Connection Broker only redirects to one entry in RRDNS cluster

$

Hi all,

Our Remote Desktop Gateways are configured to receive their remote apps from the connection broker.  On our connection broker ,in it's remote App sources in Remote Desktop Connection Manager there is "farm.local".

Farm.local is a RRDNS entry comprised of 5 separate NLB Clusters, the TTL of Farm.Local is only 3 minutes.  Meaning the DNS entry should rotate every 3 minutes.

When people connect VIA the gateway, they get directed to one NLB cluster and the connection broker never rotates after that.  If I take farm.local out of the RemoteApp Sources in Remote Desktop Connection Manager on our connection broker, then re-add farm.local they are directed to a different NLB cluster.

It seems Remote Desktop Connection Manager gets the initial IP that the RRDNS is currently on and never updates past that.

RDWeb Access Using FireFox Browser

I would like to know if anyone else has run into this problem using the Firefox version 23.0.1 browser to access your RDWeb site. Were you able to find a fix?

Our office has relaxed the browser standard from MS Internet Explorer and now allowed Firefox. When using IE to access our remote RDWeb site it works flawlessly. The situation is different with FF.  I’m trying to find a fix for when the second web-page appears e.g. (https://xxxx.xxxx.org/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/default.aspx) this message appears (Searching for available RemoteApp programs...) after you have clicked on application icon. The selected application does no start only this message remains.

Any and all help to fix this problem will be appreciated.

RDS Licencing Questions

Hi Guys,

I have a single W2008R2 RDS server that is currently configured in Per Device licencing mode with 15 licences.  I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping someone can help with:

1. Is there any way of using the server in a mixed Client and Device CAL mode?  I know I can add User CAL's in the Licencing Manager along with the existing Device CAL's, but I don't know how to assign them.  Does the server only assign User CAL's when all the device CAL's have been used, or is it a random thing, or does it never assign any User CAL's when in Device Mode?

2. When I want to revoke Device CAL's I can only seemingly revoke a couple and the server then informs me I cannot revoke any more licences for about 6 weeks and that I should purchase additional licences!  Is this by design and does anyone know why?  I'm hoping to assign 3 User CAL's to users that move between offices and use different devices to connect to the RDS server.  I don't want them using all of my Device CAL's.

Thank you

Jonathan

VDI issues

So the issue I am having seems to be a problem with the connection brokers. I have highly available connection brokers so there is a database involved. When I click connect on the virtual desktop in RD Web Access it gets to Loading the virtual machine…, sits there for about 5 minutes and then says that the connection was cancelled. The events I refer to below happened when (but not because) I had removed the second connection broker from the group so I did not have to comb two sets of event logs.

The main “smoking gun” event is in the Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Operational log Event ID 8479 which says, “Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not run the Hyper-V WMI job. Error description: [Virtual Desktop Name] failed to modify resources. (Virtual machine ID [redacted]) See also Hyper-V event logs. Hresult: 0x80078005.”

The event it is referring to in the Hyper-V log is Event ID 15090 Which says “[Virtual Desktop Name] failed to modify resources. (Virtual machine ID[redacted]),” which follows a similar event that happens one second earlier: Event ID 16300 which says, “Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7). (Virtual machine ID[redacted]).”

To go one step further, there a couple of events in Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Debug and Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Analytic.

Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Debug: Event ID 17163 which says, “Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not retrieve a section in the virtual machine metadata XML file for the virtual machine with the GUID of [redacted]. Virtual machine GUID: [redacted] Hresult: 0x80070490.” That happens in two sets of two events, all identical about 1.5 minutes apart.

Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent/Analytic: Event ID 12801 which says, “Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to open zeroconfig channel to the virtual machine [V-LB-ENGRC-1] . Hresult: 0x80070002.” This one happens in two different events simultaneously with the same message and different Hresults: the one above and 0x800704D4.

The storage is two clustered, physical file servers with iSCSI storage hosting a scale-out file server. The hosts are clustered. I followed lots of Microsoft documentation to get the local groups and folder permissions populated.

RemoteApp on 2K8R2 - How to create a folder for organizing RemoteApps

All,

I'd like to start creating folders for organizing my RemoteApps like you can do on Server 2K12.  Is this possible on Server 2K8R2?

Thanks!

VDI Gateway fails to redirect

Hi, I've been struggling with installing remote desktop services VDI on a server 2012 server.

Currently, I have the Remote desktop services standard deployment set up on one server

RD connection broker, RD gateway, RD session host, and RD Virtualization host  set up on the same server.

