licenses are not getting issued to my session host server

Hello Team,

I have 30 session host servers and I am using non persistent servers where my users will simply login and use it for a day and log off. Whenever they log off the server will get back to its initial state and all the changes made to the servers will be lost.

I have purchased the Per user licenses and configured them. I have installed licensing role on the sever and applied the below group policies to my session host servers.

  • Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing\Specify RD License Servers - I have specified my licensing server.
  • Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing\Specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode - I have specified per user licensing mode.

But the licenses are not getting issued. These servers are still depending on 120 days grace period. In the event viewer it says "  The Remote Desktop Session Host server does not have a Remote Desktop license server specified. To specify a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server, use the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool".

I am wondering that I have already specified the group policies and still it displays the above error.

I tried deleting the grace period registry key as I read in on the forums, since these are non-persistent VM's at the end of the day the registry key will regenerates and starts issuing the free licenses. I am afraid now, what happens after 120 days?

There are no error messages on licensing diagnose? Please advise is this a kind of bug or something else?

Any kind of help is much appreciated

Thanks,

SM

Privacy on a Terminal Server

Hi,

to prevent users from knowing about other users on a terminal server what can I do?

By default users could:

-browse c:\users\*
-use taskmgr.exe
-tasklist
-qwinsta
-netstat
-? perhaps other commands, applications

to gain information about other users on a Terminal Server like Account Name, processes used, Network Connections.

I could prevent access to the obvoius like eventvwr + other administrative tools, c-drive or adjust permissions on qwinsta.exe but with cmd.exe and taskmgr.exe it already is difficult because it limits users e.g. from ending a hanging process.

Ideally it also would require to whitelist every single allowed application and prevent execution of portable software for users.

Are there any recommendations?

thank you

RDS Deployment, Server 2012 R2 and 2016, cannot connect when added as a remote resource on modern app

Hello,

I've been having an issue connecting to new RDS deployments, either Server 2012R2 or 2016, using the modern client (UWA?).

If I connect to the rdweb site via  browser, any browser (Chrome, IE, Edge), I can connect fine w/ the downloaded RDP file, either via the old mstsc client, or the modern client.  If I open the modern client and add my deployment as an RDS resource, it adds file, but when I try to connect, it doesn't do anything.  Monitoring network traffic, it doesn't even try to connect to the rpcproxy.dll,or even send any packets on the wire to my gateway.

Doing some digging, I see the rdp file is saved in my user profile (C:\Users\#####\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.RemoteDesktop_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\RADC\{9AFF1AD1-C68D-FC28-FA01-4BD806FA43E4}-Committed\Resource) without an extension.  If I copy the file from there, give it a .rdp extension, I can also connect with that file via either client.

I also don't appear to be able to add the remote resources, at all, via the IOS RD Client.  I haven't tried Mac or Android yet, waiting to stabilize this config, but perhaps that's a separate issue.  I don't see it trying to logon or connect to webfeed.aspx on the RDSWeb page at all.

These would all be the lastest iterations of the clients, I just started this whole setup about a week ago.  I've tried a standard deployment in 2016, then a quick deployment in 2016, and finally a quick deployment in 2012 R2.  I'm familiar with all the cert requirements, etc, I don't think it is any sort of cert issue.  I will say the 2012 R2 quick deployment seemed to work OK initially, until I added 2016 session hosts to the deployment, but now I can't say for sure.  If needed, I could do another quick deployment to verify.

Any insights would be great.  If we can only use rdweb and have users open RDP files I guess we're OK with that, but not ideal.

Thanks!

Windows 10 - Remote Desktop serves Black Screen

Hi Windows 10,

I am having an issue with Windows 10 - every day.

But last 3-6 months, remote desktop connections fail with a black screen on my network!

Now I have started to feel true hate towards this OS, as this error, now seems to settle as a forever error that will stay?!

Issue is using RDP to other Windows10 device on my network, now serves a black screen after connection has been idle for some time - or it just turns black, just as i log in?!

I am able to remove black screen - only if disconnect, and reconnect. But again. After some time. I get a black screen again?!

As Windows continues with their disapointments towards the proffesionals on Windows10 since release.

This error in question, I really want fixed - to be working as it has always been - since the dark ages . RDP should just work! Every time - all the time.

So anyone - before I look up a lawyer to fight this - Please assist with the right trick to get this fixed......

Awaitng that true fix------ anyone?

Regards, Kato.

2012 r2 RDS Hosts logging users off

I have an issue I have been attempting to diagnose for about a week now. I only posted a few times ever and I am not used to requesting assistance so, please if there is anything I should have obviously mentioned just ask and I will fill you in.

Little background. My primary environment is 100% on VMware with 3 hosts using Dell Compellent storage. I have 2 Virtual servers acting as sessions brokers and gateways, one of these servers is a licensing server and I had 12, session hosts. All servers are 2012r2 and were about a month behind on updates when this started around March 6th.  I shut down my VMs on the 10th when adding a storage expansion to the environment. After the system came back up this issue hit hard starting right on the 11th.

I am having an issue with the 2012 R2 Session hosts in my environment logging users out and I am not sure why. I have a primary RDS collection and a single server we use for various IT functions acting as its own license server, Session broker and host. Both the primary RDS collection and this IT server both log out users at what appears to be random. When I look in the logs of the Hosts, they show the logoffs as normal events with the reason being 12. I have confirmed the sessions timeouts are set appropriately both in GPO and in the session settings of the collection. These log outs happen if a user connects through the session broker or directly to the server via a console connection as an administrator. I have removed all nonessential GPOs from the servers. The only GPO settings being sent to the servers are a registry key for a database connection, 2 simple scripts to audit and add log on and logoff times to a notepad, loopback set to replace, and a policy adding websites to the trusted sites and allowed pop-ups. I have confirmed these are the only settings for both the user and computer GPO using gpresult.

This log off event happens for users and administrators. while testing I will log my account into each server and monitor so I can view logs when I get the long off the event. The logs as far as I can tell look the same as if I were to hit the log off button in the start menu. Sometimes I will get logged off of just one server, or sometimes 2 or 3 at the same time(confirmed by logs down to the second) which tells me something is causing this event.

Since the issue has started I have removed the expansion cabinet, updated all sessions hosts to current windows updates and added two more hosts for a total of 14. I have removed all nonessential GPOs, double checked and set session timeouts in both the collection session settings and GPO, Attempted to set keep alive in RDS GPO settings to 1. I have around 15-20 users using 1 remote app on these hosts during daytime business hours.

My hope is to get some assistance with diagnosing a possible issue with the server itself, or helping figure out within logs what may be initiating the log of events.

I have not posted any logs because with everything I have looked through this week, I am not sure what is relevant to a trained eye. I can answer any questions and produce logs to anyone who may be able to assist with this issue.

Using a wildcard cert for remote desktop servers

$

Hello everyone!

Please note: All the servers in this case are WS2008r2 unless otherwise stated.

I've got a client whose active directory domain is let's say "int.domain.com". However the only 3rd party ssl cert I have to work with is a wildcard certificate for "*domain.com".

When users connect to the remote desktop service, ie they connect via rds.domain.com - they initially get the wildcard certificate, but when they are then directed to the individual remote desktop servers, they get an error because they then receive the self signed cert for the servers - rds1.int.domain.com and rds2.int.domain.com.

I've added the hostnames for rds1 and rds2 to the domain.com DNS on my domain controller, so that rds1.domain.com points to the IP address of rds1.int.domain.com etc.

I need a way of getting the rds service to use the rds1.domain.com and rds2.domain.com dns names so I can authenticate them using the wildcard cert.

Is this possible!?

Task manager user control prompting for password

Hello,

I got a problem concerning Windows Server 2019 RDC. No matter how we configure the GPO, we can't connect to users over the Task Manager without the password prompt. Got any ideas how to work around that? Both I and my colleague are Administrators on the network and got all permissions.

I know you can shadow people over the RDC manger tool, but the user we're trying to have assist with insists to doing it over task manager...

