DDA and group policy with a GPU

$

I have setup a Windows RDS box on Server 2016 that runs in a VM. I've got The DDA (PCIe device passthrough) setup on a Nvidia P2000 gpu.

To make the RDS server use the gpu instead of the CPU for video which group policies should I modify?

Thank you

Adding RD services to existing environment

I'm looking an email hosting environment that wants to expand to also offer RDS to the existing email customers.  There is an existing AD environment already.  Each customer already has their own UPN domain that distinguishes them from each other customer. Theoretically, each customer would have their own segmented subnet that would contain an RD Session Host and file/application server that is managed by a central set of redundant RD Gateway and Connection Broker servers.  Group policies for things like folder redirection and computer lock down policies would have to work.  Of course no access from the individual customer subnets directly to the existing AD domain servers with all the user accounts would be wanted.  I can not decide if making a subdomain of the existing user accounts domain and joining customer servers to the subdomain or setting up a resource and authentication forest set up would be best.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

RD Web Access Apps only displaying after hitting Show Details.

Hello,

We currently have a setup where we have a server with the web access and RD gateway roles installed.  They point back to a broker that has multiple applications defined that users can use through a browser (using the web access URL.)  The issue we are having is that the user will click the application, it will establish a connection, but hang until you click show details.  Once that has happened it will show the domain page and load the application.  Does anyone know how to make the application automatically display instead of having to click show details?

Thanks

Select Icons To Appear In Taskbar Doesn't Stay Selected Between Sessions - Possible UPD Issue

Every time I log into RDS, I have to re-"Select which icons appear on the taskbar" to have my notification shown in the system tray.  Every time.  I have UPD and Redirected Folders.  In User Profile Disks setup within the RDS setup, I chose "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk".  Yet, it's not saving my selection of icons that I want displayed within my system tray upon logging off.  What do I need to do so that users don't have to keep re-selecting every time they log into RDS?  It seems to defeats the purpose of using UPD, i.e., is unable to roam properly.  Thank you!  -John Babbitt-

Hello support,

I have Windows 2012 R2 standard server as a RDS clients on it.  it runs an applications on it called ACT! and 7 users login to it to access the Act! program and their individual email outlook. There are three users that have Apple devices that use RDP client for Mac that access the server.  I want to close port 3389 and use Remote Web Access (via a ssl certificate) and using essential experience to access the server instead of RDP.  But when I go to browser (Safari) and put in the remote link.  https://remote.domain.com/remote,     I am able to log in and the remote client is downloaded and when I click on it, it wants to open it with an app and it cannot find and goes to App Store but all the programs there are greyed out or not available.

The same process for iPad and iPhone. How can safely access the server?  I appreciate your help.

Office 365 Activation prompts on Server 2016 RDS Host

Platform

  • Server 2016 Session Host
  • Office 365 Pro Plus 2016

Hello

We successfully installed Office 2016 Prop Plus on to the session host some months ago. We have a random problem that has occurred twice now, where a user is prompted toactivate the product when they open a document first thing in the morning. The user can successfully activate the product by signing in. But if they close all products, they are promoted to  activate again when opening any of the products. The only way I could fix this for the first user a few months ago was to delete the profile  including the UPD.  The issue has begun again for anther user, and I'm trying to find a solution. There are other people having this issue out there in tech land, but with no firm answers that I can find.

Many Thanks

Is it possible to change default rdp file for a specific published app on Remote Desktop Server 2016

Hey everyone,

I have a Remote Desktop 2016 Farm running published apps

The Windows 10 Clients inherit the dpi settings from the local computer to the published app that they execute, but that function does not work with Windows 7.

I know it is possible to change the default dpi and resolution settings from “rdweb\pages\Application Settings” for all published applications.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change screen or dpi resolution for a single published app?

Best regards
Carsten

Problem with mapping redirected client printers to server drivers at RDS Server 2016

$

Hi,

I've problems with slow printing in our new RDS 2016 environment. The problem is related to the Easy Print driver which works but is very slow in most cases. I have set the policies to not use Easy Print driver first, so if a matching driver is found it works well. But since there are numerous of printers/drivers being used in our company I would like to avoid installing every single driver needed. In our old Citrix environment we map client printers with server drivers via a Citrix policy. But I have not been able to find anything like that for RDS 2016 except using a NTPrintSubs.inf file in C:\Windows\System32\TSPDRW\ folder. But I do not get that to work and I'm not sure is it is because I have configured it the wrong way or if it is not supported anymore. I have registered the registry REG_SZ keys PrinterMappingINFName (C:\Windows\System32\TSPDRW\NTPrintSubs.inf) and PrinterMappingINFSection (Printers) in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd. And I have entered information in the file like:

[Printers]

"HP LaserJet 4200 PS" = "HP LaserJet 4200 PS Class Driver"

Is this solution still supported and is there any detailed guide somewhere regarding exactly which steps is needed? Or is there any other way of resolve this issue?

