Windows Session Based RDP with VPN apps inside.

Hi, all

   I installed Session Based RDP and have 2 big problems.

   I need to provide VPN apps like forticlient in my RDP server. But when a RDP user logs on RD session host and start an VPN connection, other users will see it and they can also use this VPN connection, how can I solve this problem.

   The second problem, I didn't install RD gateway on my server, and load balance on my collection is not working, all connection goes to server 1, even I set the connection limit to 1, client just show the error about over the connection limit, and never redirect to server 2.

   Somebody help me! This is really urgent!

Running Office 2007 on Windows Server 2012 Standard in RDS

So the client has Windows Server 2012 Standard R2, it is not a DC.  Setup Remote Services (formerly known as Terminal Server).  He runs Office 2007 on the server.  When using LogMeIn, he can run the Office apps fine.  When doing RDP, and at starting an Office APP he gets this meesage, "This Copy of Microsoft Office Excel cannot be used on Terminal Server.  Please contact your local authorized Microsoft retailer for more information."  We did this and purchased 5 RDS CALS, installed the TS licensing Server and installed and activated the RDS CALS.  Have not rebooted the server - was not prompted to reboot.  However, when looking in the Application Log on this server this error is displayed:

Error 1002  The program mmc.exe version 6.3.9600.16384 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

Is there something else that needs to be done to activate the RDS CALS??  Got no error messages when installing the CALS, just activation and installation was successful.  I know that to run APPS on Terminal Server you need the RDS CALS - Microsoft verified that as well.  Perhaps we need to tweak the Sonic Firewall settings??

How to configure ARR to Reverse Proxy to RD Gateway

We have an ARR server in the DMZ working fine providing reverse proxy for our internal Exchange Server 2013 environment and I've tried to create rules to allow access to the internal RD Gateway as well but when testing from an external client it never connects.

Does anyone have any configuration notes for how ARR should be configured to allow reverse proxy of RD Gateway?

2008 R2 RDS - IE Security Settings syncing to Staff Profiles

Hello,

I have a member of staff piloting our now RDS server for remote access. 

Since he logged on to the server, hes normal desktop PC wont allow him to access the IE correctly.

I have a feeling the RDS security settings have synced to his profile and now cannot access IE on his normal desktop.

Has anyone else had this problem? The user cannot change IE security settings on his profile and I cannot see a GPO enforcing them not to be able to. Weird.

Server 2008 TS with Oracle JInitiator issue...

I'm running two 2008 servers, one as the TS gateway and the other as the TS server.  When accessing our Oracle apps server either through a session or directly on the server, the app would connect through the IE  7.0 browser, authenticate, then the Oracle apps would launch.  

Out of nowhere, the browser starts crashing after logging in and trying to access the Oracle app.  Since then, I've tried reinstalling the JInitiator 1.3.1.18 locally and through the TS App install wizard with no success.  I was able to install the newest version of Firefox and get it to work with JInitiator.  The IE crash generates an error in the event log that resembles this...

"Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918f11, faulting module jvm.dll, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4044ff31, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0004ed44, process id 0x17ac, application start time 0x01c97b1354e4b544."

Any suggestions, recommendations, or more to the point, a resolution, is greatly appreciated.

Windows Search Index and User Profile Disks

Hi All,

I have two RDS servers (A 2012 and a 2012R2) working with User profile disks and I'm getting what I think is an issue.

When a user logs on for first time and configures its outlook profile all is indexed, OK.

But when the user logs off there's an event saying "Windows Search Service indexed data for user 'domain\user' successfully removed in response to user profile deletion.", so I assume that when user logs off, the UPD is unmounted and then the RDS server eliminates their cached index due to a profile deletion.

Is there any option to not to having to rebuild the index every time the user logs into the server? maybe by storing the index data into their respective UPD? This is so annoying, because the index process needs to index an average of 6GB profile every time the users logs in, and the server performance gets impacted.

Any response will be appreciated.

