Windows Server 2012 R2 - RD Session Hosts with two RD Web Access servers

$

Hello,

We have deployed 25 RD Session Hosts which are accessible via RD Web Access. We have at this moment one deployment server which is configured as RD Web Access and RD Connection Broker. For this special configuration we have one collection by server because each RD Session Host server has different functionalities.

To grant user accessibility during down times,  we would like to have two deployment servers (RD Web Access and RD Connection Broker) server "A" and server "B" with exact the same configuration.

I tried to configure this scenario, but I couldn't add the the same server to both deployment "A" and "B". When I add a previously assigned RD Session Host to the new deployment "B",  the RD server will be automatically disabled from "A".

Looking for a solution for this problem, I discovered a registry key entry on the RD Session Host located under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Terminal Server\ClusterSettings\SessionDirectoryLocation

The value of this key is the FQDN of the new deployment server "B" (RD Web Access and RD Connection Broker). If I switch this value to the old FQDN of the server "A", then the deployment "A" works again.

Is there any step that I'm missing or this configuration is not possible? How can I setup two RD Web Access servers?

How do I make the timezone settings saved for each different users? However using GPO is not working..

Hello,

I have a couple of requirements:

1. A user on Central Time needs to be able to adjust the timeclock in the System Tray.

2. The same user needs to have Outlook on the user's RDP session/profile use Central Time.

The situation information:

1. The terminal server is configured on Eastern TimeZone.

2. The terminal server is round-robin configured with 3 other Terminal severs together. All on the Eastern Time Zone.

What is happening:

1. When the user logs off, the time clock reverts back to Eastern Time Zone after the user has changed it.

How can we make this stick? We tried to apply a Group Policy setting to the OU of the terminal servers to Allow Timezone Redirection, but that does not work. There is no issue with the GP applying.

Anyone know how to fix this or work around it. Thank you in advance.

RDP Problems Windows Server 2012

We have a Windows Server 2012 that we are using as an application server. We have several dozen users that RDP into the server each day. Most of the users are outside partners that work with us and the rest are employees. The employees that remote into the server have their local printers redirected. The outside partner users do not redirect their printers when they remote into the server. We control printer redirection through Local Users and Groups on the Server. On the user accounts of employees, we have the 'Connect client printers at logon' option in the 'Environment' tab under 'Properties' enabled. For the non-employee users, we have that option disabled.

About once or twice a week, the server's RDP services will begin to degrade. What first happens is that employees that remote into the server will not have their printers redirected. After a while, all users will have trouble remoting into the server at all. When they try to remote in, their RDP screen will just stay black for a while before the client just closes. A server reboot is necessary to alleviate the problems.

I looked at the server's System logs in Event Viewer and saw error messages referring to some services timing out:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The following service has repeatedly stopped responding to service control requests:
Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector
Contact the service vendor or the system administrator about whether to disable this service until the problem is identified.

I checked the server's Print Management Console and saw that there were hundreds of terminal service ports in there. Most of the ports seemed to be for the local printers of the non-employee users that were logged in. I found it strange that the server is creating TS ports for printers that are not being redirected. I did some troubleshooting and discovered that if I remoted into the server with the option to redirect printers enabled on the Remote Desktop client, the server would create TS ports for my printers even if my user account on the server has that option disabled. Is this normal behavior?

In addition, I saw many inactive TS ports as well.

Troubleshooting I have done so far:

I deleted all third party printer drivers, third party print processors, third party print providers and third party port monitors.

Is it just me....

why do all the RDS servers regularly disappear from RDSM?  It's simple to resolve by adding them back into Server Manager > Manage > Add Servers.

Corrupted roaming RDS Profiles maybe?

Basic question - how to configure Remote Desktop Service on Windows Server 2012 R2

$

hello,

First of all I would say, I am absolutely beginner in Windows Server, and now I need to configure RD service.