2012 Server RDSWEB - Certificate mismatch error

I've seen this error discussed, but need little more detail. I want to understand how to create RDS Farms with correct initial settings to avoid this.

When clicking on a Remote Desktop Icon for a remote collection (Sage_Sales). I enter my credentials and see this dialog.

Then I see this warning about the certificate mismatch.

Then I see this error if I click [Yes]

Can someone explain why each dialog/error is displayed?

I want to be able to look back at this thread, and correct my configurations.

RemoteApp hangs, can't log off

Hello. First time posting here, so please bear with me and my broken English.

I'm working as IT guy in small company that uses program called Symfonia for invoices, wares etc. It is installed on virtual machine with Windows Server 2012 R2, to which people connect via RemoteApp shortcuts with redirecting of their local printers.

My problem started 3 weeks ago, when one of rdp sessions hanged while probably printing bill from Posnet Thermal connected via USB and redirected using COM port. I couldn't (using local administrator account on server) log that user out or kill their instance of Symfonia.exe (access denied)(wait chain empty in task manager). I installed ProcessExplorer to change permissions to kill hanged process, but something weird happened. I couldn't use ProcessExplorer using "run as administrator", it just doesn't show up, but process creates itself in Task Manager. It worked normally (not as admin), but i couldn't change permissions of other processes.

After one process hanged, anyone who tried to print something would experience same thing, even while using not redirected printer.

And the best part is, sometimes when this occurs, I can't log out myself from local admin user (sits at logging off).

Only thing that helps in this situation is restarting server itself, which sometimes doesn't "end", just hangs in "turning off" state. Have to forcefully shut it down in that case.

While everything runs normally (more or less for about a day after restart) I can normally run ProcessExplorer as administrator.

Hi,

I would want to install RDS Licences User CALs for a windows server 2012 r2.

Is it a must to have Active Directory to effect this or I can  install without the need for the AD?

Much appreciate the assistance/advise.

Hi All,

Right now, here is my current situation. Whereby 1 server has 2 same CAL license with 10 Users. Supposedly we allow 10 users to rdp, but it turns out the RDP session shows 20 Users connected.

Any idea, why is it capable of more then 10 Users with a same CAL License?

Virtual IP issues with server 2019.

We've attempted to set up up Virtual IP for our RDSH in Windows Server 2019 for a tricky application that requires it (NetDocuments NDClick). However, it appears that it doesn't work. Has this feature been deprecated in Windows Server 2019?

We did the exact same setup on our 2016-servers, and there it works perfectly fine.

Any ideas, or some updated documentation on the subject available?

RDS 2016 - Disabling TLS v1.0

$

We have the following RDS 2016 configuration:

Server 1 - RDC Broker
Server 2 - RDSH
Server 3 - RDSH
Server 4 - RD Web Access & RD Gateway (sits in a DMZ)

To comply with PCI standards we would like to disable TLS v1.0 on our internet facing servers (ie: Server 4). If we disable TLS1.0, either manually through regedit or by using IIS Crypto, the shortcut within RD Web Access no longer works.

Has anyone managed to successfully disable TLS1.0 on their RD Web Access/RD Gateway server without breaking it? Any documention or guides on how to achieve this?

Windows Server update Shows black screen of death

Hi all

This morning I have experienced a black screen of death on both my exchange server and domain controller. these are physical servers.

The Servers go on but after the Windows Logo, it just goes dark, no curser and I cant control-Alt-delete.

My suspicions is that it is a update that came through during the weekend.

What I tried.

I cant restore because It didn't set a restore point

I tried fixing the MBR but since it logs through and shows the windows logo that might mean the MBR is intact

tried all safe mode options but nothing.

I am running out of ideas,

So the Question is how do I remove an update from the server if t doesn't want to log in Windows?

your responses will be much appreciated

Regarding RDS CAL / User CAL for Windows Server

$

We have a desktop based accounting application installed on Windows server. We want our branch users to access the server and use the application. We have around 40 people who are going to access the server via remote desktop from their windows based pc/laptops. As per my understanding, we will need RDP/RDS CAL licenses on server.

What else do we need? Do we need User CALs or just RDS CALs ?

Thanks in advance.