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has experience with implementing Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I am doing an RDS design for a platform where we only need an RDS Session Host, Licensing Server and Connection Broker. We do not need web access as these servers will simply be jump boxes internally!

However, implementing this correctly in our test environment has proved to be tricky. The options are:

  1.      Use the Server Manager and do a traditional install via Roles and Features ( specifically add the Session Host, Licensing Server and Connection Broker). The installation process seems to go through ok in this scenario but when I head over to the Remote Desktop Services section of the Server Manager I simply get the message 'An RDS Deployment does not exist in the server pool. To create a deployment head to Roles and Features'.
  2.      Use the specific ‘Remote Desktop Services installation’ option on the Server Manager and do a Session Based Desktop deployment and Quick Start. This installation process seems to go through correctly and the Remote Desktop Section seems to be working correctly via the Server Manager. However this process is ‘hard locked’ i.e. it installs the session host, web access and connection broker. I can then remove the web access component later from Roles/ Features.

Is there a best practice (if any) for installation? i.e. Will there be any issues down the line if I remove RDS Web Access from my server while following method 2?

There is a complete lack of documentation from Microsoft here so not sure what to do! Just need a basic RDS session based deployment.

Remote Fx - RDP issue

Hello All,

I've got an odd issue.  I have two RDSH hosts setup with same identical Hardware and software, drivers and network configuration.

2012R2 Datacenter

2 Dell R720 server, K1 Grid Card in each. 

Windows 7 SP1 x64 guests. RDP Protocol 8.1 supported.

5 Collections - personal desktops

When I live migrate any vm from host 1 to host 2 I'm unable to rdp with remotefx enabled after its moved.  If I remove the remotefx adapter on that vm after its migrated to host 2 RDP works just fine?   Also, If move the vm back to host 1 RDP works with or without Remotefx?   I'm not seeing anything in event viewer. 

This one has me stumped.  I've uninstalled drivers, integration services and still no luck.  

Here is the error I get when I rdp to any remotefx enabled vm on 2nd host.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can't open IE 11 for users of my domain

Hi,

I have prepared a windows 2012 server standard r2, acting as remote desktop server

At the beginning, all is ok but now (after some win updates ????), my users can't open IE 11

I have a blank page for 5-6 seconds and then ie 11 closes.

I have tested several tips :

- started with -extoff : can' start

- started as Administrator with domain Administror : It works but it's not a solution

- nothing in events browser (sometimes DCOM timeout with the CLSID of IE but not each time I try)

- creating a new local account : can't start

- adding membership of domains administrators for one of my users -> can't start

How can I fix this problem

Any ideas ?

I'm not really happy to reformat my server just for that problem

Windows Server 2003 is not distributing purchased user CALS correctly

Hi All,

A client of ours has setup a terminal server for remote access to their line of business. The client realized after the grace period that he was not using the terminal server CALs he had purchased. 

Current TS setup:

* Domain/Workgroup: Workgroup

* Licensing: Per User

* CALS Type: Per User/ Retail Purchase

* Total, Available, Issued: 20, 20 and Not Applicable

* CAL details in TS Licensing:

* Issued To: Not Applicable

* Issued On: Not Applicable

* Expires On: Not Applicable

* Quantity: Not Applicable

The TSCTST.exe tool on the client machine states there is no license. License Server View tool shows that the Type is set to Domain and I suspect this maybe the issue but i cannot see where you specify a domain or workgroup when setting up TS licensing. 

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Connect RD Connection Broker to SQL

Hello I'm not being able to install RD Connection Broker with High Availability.

The RDS deployment consists on two servers running win2012

server1 - RDWA and RDG

server2 - RDSH and RDCB

The SQL server 2012 that I'm using is installed on server2 itself and had to be installed after the RDS otherwise the SQL installation failed and had to be done using the RD-install. It's working fine , I've applications that run on it.