Most grateful for any help

Windows Server 2016 RDSH Intermittent BSOD (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE)

$

Hi,

Not sure if this should be asked here or not. If I have submitted in error, please let me know and I will redirect my query elsewhere.

We have an RDS platform (single GW/CB/Lic server - Windows Server 2016, 3 RDSH servers - also Windows Server 2016). The platform is accessed using HP Thin Clients via the Gateway's RDWeb feed. The clients connect fine and all applications and hardware devices appear to work correctly.

However, intermittently (doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason that I can ascertain) one of the servers (it can be any of the three) will BSOD with a bugcheck of 0x0000009f (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE). The server automatically reboots after a period of time and then works normally. Sometimes the BSOD happens only once, but then other times it will BSOD three or four times in a row shortly after coming up from the previous BSOD reboot.

From what I can gather, Windows is attempting (and failing) to instruct some device attached to the system (presumably via one of the remote sessions) to enter into a power saving mode and BSODs as a result. I have disabled USB power saving on the server but this does not resolve the issue. I have tested one of the RDSH servers by removing it from the connection pool and left it running without clients for a number of months and it has so far not given me any problems.

I took the MEMORY.DMP file (which is available for anyone to peruse upon request) and tried my best to analyse it using the tools available, and it seems to point to hidusb.sys, though I am unsure as to how to trace the problem any further.

All RDSH servers are patched with latest crticial/security patches as of a week ago.

Any possible thoughts as to avenues I could explore to diagnose/resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance for any advice you might be able to offer.

Hyperv enhanced session and RDP

I have a windows 10 computer and it has a hyperv windows 10 VM within it. When I try to log into the VM using enhanced session mode of HyperV, which requires RDP support, my logon is refused with the classic 'you need the right to sign in...".

I have verified the following:

The account I am using to logon is an administrator account and also has the User right 'allow logon on through terminal services'

Remote desktop connection is enabled through control panel system.

Firewall port for RDP is open and allows anyone in.

Is there something I have missed?

Windows Server RDS Freezing with Flickering "Not Responding" in the top bar

$

We have around 15~ Remote Desktop Session Host servers of varying versions (2012 R2, 2016 and 2019) which are experiencing freezing and flickering issues with "Not Responding" appearing in the top bar and the program being unresponsive when switching between tabs. Other symptoms include screen flickering and, when in Task Manager, the tabs sometimes disappear until you roll the mouse over them. These issues started appearing after the weekend of 23rd March 2019 (23/03/19).

I have been scouring forums looking for other people with the same issue but can't find anyone with similar symptoms except someone called Chris_UKDE and his questions haven't been answered either.

At first, we thought that this was caused by a Windows Update but we have been through all of the updates and cannot find any consistent update or lack of update across the servers that seems to have caused the problem. We thought it might have been KB4489889 but after uninstalling this, the problem still remains.

We have opened a case with Microsoft and we are waiting for them to analyse some logs that they gathered on Friday and they have advised various registry fixes and disabling hardware acceleration but none of these have worked. I am taking to the forums to see if anyone else is a. having any luck with their diagnosis and b. having these issues at all(!) and c. if we manage to fix it, to share it with you so you don't have to experience the same pain we have.

The issue does NOT appear to happen in Safe Mode BUT when running a Selective Startup from MSConfig, these issues still happen, eluding that it's still a Microsoft element causing the problem. We are mainly seeing the problems in Microsoft Office programs but we do get a few issues in other Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer/Task Manager and also Chrome.

Most of the servers are running on VMWare ESXi 6.0-6.5 but we do have one native Windows Server with the problem. We have tried updating/uninstalling VMWare tools but this does not seem to fix anything. We also thought this might have been related to the video driver, so we booted the server with "Base Video" options in MSConfig but this still didn't fix the problems.

I am hoping that there are others in the same position as me, looking for an answer but having no forum to discuss it on, hence this post. Any advice greatly appreciated.

VDI Shutdown inactive machines

Hello,

Is there any documented approach to minimize the number of running VDIs?

I'd like to :

  1. Schedule starting the machines early in the morning.
  2. Schedule shutting down the machine after working hours.
  3. Allow the users to start their machine without admin support.

1 and 2 are easy, my concern is with 3. or any other recommended approach.

Thanks

RD Desktop Environment - Shared Applications

$

We have two W2019 Servers running both with the Server RD Session Host role installed. Lets call them Server A and Server B.

  • Server A is used as a RD Desktop Environment
  • Server B is used for Shared Applications like Word, Excel etc.

Our idea is that the user does logon on Server A, accessing the Applications from Server B.

