Change DPI scaling inside RDP session (2008 R2 / 2012 R2)

$

We have two servers:

  • Server 2012 R2 RDS
  • Server 2008 R2 RDS

Users are constantly reporting being unable to change their screen resolution. After some digging, the reason they're trying to change the resolution is because their text is too small to see. DPI scaling is obviously the answer, but when users go into the setting it is greyed out and cannot be changed.

Now, for Server 2008 R2, I've found this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2726399/en-us

Does this hotfix actually do what I suspect/hope/blindly-pray it will do? Does it re-enable the DPI options if connected via RDP? The article doesn't actually say what it does, just that it will "fix" the issue.

Next, for Server 2012 R2, I've found this link:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/06/13/remote-desktop-services-what-s-new-in-windows-server-2012-release-candidate.aspx

The second last section mentions "Support for Changing DPI in Remote Sessoins." Having logged into this RDS server, this is not the case, the setting is greyed out just like in Server 2008 R2.

  1. What needs to be done to get this working on both platforms? My end result is I want users to log in and be able to go into the preferences, move the DPI slider to their desired text size and fix their problem without resorting to workarounds like decreasing the resolution of their local PC to increase the apparent size of text.
  2. If this isn't possible, is there a way to configure RDS to run at a lower resolution permanently but to stretch to fit any screen resolution? Right now, if you drop the resolution on an RDP session, it just takes up part of the user's screen. In the newest RDP clients, I notice the Smart Sizing option, but it apparently isn't "smart" enough to stretch higher than the base resolution of the session.

I've looked through literally years of forum posts and articles and nothing seems to point at a user-friendly fix such as take the slider, choose your size, done.

CPU/Memory Usage per user

Hi Guys.

We run a 2012 R2 Mutli-Tenancy environment. I was hoping to find a nice way to limit CPU and Memory usage per user, so not to kill an entire server when applications go nuts.

is this possible? Say per user, not to use more than 40% of total cpu, 10% of memory etc? Or actually specifying limits?

RD Gateway Not Accessible From The Internet

I cannot access our RDS Deployment from outside of the LAN. Deployment details as follows:

EDIT: Server 2016

Broker01/Broker02 - Configured in HA both with internal IP (10.x.x.x) - Broker01 also holds the Web Access role

RDGateway01 - Two NICS, on internal IP address (10.x.x.x) and one for DMZ (192.x.x.x)

SessionHost01/02 - Both with internal IP Address (10.x.x.x)

Everything works beautifully on the inside, I can type our URL rds.mydomain.com and there is no problems.  Issues arise when trying to access externally.

The firewall on the DMZ has been set to forward requests on port 443 to the RDSGateway01 but I keep getting "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" or something different depending on the browser. What am I missing?

Thanks

RemoteApp timeout

Guys - i prefer using remoteapp from windows 2012 to control a Windows 10 laptop and screen refreshes, latency is better using this method vs the older remote desktop client (mstsc.exe). However, with remoteapp, if I minimize the window and go back to it after 5 mins, it takes about 5-7 seconds to refresh and bring up the screen. If I go back to the window immediately, it shows up fine

Can not access RD Gateway

I'm done browsing the forums and the Internet. Time to ask for help.

Just set up a new Server 2012 Standard DC in the lab. Have installed RDG on it and am presently using a self-signed certificate. When I attempt to connect remotely I get the "user account not in RDG permissions list", and it is. Here's what I've got. Note that I'm testing this with the domain administrator account, domainname\administrator

Checked that firewall port 443 is opened. I note there are three selections for that port in advanced FW settings. The only one active is the one for HTTPS. That should be all I need.

Checked the groups allowed in both the RD_RAP and the RD_CAP policies, and "Domain Users" is the group present in both.

RD_CAP is set to enable device redirection for all clients.

RD_RAP is set to allow users to connect to any network resource.

The Administrators account is a member of domain users and is set to control access through NPS network policy.

When I connect to https://servername.local I'm not getting any certificate errors, indicating that the workstation, which is not a domain member, has the root certificate property installed. If I log in from /RDWeb it uses port 3398 and doesn't go through the gateway.

If I set up RDP to use the gateway of domainname.local, it connects, prompts me for login information which I enter, Then tells me the administrator account is not listed in the RD Gateway's permission list.

I'm stumped at this point.

EDIT: I just checked the event viewer, and it shows two events. Event 200 is "The user "LAB\Administrator", on client computer "172.20.65.23", met connection authorization policy requirements and was therefore authorized to access the RD Gateway server. The authentication method used was: "NTLM" and connection protocol used: "HTTP"."

This is followed by event 301 which is "The user "LAB\Administrator", on client computer "172.20.65.23", did not meet resource authorization policy requirements and was therefore not authorized to resource "labserver". The following error occurred: "23002".

I've deleted and recreated both policies and still get the same in event viewer. What am I missing?

