Windows Server 2012R2 - svchost.exe 60-100% load!

$

We are using RDS collection with two Windows Server 2012R2 session hosts. Both hosts are virtual servers (clean installation) and are used as session hosts (terminals) with 10 to 25 users each. RDS Connection Broker is also virtual machine with Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using Windows 7 Embedded thin clients with MSTSC RDP 8.0.

There is problem with high cpu load on these servers. Sometimes Svchost.exe starts to cause 60-100% load. Our virtual machines have 10 virtual processor cores. Load is caused by LSM (Local Session Manager) Service from DCOM Launcher group. Svchost creates many thread as you can see on picture attached. Sometimes this load disappears after 12-24 hours, sometimes it needs restarting whole server.

We still cannot find cause of this problem, although we managed to reproduce this issue one time by logging two admin accounts to server console and force disconnecting one of these accounts by third admin account connecting to server console by RDP mstsc.exe with -admin parameter.

Our users are very unsatisfied :-(

This is screenshot of Process Explorer - svchost.exe - Threads:

Black Screen on Windows Server 2016 RDS

Running Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Services (session-based desktops).

Multiple session host servers, one DC, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer 7.1. The servers are fully updated to present time as of 7 March 2019.

Every few days a user reports that after logging in to an RDS session he does not see his desktop but sees a black screen. When this happens, I can see that some users on that same RDS server still have their session working normally, but every user logging in after this also gets this black screen.

There are numerous references to this problem on the internet. It is apparently occuring since Server 2012 and has never been fixed.

Some people recommend to restart the Windows Audio service. Does not help in my case, never does when it happens to me. Other recommendations were to remove Firefox browser from the RDS session host servers. I did that two months ago and it seemed to help for one week but then it came back. I have not found any other recommendation - there seems to be simply no solution, except restarting that RDS session host server, which is a major inconvenience, it throws out the other users which still work, it takes 10 minutes or more to restart that server, and it can only be done manually. Most often it has to be force-restarted on top of it, as the server is totally unresponsive, and then some users may loose their user profile. Then I have to delete that user and recreate his user profile. Major trouble.

In the last few months I have rebuilt all RDS session host servers from scratch - total new installation, all updates, totally clean. It STILL happens. I have that system running since 2 years, and it has been a problem all the time.

When I try to log in to the console of the offending RDSH I can sometimes not even log in . Sometimes it does let me log in but I also get a black screen as local admin user (both Server\Administrator and Domain\Administrator). In this case, I can bring  up TaskManager via Ctrl+Alt+End and run a command prompt. I can restart services this way and execute other commands, but anything relating to the UI does not show up. Screen stays black.

Managed once to get the black screen off by restarting ShellExperienceHost service but then this logged out all users somehow and corrupted some profiles.

The only applications installed on the RDSH servers are Chrome browser, Thunderbird email client, Libre-Office.

From what I can find on the internet this problem occurs since the release of Windows Server 2012. This is seven years ago. I do not know if this happens to everyone, but there seems to be no common denominator from what I can find, it seems to happens on all sorts of environments, pointing to a bug within Windows Server itself.

From what it seems it is related to the new UI system implemented with Windows 8 (and Server 2012) because I can find no reference to this occurring with Server 2008. I have not run RDS on Server 2008 myself so I have no first-hand experience.

Is there ANYTHING I can do about this? It does NOT seem related to my setup which is really rock-bottom basic. Many users are reporting this as a dreaded issue they hope one day will be fixed by Microsoft.

Can it be related to the virtualization software? Anything having experienced that issue on bare-bone installs of RDSH servers? Any difference with Hyper-V VMs?

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO GET FIXED? THIS IS A PROBLEM SINCE 2012 - 7 YEARS!

I feel forced to start researching for non-Microsoft solutions for RDS type solutions because I simply cannot tolerate non-functional software. To the users it looks like it is me as admin who is not doing his job!

Windows Server update Shows black screen of death

$

Hi all

This morning I have experienced a black screen of death on both my exchange server and domain controller. these are physical servers.

The Servers go on but after the Windows Logo, it just goes dark, no curser and I cant control-Alt-delete.

My suspicions is that it is a update that came through during the weekend.

What I tried.

I cant restore because It didn't set a restore point

I tried fixing the MBR but since it logs through and shows the windows logo that might mean the MBR is intact

tried all safe mode options but nothing.

I am running out of ideas,

So the Question is how do I remove an update from the server if t doesn't want to log in Windows?

your responses will be much appreciated

Ezekiel Sikaneta

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

RDS 2016 - Disabling TLS v1.0

We have the following RDS 2016 configuration:

Server 1 - RDC Broker
Server 2 - RDSH
Server 3 - RDSH
Server 4 - RD Web Access & RD Gateway (sits in a DMZ)

To comply with PCI standards we would like to disable TLS v1.0 on our internet facing servers (ie: Server 4). If we disable TLS1.0, either manually through regedit or by using IIS Crypto, the shortcut within RD Web Access no longer works.

Has anyone managed to successfully disable TLS1.0 on their RD Web Access/RD Gateway server without breaking it? Any documention or guides on how to achieve this?

RDP Reconnect sending bad password || Windows Event ID 4625: An account failed to log on

Issue: User Logs onto Client Machine remotely, then connects to Corp VPN and does RDP to any Corp machine. In case the VPN disconnects or client machine loses network connectivity momentarily, the RDP session re-establishes the connection.  When it re-establishes a connection, it logs a bad password attempt on the users account.  If this happens too many times, users are experiencing account lockout.

Upon checing the logs, I see that the Terminal Service is sending the bad password.

Can anyone suggest what could be the possible issue?

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

RDS Web access change password not working

Hi,

I have implemented RDS Web Access. Running the web page via localhost, when I try to change the password the reply is:

Your new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of your domain. Try choosing a different new password."

This happens no matter what password I create and try.

This is not  a domain controller, it is just a Windows Server 2016 I am testing this on.

Thanks for any help!

RDS server questions

I am looking at setting up some RDS servers. I will need 2 different ones, but will probably end up building 2 of each. The user groups are totally different so the needs for each box such as programs will need to be different.

Is it a bad idea to run the Session Host servers as VM's as opposed to running that on the physical box?

I am looking at getting a gpu to use remotefx on server 2016 for the VM's. The users are not doing any cad cam work, just basic web browsing with the occasional video to watch. I would prefer to put a GPU in to help keep the cpu usage down. Is a P4000 from Nvidia a good card to use?

If running the session host in a VM is a bad idea am I better off just using the GPU on the physical host and using the Group Policy to force the RDS users to use the gpu for video acceleration?

Thank you

RDS clients not connecting

windows 2012 r2, hyper-v, clients connect via rds website and then launch a rds session (vdi windows 10 vm). It was working, but then a few users reported being unable to connect. Silly me, I figured "apply latest updates and reboot" and now no one can connect. I updated and reboot the RDS and Hyper-V server (RDS is actually a VM running on the same Hyper-V server).

From the RDS server's RemoteDesktopServices-RDPCoreTS log a connection looks like this:

Event ID 131, the server accepted a new TCP connection from client blah blah blah

Event ID 65, Connection RDP-Tcp#0 created

Event ID 141, PerCounter session started with instance ID 0

Event ID 133 the following network characteristics have been detected for tunnel 8;...

Event ID 132, a channel rdplic has been connected between the server and the client using transport tunnel 0

Event ID 132, a channel rdpcmd has been connected between the server and the client using transport tunnel 0

Event ID 98, a TCP connection has been successfully established

Event ID 100, the server has confirmed that the client's multi-transport capability. (really bad English there BTW)

Event ID 130, the server has initiated a multi-transport request to the client, for tunnel 1

Event ID 130, the server has initiated a multi-transport request to the client, for tunnel 3

Event ID 135, the multi-transport connection finished for tunnel 1, its transport type set to TCP, reason code 3 (no UDP packets received)

Event ID 135, the multi-transport connection finished for tunnel 3, its transport type set to TCP, reason code 3 (no UDP packets received)

Event ID 103, the disconnect reason is 1033

Event ID 102, the server has terminated main RDP connection with the client

I've found articles about RemoteFX and disabling it via GPO and registry values - which I tried to no avail.

HELP!!! please!

Hide integrated Apps from start menu list

Hello everybody,

I'm planning to install a new RDS farm with Server 2019. I'm customizing everything I need, but got stuck at the start menu.
How can I hide/remove the integrated Apps from start menu like Settings, Search and Windows-Security.
I'm ok with Settings and Search, but Windows-Security must be hidden before I can deploy this new farm.

Thanks for your help.

RDWeb shortcut not working

$

We recently setup a Windows 2016 RDS collection. This consists of the following servers:

 - Server 1 (RDS Broker, RDS Licensing)
 - Server 2 (RDSH)
 - Server 3 (RDSH)
 - Server 4 (RDS Web Access & RDS Gateway) (server 4 is located in our dmz)

We have an external dns record "apps.somedomain.co.uk" which points to server 4.
We have an internal dns record "rds.somedomain.local" which points to server 1.

We can successfully browse and log into https://apps.somedomain.co.uk\rdweb, however, when we attempt to connect to the RDSH farm, using the RDP shortcut within the RDWeb portal, it attempts to log us directly onto the gateway/web access server (server 4) rather than query the broker and direct the session onto one of the RDSH servers!

Internally, if we RDP to rds.somedomain.local we are successfully redirected to one of the RDSH servers and we can see user session are being load balanced.

We have deleted and recreated the rds collection but we get the same issue. Below is a screen shot of what we see when using the RDP shortcut within the RDWeb portal. It appears both the 'remote computer' and the 'gateway' are pointing to the same dns record which resolves to the gateway/web access servers. How can we update the collection settings so the RDP shortcut has the correct dns address for both remote computer (ie: rds.somedomain.local) and gateway server (apps.somedomain.co.uk)?

Handle Remote Desktop Idle timeout

$

Hi,

We want to use RDP for connecting to remote machine, execute Desktop Application Automation there. The challenge that we face is that on the customer end there are restrictions on idle timeout in RDP session. Once we start executing the automated desktop application and if execution takes longer that than the idle timeout to execute, the remote desktop session ends, and the Desktop Automation fails. Is there a way to handle this?

1. I have tried TSCON, but TSCON unlocks the console session, so it may not be acceptable to customers.

2. I have also tried Java's Robot classes to do some mouse action(https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52874/how-do-you-keep-the-machine-awake) This also works with limited scope. In case the RDP session loses focus, it does not work.

Is it possible to keep the RDP session from disconnecting on Idle Timeout?

Thanks in Advance.

Best,

Sumit

"The remote desktop session host server is in per device licensing mode and no redirector mode" error

Hi,

I got an error in RDP server 2008

The remote desktop session host server is in per device licensing mode and no redirector mode,
but the license server does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes
Product Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing mode:
Per Device License type: RDS CALs or VDI.

In the license manager section, the green checkbox is checked but the error still exists. I reactivated the license but the problem has not been solved. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cut and Paste does not work from Server 2008R2 or 2016 to 2016 servers

I recently deployed a few 2016 servers into my 2008R2 Domain-Ive read all the online descriptions of basically doing this and looking at group policy

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/33801.remote-desktop-troubleshooting-unable-to-copy-paste-files.aspx

Both are set to not configured or disabled-However still greyed out when attempting to cut and paste a fiile in an RDP session.

This works however no issue copying files between 2008R2 servers. Only when attempting to copy and paste either between 2016 servers or 2008r2 to 2016. Help!!!!

When I get 3-5 users logged onto the server the next user that logs on kicks everyone else out of the system.  the only event in the logs I can find is that the remote desktop service crashed.  it does not seem it be an issue when connecting from outside the network.......
