Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Publish RDS through WAP/ADFS 4.0 in Windows Server 2016 with SSO?

Hi!

Is it possible to enable SSO with Remote Desktop Services through WAP/ADFS 4.0 with Windows Server 2016? According to earlier forum posts this would possible be included in Windows Server 2016.

Ive configured my setup according to the following guide for pre-authentication with ADFS and published through a WAP.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/identity/web-application-proxy/publishing-applications-with-sharepoint%2c-exchange-and-rdg

The problem with this setup for me is that the users are required to login, once again, when the user is redirected to RDWeb. E.g. the TSWAuthClientSideCookie isnt created without the javascript after the second login in the RDWeb.

The goal is that users only should have to login at the ADFS signin page for SSO. How should I configure the WAP/ADFS/RDS?

Outlook 2013 - Trust center - Win SVR 2012 R2 Standard

HI,

we have a virtualized environment with AD and TERM server. Term server is running Win 2012 R2 Standard and users are RD to it. It has Outlook 2013 installed. Because Win server does not have Security Center that detects antivirus state (Sophos), it is causing Outlook Trust Center coming up with "Antivirus status: Unavailable". We're using Accounting app that uses Outlook to send emails. However, every email asks for confirmation. I need to disable this security check - only one user or everyone.

I checked other topics , but i don't have the registry record (even the office group). Thank you

Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2012 R2 STD Single Server (WORKGROUP)

Hello,

I've been able so setup a Windows Server 2012 R2 with RDS on a single server on a workgroup with Per User CALs.

My question is, is this supported by Microsoft? Does it infringe any licensing?

Is there a guideline for RDS stating that on Windows Server 2012 R2 one needs an  Active Directory Setup, and the RDS roles cannot be installed on the Domain Controller, which means that at least for setting up a RDS Infra-structure I need at least 2 Servers?

From all the setup up guides for RDS on windows 2012, is always assumed that the servers are joined to a domain, an all the roles could be installed on the servers except the licensing role that typically is the DC.

Whats the difference between a Published RemoteApp and an unpublished RemoteApp?

$

I'm using Server 2012 R2 and I've noticed the option under "Tasks" to "Publish RemoteApp Program" and "Unpublish RemoteApp Programs".  What are the differences?

Also how do I allow a published RemoteApp to be accessible to a desktop PC within my network?  Currently everything is accessible through the RD Web Access portal but I would like some apps to be accessible to a workstation on their desktop within my network without having to login into the portal to access the RemoteApp.  I remember there was a way to do this on Server 2008 but I can't remember how.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Ryan

User Profile Disks are excessive size compared to actual contents

Hi -

2012R2 RDS farm, I have configured the deployment to use UPD's for user session profiles. I am finding that the size of the UPD are quickly growing out of control and they are consuming space far in excess of the actual contents of the profile folders.

For example a user profile that has approximately 20mb of files total in all folders results in a UPD size of nearly 1 GB.  I added 20 mb of files to a users profile and his UPD grew by 700 meg.  This space inefficiency is not acceptable.

Is there any reason for this massive increase in UPD size which is so disparite from that actual size of the data added to the profie.

If this can't be controlled better I will have to go back to standard roaming profiles / folder redirection

thanks

Printer coming back 5 times

Hi,

We have a print server with a couple of Network printers. All shared in AD.

I renamed one of the printers, from lets say Printer_1 to Printer_2. All fine, the new printer is visible, users can use it, etc.

One day later Printer_1 came back on one of the RDS servers, but now 5 times!. We have two RDS servers in place.
On the Print server Printer_1 is not there.
In the registry Printer_1 is not there.
In ActiveDirectory i deleted the old printer Printer_1.
On the Print server AND on the RDS server i removed the Inactive TS ports.
Checked all GPO's, but none add the printer.
Checked Logonscript. Old printer has been changed to the new printer Printer_2.
Rebooted the servers (Print and RDS.
Checked Registry on the RDS server. In the connections part the printer is not there.

Of course i can find the old printer in the registry, deep down in it. But also on the second RDS server which doesnt have this issue.

When i delete the printers, they come back after 20 seconds, or when i log off and log on. Sometimes they are back when i logon a second time to the RDS server. So it looke like they are pushed? But from where? And why not on the second RDS server?

Anybody familiar with this happening? I am out of ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Andre

Error applying certificate to RDP-TCP connection in Session host config

$

Hi,

I'm trying to configure my session host connections to be secured using a certifcate issued by a CA.  I've had no problems configuring the gateway or broker server but am getting the following error when I am configuring the session host:

Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration:
There are no certificates installed on this Remote Desktop Session Host server.

If you are not familiar, where to change this setting you must right click the "RDP-TCP" connction, select properties and then press "Select" on the General tab.

The certificate is installed in the personal certificates of the current user.

This is happening on both the servers in my farm and is causing an error message due to the certificate mismatch.  Any assistance or a workaround would be great.

Thanks
Soops

RDP will not connect to Server thru an external gateway server after being connected to local domain

$

We are moving everything to the "Cloud". Currently we log into a local domain. When I try to login to the new server at our contracted host, I can connect to the RDP Gateway server but not login to the specified server behind it with ANY workstation that is on the local domain. I have tried removing the computer from the local domain and still I can't connect. I have removed all Group Policy's after removing it from the local domain and still cannot login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I sure I am logging into the RDP gateway but can't access the server behind it which is named the same as our business because I can login to the web version of the gateway but not the server that I am pointed to.

Now, if I use a Laptop that was never connected to the local domain, but on the same network, same router gateway going out, I can login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I can login from home on a computer that was never on the local domain. I installed Windows 7 with NO updates, not even SP1 and as long as I didn't connect it to the local domain (as in I didn't create an account for it on the local domain server), I was able to login.

My host tells me that it is my problem.

What do I need to do to the computers that are joined to the local domain to get them to connect to the remote server through their RDP gateway?

Server 2012 RDS WinLogon process crashing Event ID 4005 Black Screen

$

We have this issue on many 2012 RDS session hosts. The issue has been seen at different clients with different set ups, some have a simple 1 session host RDS server, some have 4 or 5 session hosts in a load balanced farm with RD gateway, connection brokers, RDWeb, ect. The problem in simplest explanation:

A user will call the help desk saying they cannot access the server. They will get an error when RDP is trying to connect.

We check the session hosts, and will find many errors:

"Event ID 4005 - The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

At that point in time, users who are currently logged in may be able to still work, or their session may lock up (it is not consistent).

Regardless of the current users logged; after the logon process crashes, it continues to crash upon every user attempt to log on. It will happen indefinitely until the server is rebooted. We can not log in, not even via console until the server is rebooted.

Then, everything works fine for some amount of time (not consistent) it may be a couple of days, or it may be weeks, or a month even.

We have had the case open with Microsoft for about two months and they cannot determine what is wrong.

I believe I may have found a possible cause; Webroot Secure Anywhere antivirus. Since we have tried everything from moving from roaming profiles to local profiles, removing all printers, blocking inheritance of GP, fresh server builds with minimal software, ect - it has to be something that is consistent across the board on all servers.

The only thing I can find consistent across the board is the Antivirus; Webroot.

I am curious if anyone else is having this issue? I would like to pin point this to something but it is so intermittent and we cannot force replicate the problem.

Multiple session from one device?

I have a client that uses a thin clients as part of their environment. The issue is that when a session locks and someone comes in behind them and switches users the existing session is signed out and they lose their work. I have looked and no GPO is set to do this. The only thing I can see is they are licensed "Per Device" but I can not find anything that says that should have an effect.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can look.

OS is Server 2008 R2 with HP thin clients.

Clients are low maybe 20 across 15-18 devices.

RDS Connection Broker HA - Testing

$

Hi to all,

we have a customer where we made a RDS 2012 R2 Farm last year.

The Farm is composed by:

CB01 – Connection Broker 01

CB02 – Connection Broker 02

LIC – License Server

RGTW – Remote Gateway with RD Web

SH01-04 – Remote Session Host Servers

SQL - SQL Standard (connection broker database)

Users connect internally to the Farm through RD Web Access installed on RD Gateway and also externally. The fqdn name of RD Web is equal on both sides.

Now we testing RDS Connection Broker HA disabling NIC on one of two CB.

Users can connect (always using RD Web Access) to the Farm only if CB01 is active or both are active. When CB01 is offline and CB02 is online, the connection cannot be made.

Seems that RD Web Access not ensuring connections when CB01 is offline.

Users can still connect using RDC Client pointing farm name, in this case CBs seem working.

Is this normal behavior?

Thank You!

Strange issue with RDS disconnected session

$

Hello,

We are having a strange issue with RDS when a client tries to reconnect to a disconnected session. The issue only happens when the user is going through our SSL VPN (Pulse Secure). This does not happen when the user is internal. If there are no active sessions for the user, they can connect to the farm with no problems, if they close out of the application and the session goes to a disconnect, when they try and reconnect they get the following error message. " Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to the remote computer. The remote computer "Farmname" that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to another remote computer named "Computername". Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify that the computers belong to the sam RD Session Host server farm. You must use the farm name, not the computer name, when you connect to an RD Session Host server farm."

If I manually log off the user, and they try the connection again, it connects with no problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this error?

RDS is running on Server 2012

Thanks,

Gavin

RemoteApp - Slow application performance

$

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 environment, 2 RDWeb/RD Gateway / Connection broker (HA) servers, and currently 2 Session host servers. RDWeb/remoteapp and straight RDP sessions all connect quickly and seamlessly.

I have a legacy financial application that is running for all users.  If users connect directly to the desktop of the server, the application runs very quickly.  If users connect via RDWeb or RemoteApp and Desktop Connections from a Windows PC, the application significantly slows down.  When watching CPU usage, the app never uses more than 4 - 5 % of CPU through RemoteApp, however when connecting directly to the desktop, it will spike briefly (as it should) up to about 20%, and performance is dramatically better.  FairShare CPU is turned off, so I know this is not the issue.  And just to make things more confusing to troubleshoot, when using Microsoft Remote Desktop for MAC, configured for Remote Resources (app publishing), performance is great.  So basically, the issue only happens when using RDWeb or RemoteApp from Windows computers.

pooled VDI collection desktops domain trust relationship issues

$

We have a pooled VDI collection (non-persistent) and we keep getting error messages after logon that the "trust relationshup between this workstation and primary domain failed". Obviously the user can't open a session. So far my researches point at the password change expiration at the master image level, in which after a time, the virtual desktop doesn't match with the AD machine account password. I'm asking if anyone has encountered the same issue. I have found a registry hack to disable the password change policy at the master image level, but I'm wondering if there's a better fix. Our DCs are running on Windows 2008 R2 x64 servers and our RDS infrastructure on Windows 2012. Our pooled VDI collection is made out of a Windows 7 enterprise x64 image.