Windows server 2016 AutoCAD 2017 issues

short introduction, We are using RDP for our CAD drafters to work at home. Our servers are on the cloud (AWS) so pretty much they are on VM. We recently migrated to Windows server 2016 but we have this error on windows server 2016.

The mouse will snag/catch a certain point and keep popping back to that area when the issue is present (Autodesk Application). This makes drafting and other tasks difficult. This temporary solution I've found to work is to click out of the server and click back into it.

Is there a hot fix update for this issue?

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

RDP will not connect to Server thru an external gateway server after being connected to local domain

We are moving everything to the "Cloud". Currently we log into a local domain. When I try to login to the new server at our contracted host, I can connect to the RDP Gateway server but not login to the specified server behind it with ANY workstation that is on the local domain. I have tried removing the computer from the local domain and still I can't connect. I have removed all Group Policy's after removing it from the local domain and still cannot login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I sure I am logging into the RDP gateway but can't access the server behind it which is named the same as our business because I can login to the web version of the gateway but not the server that I am pointed to.

Now, if I use a Laptop that was never connected to the local domain, but on the same network, same router gateway going out, I can login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I can login from home on a computer that was never on the local domain. I installed Windows 7 with NO updates, not even SP1 and as long as I didn't connect it to the local domain (as in I didn't create an account for it on the local domain server), I was able to login.

My host tells me that it is my problem.

What do I need to do to the computers that are joined to the local domain to get them to connect to the remote server through their RDP gateway?

RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

License Server Migration with Coexistence

Hi all,

Could do with a little insight into the above.

We've got an existing 2008 R2 TS installation fully licensed and have built an RDS 2012R2 environment for which session hosts are in grace period.

We have an EA for our TS licensing and want to migrate the licensing to 2012 but still support our 2008 session hosts servers whilst we retire the 2008 over a period of time.

What is the best way to do this without impacting on the 2008 production environment?

Thanks,

Si

Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS with Active Directory on the same server

First of all, I know this topic has been discussed everywhere, but I feel like my case is slightly different from others.

First of all, in our company, we have one physical server running with Windows Server 2012 and Active Directory running on it (with about 20 users). We have some services that client computers need to access through Remote Connection, the regular Remote Desktop Client connection would be totally fine, but as I understand, without the RDS Role we cannot have more than 2 connections simultaneously (+ admin).

The problem is that 1) I know RDS on AD is not recommended and considered a big security risk and 2) I cannot get the service to run properly anyway.

Since I don't need most of the features that RDS comes with anyway, is there a way I can just install one or two roles that it requires, so we can have more connections (I have the RDS CAL license for it).

If it's possible, which roles of RDS are necessary for such type of a setup?

Best regards,

Rauno

I have an existing RDS License server (Win2012) which has a # of RDS Per user CALs.  We just brought an ECL.  I am very confused on how to install this new license to the existing license server.  Am i suppose to go into the RD Licensing Manager, right click the server on the left pane and select "Install Licenses".

Thanks for any help you can provide.

RDS License Server - stand alone RDS host server

$

In my current environment, I have 4 Windows Server 2008 RDS boxes on my domain.  They all point to a 2008 license server for the RDS licenses, also on my domain.

Have a new project that requires two new 2012 RDS servers.   One will be on the domain, one will be a stand alone server (can't be on the domain due to the users that will be accessing it).

Can the non-domain server still use my domain-joined License server?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Slow logon, slow server - Memory leak? RD Server 2008 r2

After being up for some time - anywhere from one to two weeks my two RD VMs get so bad that only rebooting solves the problem. Using Process Explorer I noticed:

Server    Process      CPU      Private Bytes     Working Set
TS3        lsm.exe      26.86   300,192 K          242,392 K
TS2        lsm.exe                   11,264 K            14,560 K

TS2 had been rebooted the evening before I took this snapshot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

How to set up remote desktop licensing mode in windows server 2012

$

Hi,

I've deployed yesterday a windows 2012 server (RTM) and set up the license server for my 10-CAL licenses. That's ok.

But I can not see a way to point my server to see the license server. Every time I log in, I receive a message that the RD services will expire in 119 days.

Using the diagnosis tool it says that licensing mode isn't set up.

Where I can find the tool to set up this licensing mode? In windows server 2008 this question was asked in the setup wizadr.

Thanks a lot!

I am needing to move my Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop High Availability SQL database to another SQL server. I have the database copied to the new SQL server and is attached and online.

Can anyone provide me the Powershell script that I need to run to repoint the server farm to the new database?

Do I need to run the same script on each farm server?

TIA

Reboots pending

Hi, when trying to make changes in our RDS 2012 deployment such as deploying license role or adding a session host to a collection, all servers in the deployment state "The server has reboots pending and needs to be restarted" - I have tried the obvious of restarting and a few posts suggests checking the fileoperations pending registry key but so far I am having no luck clearing this issue

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance
