The license Server is the same box as the Session Host.

The Event 1130  on the 2012 server says to run the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool ?? That no longer exists.

Have removed and redeployed roles, with no help. Anbody have any Ideas?

Desktop Background on first logon

Hi,

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Farm and the users are configured to get a Aero Visual Style theme when they log on. The Theme is applied using a GPO "User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Personalization" and Loopback processing is set to "replace" via another GPO. We find that when a user logs on for the first time they get the standard "Windows 2008 R2" branded background but then get the correct black Themed background when they log on after that. Could anyone provide some insight on how this happens?

thanks.

Folder Redirection and script calling local variables

$

Hi all,

We are using Folder Redirection and Roaming Profiles in our environnement.

Roaming Profiles are stored in \\ShareServer\Roaming\%username%
Folder Redirection are redirected in \\ShareServer\FolderRedirection\%username%

(not the same directory).

It works, redirected folder and profiles are created, but, when we use a script using "%userprofile%" as variable everything will be written in the local profile and doesnt not appear in the user redirected folders.

For example if I use a script like "copy FILE.txt %userprofile%\Desktop\FILE.TXT" the FILE.txt will exist in C:\users\<my_user>\Desktop but will not appear on the desktop and will not be copied into the redirected folder.

I would like to change this behavior so everything will be in the redirected folders.

VDI and Multi-Tenantcy (Hosted)??

Just curious how others are doing it?

To my knowledge:

  1. Microsoft prohibits SPLA licensing for Windows 7. Each client has to buy a separate Windows 7 license and provide hosting provider with the license info. You cannot buy\resell“rent” the license nor buy on someone's behalf.
  2. Microsoft prohibits two customers from sharing the same server resources when accessing hosted virtual desktops; cloud providers must dedicate a server for each individual VDI customer. This means you need to have separate physical servers for EACH client.

To me it seems without significant investment in hardware and licensing, the answer is likely going to be terminal services on Server 2012 (skinned as Windows 7 or 8) and using InTune. I have to learn more about how this might work though and the pitfalls with end user experience especially with USB device redirection, multimedia, etc.

Does anyone know how companies like Desktone legally provides Windows 7 virtual desktops? Seems like there wouldn't be much of a profit margin after meeting all the compliance.

Hyper V 2012 Windows 8 Enterprise VDI RemoteFX video issue

I have setup my new Hyper V test box and have created multiple VM's with Win 8 pro without issue.  Most importantly I am testing remotefx and realized that I needed to use Win 8 Enterprise to get the physical GPU to be allocated to the VM.  Now that I am testing the Win 8 Enterprise with Remotefx I am getting random black screens or disconnects via rdp.  This only happens on Win 8 Enterprise. I have built 3 win 8 enterprise vm's from scratch to make sure I did not due somthing wrong in the build.  All systems are fully patched with the latest integration software too.

I am using a an NVIDIA Quatro 2000 with drive 9.18.13.1090 that I downloaded on Dec 31st.

Thank you

Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS Prinetr Redirection Issue

I donot have much knowledge about the RDS. I have a client who has two RDS servers. 3 Prinets are shared via Workspace. Whenever I am connecting to RDS server via RDP client my local prinetrs redirected sucessfully and I can see all redirected prinetrs on RDP session. But whenever I am going manually into the server (HOST) I didn't found any redirected prinetrs in the printer wizard ( If I am right whenever any user connect with RDP and if prineter redirection is enabled than a redirected printer must be created on host also) Please correct me if I am wrong?} If I am right then why I can see on redirected printer on RDP session but not HOST.

Hello!

I had configured custom RDP certificate as it is written in this post: (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2010/04/09/configuring-remote-desktop-certificates.aspx).

I used certificte template propagation via group policy editor in my AD domain.

Certificate configured to use "Server Authentication" Application Policy.

After session host computer applies new policy, when I try to connect to the server under Windows Server 2012, client throws "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again... or contact your administrator".

I tried to connect either from win2012 or win 7 clients and they are getting this same error.

All clients has installed RDP 8.0

on client EventViewer I see theese TerminalServices-ClientActiveXCore Information records:

Event ID 1026 - "RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 2308)"

Event ID 1105 - "The multi-transport connection has been disconnected."

Event ID 1026 - "RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 8199)"

Event ID 1105 - "The multi-transport connection has been disconnected."

on server System Log i see theese SChannel Erros:

Event ID 36888 - "A fatal error was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. the TLS protocol defined a fatal error code is 40. The Windows SChannel error state is 1205."

