RDP Issues

I'm new to RDP and setup a windows 2012 server.  I need to get this done this week for my client and I am having problems.  I was able to install all the RDP roles on it even though it's a DC.  The client can only afford one server.  I am able to goto my serveraddress/rdweb and login and run the remoteapp from the server itself.  However when I try this from a client I can login but when I try to run a remoteapp I get the error 'RemoteApp Disconnected'.  It does not give a detailed description on why this error is occuring.

Though I know microsoft doesn't allow a RDP on a DC I don't think that is the issue since I can do everything fine right on the server.  Does anyone have any advice?  I just started a support call from Microsoft so I can update here with that as well.

If I cannot do this with Windows Server 2012, can my User RDP licenses that are purchased be used on Windows Server 2008?  The licensing server is installed but I did not put the liceneses in yet since it said I had 120 days before I needed to do this.

RDS SSL Wildcard Cert?

I had a fairly basic question around SSL certificates and using a wild card.  RDS was fairly straight forward to setup but SSL certificates are always confusing so I wanted to ensure I set this up correctly.

We have 4 servers (Broker, Gateway, Host and Web) setup for RDS and we would like Single Sign On to work both internally and externally over the WAN. How does authentication work?  Will just a normal SSL certificate work? I readwe need to use a wild card SSL certificate?  Then add the names of each of the internal RDS servers and the external/WAN domain name to the certificate?  Or is the setup different?

Something like this?  Does the $200 dollar one work?

Server 2012 refusing RDP admin connection (no licensing)

Hello, I am trying to remote into Windows Server 2012, which I did for months, but am now getting this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license"

How can I fix this and why do I need a license server? I just want to log in to do administration, which doesn't require a CAL per below.

Do I have to acquire RDS CALs if I am only remotely administering Windows Server operating systems by using
Remote Desktop for Administration?

No. Up to two users may connect to the Windows Server operating system simultaneously to perform administrative
functions without needing any RDS CALs. Additional administrative users need the appropriate RDS CALs.

I am stuck right now. Any pointers please?

Thanks for any help.

Terminal Services Licensing error - unable to start

Hi everybody,

I installed the Terminal Services and Terminal Services Licensing into a new Server PC (Server 2008 R1 Standard Edition) to work in a small workgroup environment.

However, I'm unable to register for the 5CAL licence I purchased because Starting the Licensing Server is not possible due to Error 31. In the Eventlog there is a further error shown as follows:

Event 44 - Terminal Services Licensing - "The following general database error has occurred: Can't initialize ESE instance - error -583 Jet_errSectorSizeNotSupported., The physical sector size reported by the disk subsystem, is unsupported by ESE for a specific file type."

Would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help.

Winodsw Server 2003 R2 x64 SP2 with TS role enabled freezes time to time

Hi,

we experience a wierd behaviour on couple of our Terminal Server which are used to run NAVISION (running Windows Server 2003 x64 SP2).

They just hang and freeze: you can't connect to it using RDP, but you can view current connections using Terminal Services Manager (and even remotely connect to some sessions: sometimes it does connect, sometines don't.. But when it does you can't open Task Manager, but sometimes NAVISION does responding).

It happens at peak time during the day, when max number of users are connected, but also happens at night time, when only 10-15 users are working.

We are monitoring these servers using SCOM 2012, but no alert comes during that time.. Events with ID 21402 and 201403 are recurring during the freeze time under Operations Manager Log.

I would try to log more counters with PerfMon, but when servers hangs we do hard reset and all data are lost, because I can't stop performance data collection..

Any ideas what could be the cause of this behavior?

There are couple screens from SCOM performance view which I found intereting:

LogicalDisk C: - %\IdleTime

Memory - pages\sec:

Forwarding TCP port to RD Gateway server and SSL certificates

$

Does RD Gateway use the same TCP port as the RDSH server (3389)? I need to know so that i know what ports to forward to it.

Also, during the initial setup I used a self signed certificate. This means that the domain configured on the self signed certificate is "hostname.domain.local". How can I get this to work from the outside? We have a public domain.com, however when I get to the RD Gateway Manager and try to create another self signed certificate, it says to "Create a self-signed certificate matching the RD Gateway FQDN". It allows me to change the certificate name though.

Does it really have to match the FQDN or can I just change it to hostname.domain.com?

thanks

Remote Desktop Gateway behind a NAT firewall

I created a self signed certificate using the same name that clients will be using to connect from the outside. I installed that certificate on my home computer. I forwarded port 443 to the RDG server. I can ping the hostname from the outside just fine (the response from the NAT firewall is received). But when I try to connect, it errors as though the server itself were not even up.

RemoteFX Minimum GPU

I am working on setting up a lab environment to test RemoteFX using Windows Server 2008 R2. Since this is a lab and I will only have 1 or 2 VDI machines running, buying a full fledge GPU seems like a bit of overkill. Does anyone know if a standard add-on video card can be used to support RemoteFX, or do I need to get a GPU?

