Adding Virtual Desktops to a CSV

$

I have 4 seperate 2TB CSV's on 2 hosts in a cluster running RDS. I want to add more Virtual Desktops to a collection, but it does not allow me to specify where I want to create the new desktops. It will only ever let me create them on the first CSV. So I have to create them, and then cut and paste them into a different CSV. This casues a lot of fragmentation and disk thrashing on a system that has 120 Virtual desktops running on it.

I've tried to go into the registry and hack the location to use a new CSV, but it still will only create the new desktops in CSV1.

Does anyone know how to get around this limitation?

How can I setup virtual ip numbers per remote session on RDS-Server 2012

I have setup a (hyper-v) rds-server with server 2012 that is working just fine (inclucing rdweb). I would like the users who login to the server with remote desktop get a virtual ip-adress so that they don't all have the same adress. This is better for our software. I can find a lot of articles for terminal server 2003 and server 2008 but not for server 2012. Does anyone have a good lead?

RDWeb sign in issues and display issues

Hello,

We've recently deployed RDS with 3 servers.

ServerA - Gateway, RDWeb, Connection Broker

ServerB and ServerC are configured the same -  RemoteApp, RD Session Host

When accessing the RDWeb internally we do not receive the RemoteApp icons for the published apps.  The apps are there, and when clicking them, they launch. However, when they launch we are greeted with a blank login prompt. After signing in at that prompt, the app will load.

When you access RDWeb externally you can see the RemoteApp icons, but are still greeted with the second login prompt.

We would like to have icons visible internally and the 2nd login prompted removed externally and internally. We've tried SSO with no luck.

Thanks

Get Public IP Adress in a Terminal Sever session

Hello everyone,

at first I apologize for my bad english, I'm not a native Speaker.

And now my problem: I want to differ an internal RDP Session from an external. The explanation is simple. We (my Colleague and me) try to create a Program which needs to know about where the user connects to the Terminal Server. If he is in his office our Program should start "normally", if he is at home or somewhere else, the user must type in an password.
The second Problem is, our program must be startet IN the Terminal Session, because we don't know on what type of client (Thin, Mac, Android...) the RDP session is startet.

I really hope you get it, it's hard for me to explain. I'll answer any question as soon as possible!

Thank you,

Christian

Hello, to those that may have the same issue and have been about to identify the source of the problem and or worked out a fix. Our company, GDS is currently operating under a BYOD structure. We have a DC/DNS/DHCP server and an RDS server for which uses use to log into a virtual work space. DOC Redirect has been set on users profiles via GPO to have their docs redirected to the RDS server "data partition" for which we have reserved for such. For web browsing we have in place Google Chrome Business with a few GPO tweaks. Over the last several months we have been noticing that the users bookmarks in chrome primarily has been getting deleted. It is really hard to pin point as to what is causing this to happen. It is as if chrome is resetting itself. We once thought that it was due to windows sec. update but we are now thinking that it could be a resume of chrome updates. Any ideas?

Server 2012 - unable to print via RDP

$

Hi

I recently have setup Server 2012 Essentials. The version I got is from the Windows download website - the evaluation version for 180 days. I have not purchased the license as yet, because I wanted to try and test everything first.

Currently this has been setup as a Domain controller.

The server's purpose is to run 2 business applications directly on the server, the way this will be done is via RDP.

I can RDP to the server ok and login.

I have installed the printer drivers on Server 2012, and when I RDP into the server, my local printers come up as redirected.

However, when I try to print, The job gets stuck in the spooler - with Error Printing as the error message.

So far I have tried the following:

1) Windows 8 - 64bit connecting in, same issue (Printer: Samsung SCX-4521F)

2) Windows 7 - 64 bit and 32 bit - same issue (Printer: Samsung SCX-4521F)

3) Windows 7 - Different Printer Fuji Xerox M205 fw - same issue

4) Windows 7 - HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g - wireless printer (Works) (Different PC at another location)

5) Windows 7 - HP Photosmart C7200 - wireless printer (Works) (Different PC at another location)

I have searched everywhere for a solution and I am not getting anywhere. I have tried installing the RDS roles, however as this is a DC, this will not work.

I have installed the print server role to help manage the print drivers and to see if this would make a difference..