I created my remote desktop collection using these instructions: http://aecsahin.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/deploying-windows-8-virtual-desktop.html

I can get to the RDWeb gateway site, click on the icon for the collection, and after I authenticate, it fails with:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer "GatewayServer.mydomain" for one of these reasons:

1) your user account is not listed in the RD Gateway's permission list

2) you might have specified the remote computer in Netbios format, but the RD Gateway is expecting an FQDN or....

On the server, I see the following 2 events:

(First Event) ID 8467 Warning: MS-Windows-TemrinalServices-TSV-VMHostAgent  Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine [SWMgr1] .
Hresult: 0x8000FFFF

(where SWMgr1 is the name of one of the vms in my collection).

(Second event) ID 301 Error Ms-Windows-TerminalServices-Gateway  The user "mydomain\myuser", on client computer "10.101.0.101", did not meet resource authorization policy requirements and was therefore not authorized to resource "SWMgr1.mydomain.local;SWMGR1;10.101.16.49". The following error occurred: "23002".

In searching on the second error, I found information about registering the network policy server in Active directory, which I did.  It doesn't change the behavior.  Searching for Event 8467 is fruitless.

I have also checked my CAPs and RAPs multiple times, and re-created them, but to no avail.  I have also ensured that I can connect to one of the VMs directly using remote desktop (SWMgr1, in this case)

I greatly appreciate anyone who takes a look and might offer some advice.

Kevin

P.S.

I started posting last week here, but have reconfigured and re-created my virtual desktop collection RAP, and CAP, so things are a lot different than when this was posted:

2012 RDS assigned connection fails after touching vm settings

$

I have RDS VDI setup...  I have a collection of assigned VM's if I change for example the memory for a particular VM the user assigned to that VM can no longer connect through RDweb or via connection broker....

How can I allocate more resources for power users as they are identified????    The  connection basically times out connecting to the session...  I can see in the logs on the connection broker that authentication works and it finds the correct VM for the assigned user...  I don't see any error as to why the connection fails though.

Any help is appreciated.... MS  seems to have a ways to go with VDI ...  managing the VM's, pools,  etch is not real easy... Not to mention the mess you see in VMM when looking at the virtualization hosts :(

Server 2012 R2 Pooled VDI Collection creation failed

$

Good morning all:

I have created a new 2012 R2 cluster for VDI purposes.  The cluster passed each Cluster Validation test.  The cluster also contains CSV storage, a virtual switch per host, and the required roles for RDS and Hyper-V.  The virtual switch is configured for External access and the Nexus 5K is configured with all necessary VLANs (180, 181, etc).  The RD Hosts sit on what I will call the 180 network.  The virtual switches have a 180 network address.  Our VDI will require DHCP addresses from another network I will call 181.

The RDS VDI collection creation is failing with the status message:

"Failed: A new virtual desktop could not be created from the desktop template.  Ensure that all Hyper-V servers in the deployment have the same configuration, and then try again."

My intial suspicion is with DHCP.  I have seen other posts warning about DHCP.  Currently there is no DHCP space available on the 180 network.  What steps would I take to allow the VDI collection to be created using DHCP from the 181 network?

Any other suggestions or steps to verify correct setup is appreciated.

RDC 6.3.9600 unable to complete RDG connection to Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 R2

I have a very strange, and puzzling issue with the RDC 6.3 client. I have two different Windows 8.1 PC's that are unable to complete their login to either a Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 R2 RDG environment.  They initiate the connection from the RDWeb host (which is the same as the RDG and RD Connection Broker), they sit there at "Initiating remove connection..."  If I use the 6.2 client that's present on Windows 8 or even Windows 7, no issues.

I have two pairs of Remote Desktop Session Hosts behind two different RDG's, each with the same OS version.  I have no licensing issues, as I have plenty of TSCals.  What can I do to troubleshoot this?!?!?

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

How Can I Identify an RDS User's Shared Drive?

I have an application that needs to upload/download data to/from an RDS user's local shared drive.  I can't find anything that tells me how to do this programmatically.

My server is running Server 2008 R2 foundation division.  I expect to have a .bat file which I can execute from my app that will obtain the RDS User's shared drive(s) and write them to a .txt file for use by my app.

I'd be very grateful if someone can tell me just how to identify the users' drive(s)?

Remote desktop not working after uninstalling remote desktop Session Host Server

$

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my Windows Server 2008 R2. After uninstalling the Remote Desktop Session Host Server Role, I can't connect to the machine from remote anymore. I've tried with clients both from Windows 8 and other Windows Server 2008 R2 but with no luck.

