas\RDS_VDI_Profiles is not available..

It works fine when I point to a Windows Server instead of the NAS, so I assume it is attempting to talk to management services on the Windows Server in order to generate the template VHD. Is there a way around this?

I have tried pre-populating the template VHD to no avail.

Does anyone know if it is possible to manually setup the share, or otherwise get it work on a NAS?

Thanks,
Simon.

2012 R2 RDS Environment with a 2008 R2 CA?

Hello,

I am trying to get a 2012 R2 RDS environment up and running.  A lot of the instructions I found describe having a 2012 certificate authority in the environment as well but all I have is a 2008 R2.  I followed the instructions that I found on a few websites like this one this one and this one but using my 2008 R2 CA so I know some of the options were wrong.  When I went back to my first connection broker and tried to obtain a cert, I got the message "the request certificate template is not support by this CA."  Do I need to have a 2012 CA?  Or is there something that I am missing to get off the ground with a 2008 R2 CA?

Thank you in advance.

Remote Desktop Connection Broker and User Profile Disk not working good.

Hi;

I am setting up a new Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Connection Broker with two Session Hosts and using DNS Round Robin and User Profile Disk in my configuration.  However; the user is always getting the temporary user profile even though I saw the user profile created on User profile disk, I enter the UNC path of user profile disk in my Collection, such as \\fileserver01\sharedisk.

The .bak temp user profile registry key always shows in the session host server registry.  Also, if I use my laptop's remote desktop connection client access to the session host 1 (192.168.1.101), it will redirect me to the session host 2 which is (192.168.1.102). In DNS server, I have configured the round robin pointing to my Collection Name "vdesktop" which is 192.168.1.100.

My user is using Thin Client, what is the proper configuration for Remote Desktop Connection Broker to fix the temporary user profile issue?

Remote app - hide remote disks

Hi, we are trying remote apps on Windows Server 2012 R2 and they work well. One thing we can't accomplish: if we publish an application like Excel or Word that can explore the filesystem (through "open" or "save" but also in other parts of the application) we don't want the user to save files in the remote server and, in general, users should not interact in any way with the app server, and obviously with other servers reachable from the app server. I'd like to know if hiding disks and network links from the app server will be enough. Our final goal will be publishing corporate applications in an unsafe network (f.e. connected to internet), that were previously deployed in an intranet and secure network. Thank you

Slow outlook 2013 using large office 365 mailbox in terminal server environment - Windows search edb file size

$

Hi all, i am asking a question because we have this issue on multiple servers so far:

Customers with their own local terminal servers (15 users, RDP to a server session) that have office 365 mailboxes are having issues with the windows search EDB file where it becomes HUGE (80+gbs).

Reason for this is because all these users have large ost files in which they share the same shared mailboxes (site specific for example) and there goes something wrong with the windows search index database file.

Temporarly we solve this by deleting and rebuilding the search index but in mere weeks the database edb file itself is back consuming a lot of space.

We CAN NOT AFFORD to work in ONLINE mode of outlook: the whole experience for end user is horrible. the outlook clients just react real slow because you're constantly working in mailboxes of sizes larger than 20gbs combined. So we managed to cache it for one month, this is plenty for our customer. With result that the OST files are easily using up this space locally per month.

is there any permanent fix to tihs, how can we make our outlook mailboxes work fine on this terminal server without caching? the experience is horrible if we don't cache.

edit: we tried a lot of stuff, archiving, hardware accelerations, ...

2012 R2 RDS and DNS

$

I'm trying to verify if DNS is configured properly.

I have a customer with two 2012 R2 servers with RDS installed. Server1 has all roles but gateway. Server 2 has all roles but licensing. A public certificate is in place for remote.domain.com.

Public DNS points remote.domain.com to IP 74.xx.xx.xx. Shouldn't the firewall translate that public IP to the private IP of Server2 which is the gateway?

Private DNS and an A record for remote which points to Server1, not the gateway which is Server2.