I have followed these guides to see if I can use Easyprint... as this is a DC, I cant get this to work.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=968605

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/28/using-remote-desktop-easy-print-in-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx?PageIndex=2

I have modified the Group Policies to ensure they Easy Print is disabled.

I have given full rights to the C:\Windows\System32\Spool folder.

I have installed the printer locally on the server and tried to print - this works fine.

Is this a driver issue ? Server 2012 bug? what is it ?

As per above, the only printers I can print to over RDP are HP wireless printers...Any assistance would be great... this is really doing my head in....

Server 2012 Remote App pop up windows hidden behind main window

I have a RD server running server 2012, it is a remote app server, i am having the issue of pop ups are hidden behind the main window. the users have to Alt+tab to get the window to come up .  I have seen this issue before for windows server 2008  and was able to resolve it with a patch. Is there a patch for server 2012  or a known work around that will affect all the users on the server ?

RD License server gone

I have a 2-node XenApp farm running on Windows 2008 R2.  I had originally configured it as a Remote Desktop Services farm to try using the application publishing that is built into windows 2008 R2, but have since installed Citrix XenApp 6.5 to handle the published applications.

I originally configured a RD License server for these machines, but this server has been shut down and reformatted.  My users are accessing XenApp published applications, but I am seeing Event ID 1131 warnings that the Session Host server could not contact the Remote Desktop License Server.  I am seeing references to this problem in the RD Session Host configuration interface.  There is no verbiage in any of the things I have seen indicating that I have a specific number of days grace period left.

Can I set up a new RD Licensing server and configure my servers to point to it?  Or is there something more involved since the old license server was taken down without regard to its function?  For the time being, I anticipate no more than a few dozen concurrent connections.  Are there any specific system requirements for this functionality, or can I install the licensing service on something like my DHCP server or a Domain Controller?

Thank you.

Kernel Security Question

Hi All!

I'd like to know about kernel security in an RDS session. I hope this is the proper forum - I didnt see one for kernel security.

So our security group is always worried about different applications running on the same server being able to access each others data.

If 2 separate data sessions are running on the same server (either the same app or different apps), how secure is the separation of the data in these 2 sessions in the kernel?

In other words how are each sandboxed sessions kept separate?  Are they sandboxed at the kernel level?

Any pointers to tech docs would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

RDS 2012 - RemoteApp is flickering

I have an application published on a Windows 2012 RDS server. Running the application from within a remote desktop session works fine, but when accessing via RemoteApp (tried on XP SP3, and 7 SP1), the application window flickers when moving the mouse, or clicking on buttons or dropdowns within the application, etc. Has anyone seen this before?

Windows Server 2008 RDS question

Hi everyone.  We have a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environment (Windows Server 2008 R2) in which we have a load balancer server (e.g. - a gateway) and two host controllers.  It's all setup for load balancing and we're using it to serve a single application to our user base through RemoteApp's.  For informational purposes the application is not installed on these RDS servers.  The application is run using a batch file that references a .kix script that runs an executable that doesn't actually have an installer package.  It's all very interesting...  8)

Anyway, we're experiencing some strange issues with lag, user's sessions locking up, etc. and some or most of these issues appear to us to be caused by the fact that a user might be routed to rdsapp1 in the morning, disconnect and later that afternoon reconnect and end up on rdsapp2.  So we wanted to make absolutely certain that using this system in the way it's been setup with a gateway/load balancer isn't causing the issue.

That being said what we'd like to do is have a couple of users test running and using the application by connecting to the same host connection server every time instead of using the load balancer.  The issue is that I don't know how to do this or if it's even possible.  I've created a new RemoteApp on each of the host connection servers (rdsapp1 and rdsapp2) but of course when I attempt to run them I get a message about how the server I'm attempting to connect to isn't the server I'm being directed to or that the computer you tried to reach is not the one you specified.

Is it possible to do what I'm attempting to do without breaking the load balancing capability currently in place?

OK....

I am running 2k8R2 Standard, I have several users that work from RDP with windows 7 32-bit. My printers are HP 4345mfc, the remote users and the main users in the office have the same.

My problem is that when I try to print from RDP nothing happens, The  previous Admin patched this problem with "TS print" I however do not like this approach as its very slow, and not very great. I have enabled, disabled, deleted and reinstalled every configuration and driver I could think of and yet nothing. HOWEVER, If I use my iMac at home to connect RDP I have NO PROBLEM printing!