When I try to connect, I get the error message that the Remote Desktop client can't connect to the remote compute for one of these reasons:

1) remote access to the server is not enabled.

2) the remote computer is turned off.

3) the remote computer is not available on the network.

On the Server Manager, Remote Desktop is flagged as Enabled. In the System Properties - Remote tab, the option "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" is checked.

The computer is ON and it is connected to the network. I can browse the Internet and the server can be pinged from remote. The Firewall is completely OFF (public, private and domain profile).

I ran the Remote Desktop client both with the IP address and the domain name....same result.

Is there anything else I should check? I am honestly clueless about the cause of this issue.

Thank you,

Filippo

RD Web 2008R2 Users Accessing Unassigned Apps

We are restricting RD Web applications with User Assignments in the RemoteApp properties.

The Remote App Terminal server is a Windows 2008R2 machine. There aren't any errors that stand out in the logs.

In the Remote App manager we are assigning permissions to that APP. They are domain users.

Our issue is all users can see the app that is assigned to one user.

RD Web Access, avoid "Connection to..." window, lower color resolution

Hi all,

we are using RD Web Access with IE 10 to provide our windows application to the users. The server is running windows server 2008 R2.

Now we have two questions:

1. Is there a change to avoid the "Connecting to..." window after clicking the application icon?

2. The application is displayed in lower color resolution. Is there a way to change this so that it looks like as it is running locally?

Thanks a lot in advance

Remote Desktop saved credentials

Last week my saved credentials started deleting for no reason that I can find. If I connect to a remote server and save the password.. and then check the vault, the set up is saved. The next day, or after a reboot the vault is empty. Have had the same windows 7 machine for years and the same saved remote connections...and have never had to retype in a password.

I have searched for any solution but cannot find one that works. I cannot find a virus that may have changed a set up, and would not know why all the saved credentials in all sections of the vault are being deleted. I am familiar with how the credentials work, but know of no setting that would delete them

Thanks

Receiving System.IO.FileLoadException from time to time

$

We are having an issue with some of our servers after updating some custom DLLs (DLLs doesn't go the GAC, just fully trusted location). We have multiple versions of our application in the same server. The older version seems to run fine without error. The newer version with the updated custom DLLs does.

Our application will sometimes throw a System.IO.FileLoadException with no reference to the file it is trying to load. The problem doesn't happen all the time. Normally, after a reboot the error goes away. However, there are some users that report seeing the error later in the week. We have a server that was experiencing the error in the morning but later that day no more incidents.

Basically, the error clears up after a reboot of the server or just clears up on it's own. Any ideas?

RDWEB and DNS troubles, Internal vs. External

$

Wondering is someone can assist.

I have deployed a new RDWEB setup using Windows Server 2012R2.  I have all certificates in place, using a wildcard cert, all DNS entries as well.

The site works great internally and externally, except if I try to use a domain joined system externally.

I believe my issue is related to our internal domain name is the same as the external domain name.

I have setup external DNS: demo.mydomain.com point to external IP  of RD gateway

I have setup internal DNS: demo.mydomain.com points to internal IP of RD gateway.

Again, I can access the site and all published apps fine from public computers, and even my tablet.  The issue is only when I use a domain joined system, like my laptop, that I take off-site.

I can get to the RDWEB site, log in, and see all the published apps. When I click on an app, it tries to connect, and seems to time out and give this error:

This computer can't connect to the remote computer.

The two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or network support.

Any help is appreciated.

Steve

The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol

I have read several posts about this issue and nothing has solved it. This is only happening to two VMs so far. If I add the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to the VM I am not able to connect. It gives me the error "The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol." According to one of the other forum posts, the "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent" and "RemoteFX Session Licensing" services are both running. I do not see the "RemoteFX Session Licensing" service on any of my servers.

Microsoft Remote Desktop App MAC problems connecting farm

We have a setup with server1 hosting gateway, connection broker and licensing RD roles.

In addition to that we have server2 and server3 with RD host role installed and members of a farm called farm_1.

We use round robin for loadbalancing with two a-record pointing to each ip-adress of server2 and server3.

When connecting with the new Microsoft Remote Desktop app for MAC we experience problems when for a example server2 wants to redirect to server3 because of fully load. The error message on client is "the request session access is denied".

Below is copied from the logg of the MAC RDP client before the erorr message appear on the client.