Event ID 36874 - "An  TLS 1.2 connection request was received from a remote client application, but none of the cipher suites supported by the client application are supported by server. the ssl connection request has failed."

Event ID 36888 - "A fatal error was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. the TLS protocol defined a fatal error code is 40. The Windows SChannel error state is 1205."

Windows 2008 R2 Remote desktop licensing problems

Hi, i have a server with remote desktop and remote desktop licensing installed and activated, and another server with remote desktop installed and pointing in the remote desktop session host configuration to the licensing server. If i do a Diagnostic informs that there are no problems:

Licensing diagnosis did not identify any licensing problems....

I see the number of license installed on the license server but if i try to connect to rdp i get a error with the following message:

The remote sessions was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license server available to provide a license.

Clarified that thefirewallis disabledon both servers.

Also, i have event id 1130:

Server 2008 R2 - User Permissions for Application Compatiblity Mode on TS

$

Hello,

I have an application (Acrobat 8) running on my 2008 R2 Terminal Servers that runs, but randomly throws fatal errors. As part of my troubleshooting, since it's an older app, I wanted to try running it in XPSP3 compatibility mode for all users to see if that helps at all.

I can set acrobat.exe to run in XPSP3 mode and it will run logged in as an Administrator, but when I log in as one of my TS users, I get UAC-style prompts that require authentication to run the program.

Running Process Monitor and attempting to run as a TS user gives me only two access denied errors for the TS user, on these files:

  • C:\Windows\Installer\<guid>\_SC_Distiller.exe
  • C:\Windows\Installer\<guid>\_SC_Acrobat_Standard.exe

Before I give TS users access to those files, I wanted to see if there were any special permissions that should be set anywhere just as a result of using application compatibility mode on a terminal server. The TS users are currently just members of the Users and Remote Desktop Users groups.

Thanks in advance,

John

IP Address Virtualization

$

I am currently building a farm of RDSH Computers running Windows 2008 R2.  Due to auditing requirements I need to have traceability for any web browsing conducted on these systems.  Our Web Filtering Service only logs and audits via the source IP address of the web request and therefore cannot differentiate between user sessions on the same computer by default.

I thought I could get arouind this by using IP Address Virtualization, but it isn't working as expected.  The Remote Desktop Session Host successfully allocates the Virtual IPs to each user session as expected (I have the pools configured statically within the registry of each RDSH as I cannot put a DHCP Server on the LAN the User Session are presented over).  However, when I check IE usage using TCPMon and our Web Filtering service, all traffic is using the statically-assigned IP Address of the User session NIC and not the assigned virtual IP.

OK, to help you all out and hopefully come to an answer, here's my configuration:

First and foremost, the RDSH are physical tin and I do not have any Teaming Software in use.

I have two interfaces on each RDSH: one for User Session connections and a back-end one onto the Data Centre LAN.

The Data Centre LAN has the DNS Server adresses added, but no Default Gateway and registers the host's DNS record.

The User Session Interface has the Default Gateway defined but no DNS servers, and it is this one that has IP Address Virtualization.

I'm using a Connection Broker and Load-balancing via DNS Round-Robin.

The network configuration is otherwise good and I'm getting excellent responses to all requests, considering I only have 1 Gb of network bandwidth to play with and I've load tested the system up to 100 connections so far.   I need the second interface as I will have to use App-V on the systems; we have a broad swathe of end-user applications, some of which cannot co-exist on the same Operating System installation and I don't want to go down the road of Departmental RDSH silos.

I've tried the latest NIC Driver (and then the previous one) from the manufacturer as suggested in several other posts, and followed various recommendations.  However, from what I can see on all the other posts, others appear to be getting the issue that a Virtual IP Address isn't being assigned.  I'm getting the address assigned, it's just that IE isn't using it.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get around this?

Sorry, I should have added that I'm using per-program IP Address Virtualization and not per-session as I have multiple NICs

VDI desktops creation halts when template is sysprepped with unattend.xml

$

Hi,

to set correct locale and activate desktop guest Windows before rollback snapshot, I issued an unattended sysprep file.

It basically has settings for all Windows welcome screens, key, and commands to use KMS and activate.

Sysprep itself runs correctly using this file. If I power up template then, it will do all the configurations and start working.

But when I create collection off it (I don't use unattend.xml at this step!), creation halts displaying "press ctrl-alt-del" on the VDI's console.

Logging in, out, rebooting didn't help. Desktop creation doesn't continue.

If I don't use sysprep file, then it works, but I get wrong system-wide locale for non-unicode programs for all desktops, which is not acceptable.