What gives??

Sorry Im rather rusty at this..

Thanks

Users not reconnected to disconnected sessions

Have an issue on my small 2008 R2 RDS farm.

Server1 = Session Broker

Server2 and 3 = RD Session Hosts sitting behind a simple DNSRR

I have the GPO option enabled for allowing only one session for a user.

What is happening is a user will disconnect and then reconnect however when I look I will see their original disconnected session on the server, and a new active one on the other server. So for some reason they are not being reconnected to their disconnected sessions.

I saw there was an issue with this on 2008R1 but the fix does not apply to R2.

Any ideas?

Shared Gateway and RDWeb with separate Session and Connection Broker servers

$

We have many different departments in separate OUs for our configuration.  Each OU currently has their own Connection Broker and Session Hosts.  I would like to have a single set of Gateway and RDWeb servers load balanced and publicly accessible for all the different OUs.  Each OU would still have their own Connection Broker and Session hosts.  This would allow us to scale to the size we need, and also minimize the number of public IP addresses and URLs needed for external access.  It seems that RDWeb loses its configuration (published apps and desktops) each time I configure the next department.

Question:  Do I have to have a shared Connection broker for all departments/OUs as well?  Or is there a way to still have a connection broker for each department/OU ?

We are moving to Windows 2012 R2

NULL SID Security Log Event ID 4625 when attempting logon to 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host

$

This is a new deployment of Server 2008 R2 in a newly created 08 R2 active directory on a newlyt installed 08 R2 RDSH server.

A new generic user is created in AD. That user can log on to the terminal server on the console just fine. But that user cannot logon via RDP. Furthermore, the domain admin credentials also cannot logon via RDP.

When either set of credentials is used, the logon attempt registered in the Windows Security Even Log as a denied attempt with Event ID 4625 reporting a NULL SID.

Troubleshooting: The RDSH has already been disjoined and rejoined to the domain. Also, curious note, there are three ways to save the user account on the RDSH server as a valid user account which has permissions to logon. The one Microsoft recommends is to open computer management and edit the remote desktop users group. When I the accounts here and click apply, they immediately dissapear. Secondly, I can open the computer properties and go to the remote tab. There I find the user accounts added using the previous method are enumerated but not displaying correctly. They show up with the RDSH server name and a question mark. The last way, is to open the Remote Desktop Session Configuration tool and edit the properties of the rdp connection and go to the security tab. This was the only place I could get a user to ‘stick’ but the logon attempts still show a NULL SID and access is denied.

I have scoured every bit of RDS documenation I can find with no luck.

Thanks,
Chris

RDS 2012 ntuser.dat issue

$

We have a test RDS 2012 server configured running the RD Connection Broker, RD Session Host, and RD Web Access roles.  We installed an ERP application we are currently running on TS 2008 and RDS 2008 R2 servers.

The application is running fine so far with the exception of making a change to the users ntuser.dat file.  We are not using roaming profiles, they are local to the server.

On the TS 2008 and RDS 2008 R2 servers we make sure the user is logged off and run regedit and load the users hive file. (ntuser.dat) We expand Control Panel>Colors and set the GrayText option to 0 0 255. (color blue)  Makes it easier for our "older users" to see it.

If we do the same thing on the 2012 RDS server the change is made but when the user logs in it still shows as the default gray (109 109 109).  The profile is not temporary. We tried to update the .Default and Default profiles so when a new user logs in for the first time it will be set to 0 0 255.  This is how it is set on the 2008 and 2008R2 servers.  But the GrayText stays the default GrayText.  Has anyone else run into this?

New User Profile Every Login

$

Hello,

We have a Citrix XenApp 6.5 farm on Windows Server 2008 R2, and use Citrix User Profile Management to manage our user profiles.  Recently, we have come across an issue where Windows is overwriting the user profile at every login.

Basically, when a user logs in, it will display the "Setting up personalized settings for:" message every time.  This causes all user customization's synchronized by UPM to be lost.

Synchronized files stay in place, but anything created by Windows during user profile creation is overwritten.

After much troubleshooting with Citrix, it appears UPM is operating correctly without error.  This leads me to believe there is something on the Windows side that may be causing this issue.

Thanks,

Zak