As when configuring RDCB HA "both" RDCB hosts access directly to the SQL DB to create a new database, their accounts need to be authenticated as a SQL login with dbcreator role.

1 step: I checked a straight forward installation_

Installing and Configuring RD Connection Broker High Availability in Windows Server 2012

Failed

2 step: I checked an installation where my problem happened.

I checked RD Connection Broker HA – SQL Permissions
Added the host to a domain group and added the group as an SQL login, SQL authentication failed.

4 step: Google for how to create SQL login for a computer account and  I added it by executing:

“CREATE LOGIN [MyDomain\MyComputer$]FROM WINDOWS”

Also tried to use Add-ADcomputerServiceAccount without success.

3 step: I ended here

Taking a closer look at RD Connection Broker High Availability in Windows Server 2012

Where I verified that none of the following explanations were correct:

  • The SQL Server Native client is not installed
  • A firewall is blocking SQL Access from the RD Connection Broker (port 1433)
  • The incorrect SQL Server Native Client version is specified
  • An incorrect SQL Server name is specified



I tried several variations of the string to use but this is the one I think it's correct:

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=WIN2012-1;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDCB

The error registered on SQL is:

"Message
Login failed for user 'RDS\WIN2012-1$'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]"

I tried to connect via ODBC with an existing username an it succeeded.

The problem seems to be with the computer account not existing as an SQL login...the thing is that it exists.

I need to set this up in order to be able to change the RDCB FQDN to a public FQDN.

How were you guys able to overcome this? Did you faced this at all?

Hi,

I want to change "local virtual desktop creation location" for existing collection but this setting is grayed. This location is not exists anymore and I cannot add new VM's to collection.

If there is no way to do this if it possible to create new collection and move old VM's there?

RDS 2012 R2 - Allow Some Users Multiple Logon Sessions and Restrict Other Users to a Single Session

In Server 2012 R2 RDS, is there a way to allow some users to log on multiple times, but restrict other users to a single logon? On an OU or AD group basis?

I know there is a GPO setting under Computer Configuration for restricting users to a single logon, but this does not allow me to differentiate on a user basis (only on a per server basis).

Server 2012 R2 user profile disks and outlook search not working

Hi,

I`m having a problem with my setup for quite some time now with Windows Search and indexing the outlook OST files.

I`m using user profile disks in my setup but it seems that Windows Search can`t index the user profile disks, hence when i`m searching in outlook (the OST file is located in the user profile disk) with windows search enabled i`m not getting any results because it can`t index the OST file.

If I don`t use the disks then windows search works fine but because i`m using clustered TS servers I need the profile disks and I don`t want to go back to redirects if possible..

At the moment I`ve disabled Windows Search which forces outlook to search online, it works but is slow..

Session Id, Unified Session ID and session shadowing

Hi,

It looks like we've got a problem with session shadowing in our 2012R2 deployment. Trying to shadow a session from server manager returns an error "the session identification does not specify a valid session", but running a command "Mstsc.exe /v:RDS2012 /shadow:2 /noConsentPrompt" and using SessionID opens correct session without a problem. I noticed that there are two different ID's for each session, SessionID and UnifiedSessionID which are different. When I'm trying to shadow a Uinified one I'm receiving an error, but with SessionID it opens it. I can see that server manager is using UnifiedSessionID and that's why I can't open a shadowing session with GUI.

Is there a way to sort it out so we will be able to shadow a session from Server Manager?

2012 RDS + Gateway Certificate and and .local domains

Can someone verify this is the correct process to stop all certificate errors. 

RDS 2012 R2 deployment that is the following. 

1 server with broker web and gateway roles installed. 

3 session hosts. 

Domain is a .local

I want to stop all certificate errors. I have a certificate for the gateway/broker/web server gateway.xxx.com 

I have had a look at the Change published FQDN for Server 2012 or 2012 R2 RDS Deployment script

Do i just need to run this script on the gateway/broker/web server and will this stop the mismatch errors fro the session hosts?