Basically this does work well however file type association seems not to be working in this environment. We are getting the following event on Server A:

Event ID: 1026

Source: RemoteApp and Desktop Connections

"The installation of the default connection has been cancelled. A default connection cannot be used on a system that is part of a Remote Desktop Services deployment."

Default connection to webfeed.aspx has be configured via GPO and has been applied successful, file type association is configured for the shared Application also.

On Server A the file type association is not working so the user can not open a file from Windows Explorer directly.

As the Event Log Warning does it say really clear is it not possible to use shared Applications on a Desktop Environment with working file type association ?

Adding another icon/ rdp shortcut to the RDWEB Page

Hi,

I have set up a Windows Server 2016 RDS environment which is as follows:

1 RD Gateway Server (RDGW1)

1 RD Web Server (RDWeb1)

5 RD Session Hosts (RDS1 to 5)

1 RD Broker (RDBroker1) - also does licensing.

gateway url is: gateway.domain.com which points internally and externally to the RDGW1 server.

The RD gateway and RD Web servers are in the DMZ.

We now want to implement Azure MFA using the NPS Extension as described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/authentication/howto-mfa-nps-extension-rdg

To minimize impact, I set up another Gateway server in the DMZ called RDGW2, along with an NPS server in the LAN (NPS1). Following the documentation linked to above, I was able to successfully set this up.

To test, I have downloaded the RDP icon from the RDWeb page and edited it to direct via RDGW2 rather than RDGW1. I also created an External DNS entry for gateway2.domain.com pointing to the WAN IP for RDGW2.  This works fine from outside of the network and I get MFA prompts and can see connections going through RDGW2.

I now need to publish 2 RDP shortcuts. One would be using the old non MFA gateway (RDGW1)  - this is already there. The second would be the edited RDP Shortcut that uses the new MFA configured Gateway (RDGW2).

Is there any way I can publish the second RDP icon? Perhaps by editing the relevant web page or locating where the original icon is located? Publishing via RemoteApp is not an option. The reason for having both is to provide a transition environment and possible future DR environment (in case there are issues with Azure).

Thanks,

RDVH Delegation Rights Error

$

Hello all, need some help in determining why the ConnectionBroker can't see the delegated rights to the assigned OU for creating & deleting virtual desktops.

Environment:

  • Forest: Windows2008Forest
  • Domain: Windows2008Domain
  • Schema: Windows2012R2
  • DCs - Mix of 2012 and 2012R2 Servers
  • MSVDI- (CB, Lic, Web, SH, VH) = All 2019 Servers

Regardless of the method I try to use I'm stymied in creating a virtual desktop pool.

I've been able to successfully get RDSH working, but not the RDVH.

I've validated the permissions on the OU.  I've cleared out the permissions, setup new OUs to try, re-run the commands, used the script that they provide.  Permissions are there...but the UI and PowerShell commands simply don't acknowledge the permissions.  I've even tried (and reverted) given Everyone full access to the OU.

Errors:

In the 'Create Collection' UI Wizard I receive the following text when clicking Next in the 'Unattended Settings' section.

  • The RD Connection Broker server does not have access to add the virtual desktops to the Active Directory domain.  Configure access by using the Active Directory page of the Deployment Properties.

In the Deployment Properties, Active Directory section I receive the following text:

  • The specified Active Directory Domain Services organizational unit is not configured with the appropriate permissions to automatically create virtual desktops.  To configure the appropriate permissions, click Apply.

Clicking apply and/or using the 'Generate Script' button and running the script applies the permissions...but the UI does not acknowledge that it works.  Visually validated the permissions through AD.

Ran Test-RDOUAccess and received an error -2147463168, Failed to test access for the Connection Broker.

Ran Grand-RDOUAccess and received the same error -2147463168, says that my current user didn't have the rights.  I tried with a domain admin and enterprise admin account...still didn't work.

Hoping that someone can give me an idea on what to try next.

Thanks!

Windows server 2008 R2 - How can I fix the warning message (120 days) appears when using remote desktop session

$

Hello

I am using windows server 2008 R2 with multiple users (5 users accounts). I facing a problem where a 'pop up' warning message appears saying * you have 120 days left ......* every time when I or other users logged in to this server. I tried to check through the remote desktop licencing server and add the license server's name and its credentials (Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration) in the configuration. Then there is no error and green tick appears in the License diagnosis tab under 'Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration' seem every thing fine. However, when log off and log in again I need to supply the credentials again and again for every time and for every user who log in. Also, the days are reducing meaning , I am left with 118 days more for remote desktop sessions .

Q: Why every time the user logged in to the server , still getting this warning popup, although a valid license server name and its credentials were supplied ??

Q How can I fix this problem . I need complete solution for multiple users ?

I hope you understand the problem.

Thanks

Faisal