Can anyone please help!

Also, is there any unattended sysprep file on RDCB, which is used during desktop creation (where it is located)?

What settings are required by desktop creation service?

Thank you!

RDS Testing with Windows 8

I have a Windows 2008 R2 RDS environment and for some reason when I access the RD Web Access page on a Windows 8 box w/ IE10, when I log in all the icons for RemoteApps are blank.  The text for the RemoteApp is there and the RemoteApp works just fine, but the icon itself is just blank.  This is only on Windows 8 - Vista and Windows 7 machines display the same RD Web Access site just fine.  Any ideas?

Folder Redirection Failure with RDS

$

Have XenApp 6.5 running on 2008R2 RDS servers sitting in their own OU. One of the GPOs which is applied to this OU is for ‘Folder Redirection'. We are redirecting Application Data and My Documents back to their Home directory.

We are getting the following messages:

Source: Microsoft-Windows-Folder Redirection

Event Type: Error; Event ID: 502; Event Text: Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Music" to "\\Bbserver\home\lavin\My Documents\My Music". Redirection options=0x9001. The following error occurred: "Can not create folder "\\ Bbserver \home\lavin\My Documents\My Music"". Error details: "Access is denied. ".

Source: Microsoft-Windows-Folder Redirection

Event Type: Error; Event ID: 502; Event Text: Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "RoamingAppData" to "\\ Bbserver \home\lavin\Application Data". Redirection options=0x9001. The following error occurred: "Failed to copy files from "C:\Users\lavin\AppData\Roaming" to "\\ Bbserver \home\lavin\Application Data"". Error details: "This function is not supported on this system. ".

I have unchecked the option in the GPO settings to "Grant the user exclusive rights to Application Data” for the folder redirection, but continue to get these messages.

FYI - We are using a Mandatory profile on the Citrix servers.

(FYI - 2003 AD)

How should we be setting up folder redirection so it works?

 Thanks,

Howto configure RDS connection broker for non-virtualised personal desktops

$

Hi

I have an RD Session Host farm configured with a clustered connection broker.  This works fine, providing load-balanced RDS sessions (Terminal Server Sessions) to domain users.

I also have a number of domain bound physical hosts, running legacy applications. I would like to assign these physical machines as "personal desktops" to some specific users. I have setup another RDS host, made it a member of the connection broker cluster, and set its mode to "Virtual Machine Redirection".  How can i specify machines to redirect-to without using a Hyper-V server?

Since these are physical hosts they are not running on Hyper-V, nor can i virtualise them.

I have seen the account properties in AD for assigning the FQDN of a host to a user, but i do not know how to configure the RDS host for this purpose.

Any help would be appreciated.

NLB and RDS Server Farm

$

Setting up a Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services environment and I'm getting stuck on my server farm config.

RDC Broker is installed to a domain controller at 192.168.1.12

I have 3 RDSH servers I want to add to the farm using network load balancing.  All 3 have that role installed as well as the NLB feature and dual NICS, the individual host IP's are 192.168.1.31, 32, 33 corresponding to node1, 2, 3.

NLB is setup, all 3 nodes are added and converged.  I created a DNS A record for the cluster nlb.domain.local 192.168.1.40

On each cluster host I configured the TS farm as follows:

RD Connection Broker Settings:

Farm member

RD Connection Broker points to the DC above

Farm Name: TS-Farm...?

RD Connection Broker Properties window:

Settings listed above are on top....

Participate in Connection Broker Load-Balancing

Use IP address redirection

IP to use for redirection: Node1 192.168.1.31; Node2 192.168.1.32; Node3 192.168.1.33

My question, referenced above, what should I use as the farm IP address?  Do I create three A records for ts-farm.domain.local, using the addresses of 192.168.1.31-33?

Do I point a ts-farm DNS entry to nlb.domain.local which is .40 my cluster IP?

I think that covers it all....thanks in advance!

**Edit**

DNS round robin is not an option in this setup.  Thanks.

Migrate to Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Gateway?

$

Hi folks,

We had a Windows Server 2008 R2 server with the remote desktop gateway role installed. How can I migrate the RDG role to a Windows Server 2012 machine?

I did not come across any documentation on this specific operation. We tried exporting the policy and configuration settings, but the XML file was not accepted for import in the 2012 RDG. I tried massaging the XML since there were a few differences, but it still did not take. We didn't see a powershell cmdlet for export/import operations either.

What we wound up doing was to recreate each CAP and RAP rule by hand on the 2012 RDG. Was there a better way to handle this?

Thanks!