Server2, the gateway, has the Resource Authorization policy set with a group that includes Server1's private IP, NetBIOS name, FQDN, and remote.domain.com.

In the RD client I have the Access Anywhere configured as remote.domain.com. On the General tab I have the name as Server1 and I can connect to it. If I put remote.domain.com on the General tab my connection attempt is rejected. I thought I would be able to connect to either computer name as the gateway has that in the RAP.

Any ideas if private DNS is configured incorrectly and if so, how it should be configured? Also why can't I connect to Server1 by using remote.domain.com as the computer name instead of Server1 in my RD client?

Hi,

I have windows server 2012 standard. I configured RemoteApp successfully and I can run it on clients. Problem is that All local resources working, but COM ports.

I am starting to think it is not possible run RemoteApp with forwarded COMs.

When I connect to Remote Desktop - there is no problem with any Local resources even COM port forwarding working perfect.

Any suggest?

Terminal Servcies Lag in one application in a field type of notes.

$

One of my engineers has been working with a Terminal Services Lag issue for one of our top clients and we are not getting anywhere on resolving the issue.  It appears to be application specific, but only on Wyse thin clients.

It appears to be ISP neutral.  It only occurs with the Wyse terminals (RDP 5), not with the Windows systems using RDP 6.

It is specific to the clients application they are using.  It is web based.  And it appears to show up in several of the notes fields within the application.

If you open Word, word works fine.

Here is the description I got from my engineer

The problem is very odd and seems Wyse specific.  For those who don't know the whole story, the thin client does not show any typing lag except for when in a specific area of the Therap web site.  All other apps and locations, including typing in the IE address bar or google or whatever, are fine.  Barton does not see the lag when using a Windows PC to RDP to the server, only when using the Thin Client and only in that one spot within Therap.

So it's going to be difficult to get any answers from vendor specific support, but if you were going to call someone, I'd call Wyse since it is quite obviously not a Microsoft issue.

He is about to call Wyse.  B

Have any of your techs seen this type of behavior?

Does changing group policy require a reboot on RDS server?

$

We have a group policy working on our 2008 RDS Server. It just has a few settings right now, like loopback (replace), removed control panel & Run command. We rebooted and these settings took affect.

So now we want to tightened it down some more. We tried removing the "all programs", "computer" & "network" icon from the start menu and a few other things. From a command prompt, we ran gpupdate /force on the RDS and the Windows 2012 Server where the GPO is edited. THen we logged back into the RDS and those items were not removed.

Do we have to reboot the RDS everytime we make a change to the GP?  Or are we not running the proper command in the proper place to immediately force the policy?

Remote Desktop Licensing on Windows 2012

$

Hi All,

I have a remote desktop server on Windows 2012 that I have previously licensed. Now, it is complaining about needing to license it in order to continue services.

When I go to the RD license manager, it shows my server listed as the RD license server with 5 total per-user remote desktop licenses for Windows 2012.

However when I go to the RD Licensing Diagnoser it says the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured. It also says The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.

I am confused as I have already installed the license CALs and they were accepted by the activation wizard. Please advise on what I can do to prevent a shutdown of the remote desktop server.

Thanks,

Force "I am using a private computer..." option to be ticked

Hello.

I have built a Remote Desktop Services environment on Windows 2012 R2 servers.  It all works perfectly but I'd like to force the "I am using a private computer..." option to be checked when people open the "Connect to a remote PC" page (/en-us/Desktops.aspx).  I have read various blogs and articles, many suggestion the same or similar approaches, but for me the option is never checked by default.  I have:

1. Changed document.getElementById("rdoPblc").checked tofalse in webscripts-domain.js

2. Set public bool bPrivateMode to true in Desktops.aspx

Is there anything else I need to do?  Am I missing something simple?  I have tried running IISRESET and also restarting the server hosting the Web Access role.  The option is always ticked on the Default.aspx page (RemoteApp) but never on the Desktops.aspx page.

Thanks in advance.