Terminal Server - Preventing session stealing

Hello.

I have a client with a peculiar TS enviroment:  they use Terminal Server (running in a W2K3 R2) as the main server, and all users access it via thin-clients or Linux stations with RDESKTOP. All of the users uses the same account for loggin into the TS.

Here's the problem: from time to time, some users steals the other's session, since it's the same login account.

Is there a way to prevent it? It's impossible for them to create a user per employee, because this change doesn't reflect their bussiness necessity.

Windows Server 2012 RDS with Older RDP Clients

I have a client who is using TS 2003. I think they are going to finally upgrade to a 2012 environment.  I am finalizing the design and realize that many of their thin clients are Win CE 6.0  devices (HP Thin Clients t5550).  I was looking at adding some additional clients to the quote.  Working with HP the docs on their t510 device states that Windows 2012 RDS requires Windows Embedded 2009 or 7, not CE 6.

Is this accurate, does Windows RDS 2012 not support CE 6.0 clients?

(Is anyone running Win CE 6.0 clients? with 2012?)

Remote Desktop to Windows 8 machine disconnects after login

I've been trying to remote into my Surface Pro Windows 8 machine from my work (Windows 7 enterprise) machine and it's been hit or miss.  I have been able to get in before.  But for some reason I can't get in anymore.

On my Windows 7 machine, I go to remote desktop, type in my Surface Pro's (Win 8) machine's name.  It prompts me for my password.  I type it in and log in.  I can see the desktop of the Surface Pro, but then I get disconnected.

I have gone into Device Manager and changed the power management setting for the network adapter so that the computer can't turn off the wireless adapter (Unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power").  When I did this a few days ago, I restarted the machine and it worked for the rest of the day.  The next day it stopped working.

I have changed the power options on the device to high performance so that it doesn't shut down the network adapter.

But the network adapter still seems to shut down after logging into the machine.  I say this because I can see on the lock screen of the Surface Pro that there is limited wireless connections (wireless bars with * above it) after I log in from my Win 7 machine.

I have tried changing the require Network level Authentication setting on the Win 8 machine and it doesn't make a difference.

Not sure what else I can do.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Dennis.

server 2012 RDS- User Session cannot be logged off or disconnected (shows as active)

$

I am running 2012 RDS. Occasionally a user session (no specific one user) will enter a state that cannot be disconnected or logged off. The session still shows as active in the connections list

I cannot kill the 'stuck' process for this user. I cannot log them off or disconnect them and they can no longer log on to an rd session.

No command line or powershell script will end their session or kill their 'stuck' process (in this case rdpshell)

The ONLY way i can resolve this issue is to reboot the server, not ideal!

I have tried just about every kill script out there and nothing works.

thx

In response to a security audit, I need to close RDP vulnerability "Remote Desktop Protocol - man in the middle attacks" on our windows 2003 SP2 servers currently running RDC 6.0.6001 , and therefore need to upgrade RDC to  6.1  to enable NLA (Network Layer Authentication ) All my efforts to upgrade RDC went unsuccessful . Can some one please help me to upgrade win 2003 RDP to version 6.1 ?

Terminal Service Printing Generic/Text Driver - Admin prints fine-Any other RPD connection gets blank paper

I have 4-5 Companies with Star Micronics SP500 Receipt Printers. using the generic/text driver. The administrator prints fine from the server. Correct text and length of paper for the receipt. Everyone else connecting to the server via RDP prints blank paper the length of the receipt. Even remoting in an administrator account via RDP gets blank paper.

OS's:64bit 2008R2 sp1, 32bit 2008 sp1, 2003R2 SP2, Windows12

I have gone through over 500,000 lines of print processes doing a compare between the administrator and the terminal logged in and cant find anything that does not match that would cause this.

RemoteApp TS web access blocked IP

Hello,

I'm running Server 2008 + Terminal Services.

Users connect to the TS Web Access page to access RemoteApp programs. This afternoon one particular user on a particular PC was unable to access the URL. If she switches to another machine or picks up a new IP address, then all is good.

Also, something has blocked the IP if her wireless card (she was also connected to our internal wireless via Radius.

Any suggestions? Where is here IP being blocked?

Remote Desktop Gateway : How to set local adresses range

$

Hi All,

I'm using RDS 2012 to share some applications.

I'm using a RD Gateway to let internet clients use the published applications.

Today i'm facing a problem that I want to share with the community, and i'm sure it's a good topic.

I want that only internet clients use the RDGateway server, so I decided to check the option "Bypass the Gateway for local addresses"

The question is how the mechanism detects that it's in a local range or in a internet range.

The problem comes after some users in a branch office (connected to the main office via MPLS, not internet) reported me some performance issues, after I checked I found that they are redirected via the gateway, it's not my aim, I want only internet clients to be redirected via the Gateway.

The solution is : Is there any configuration file in the RDS server where I can configure and let the RDS server now the range and the source addresses that I want to be considered as local ?