So we have a small company, 3 peoples only, and we would like to have a possibility "working from home". As I read, Windows Server 2012 R2 has a feature named as "Remote Desktop" what we may use for it. We bought a Dell PowerEdge T20 server and Windows 2012 R2, everything is legal, no illegal program will planned to use :-)

After the OS installation, I made a search about how the Remote Desktop Service can be installed/configured. I have found few blogs, links describing this topic. So I started to follow the steps, but somewhere in the middle or almost at the end, I got an warning message when I click on the "Server Manager / Remote Desktop Services / Overview" in the Server Manager tool. The message is this:

"You are currently logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections"

Yes, we do not have Domain Controller, ect, we have only this server and that is all. I also have looked at the Microsoft page "Remote Desktop Services", but there the "Test Lab Guide: Remote Desktop Services Publishing" has more complicated network than we have. So there are stand alone DC, RDWA, RDSH servers. Does this mean, the RD service cannot be installed in a standalone server where NO domain is configured, but the "pure" WORKINGGROUP is used?

Please try help me.

thanks,

RDS 2012 R2 Farm SSO because of double login

Hey Guys,

My Setup
2 x Windows Server 2012 R2 with RDS. Both of them are in the same farm and on both is the broker installed in high availability mode.

My Problem
When the User is logging in to farmname.domain.ch he enters the password and normally it's fine. But if the broker is changing the terminalserver because the other one has less load, the have to enter the password again.

Solution with Problem
Configuring Single Sign-On (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5466.deploying-rd-session-host-servers-or-farms.aspx).
I Configured the part in the GPO. Then I should create a kerberos identity for the farmname, but there is also written that this is not supportet if the connection broker runs as a node in a failover cluster and that's my main problem..

Question
What ist the solution if my connection broker(s) run as a node in a failover cluster?

Please help me :-)
If you need some more information or you don't understand my english, just ask.

Thank you
Dominik

RDP protocol TLS1.1 Support

Hello, I have a question:

does RDP protocol supports TLS 1.1. I did find similar question for TLS 1.2:

SSO only works from web page

I have a simple setup of RDS. One system is the connection broker, web access, licensing and gateway. A few others work as session hosts.

On the deployment overview, tasks, edit deployment properties I can see my digicert wildcard certificate is installed for all server roles.

The clients have the GPO deployed to "allow delegating default credentials" to TERMSRV/gateway.domain.com.  When I open up the rdp client and type in gateway.domain.com; it does use my logged in credentials to establish an RDP session.

If I go through the web page and install the IE activeX plugin, SSO works.

When added as a remote desktop feed and launch an application, I get a blank prompt for user name and password.

I have recreated on Windows 10, and Windows 7 with the RD client 7.1; 8.0 and 8.1 updates.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

I currently have 2 RDS servers alive and kicking, one of them holds remoteapps collection and the other i'm trying to configure to provide the mentioned functionality.

Any help will be highly appreciated

2012 R2 RemoteApp - Basic Theme issue

Hi All

I refer to this article below, is there a fix from MS for this issue?

We are reviewing migration from Citrix to RemoteApp, but this is causing a reluctance in change.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/44f33bd6-aa45-48cb-b886-352330e3f47c/win2012-std-basic-theme-problem-?forum=winserver8gen

Hello,

Somehow Windows Basic Theme broken, hyperlinks are changed to yellow, I cant event read text on menus. Also RDP users have same problem when they connect. How can I fix it ?

I installed Desktop Experience, and with Aero theme its ok on administrator RDP , but other users on RDP have same problems.

I resolved this by following:

  • I've just tried this (thank you Saad)

Open %windir%\Resources. Change security properties of the "Themes" folder and give full control permission to your account. Enable inheritance to apply this setting for all sub folders, or, open "Themes" folder, and give full control permission to your account on file "basic.theme".

This first step will allow you to modify the "basic.theme" file

    - On "Themes" folder, right click "basic.theme" and click "open with". Choose Notepad.

    - Click on ctrl+f and search for "aerolite.msstyles". Once you find it, replace it by "aero.msstyles".

    - Save this. After that, go on control panel - personalization, apply a theme randomly, then reapply the Windows Basic theme.

This indeed worked for me, however somehow I think this isn't a true root cause resolution and am waiting for it to bite me later....

Many thanks

Remote Desktop Manager 2.7 with new Win 10 update issues

Since the new Windows 10 update, my Remote Desktop Connection Manager software is buggy. When running it on my external monitor (connected by USB adapter), the mouse does not show up visually, it is there, just cannot see it.  I move the RDCMAN to my Surface Pro 3 screen (primary) it works fine.  Also, since the Win 10 update, when I use RDCMAN to connect to a Windows 2012 R2 server, it is smaller than the screen with garbage in the black space -- main issue is that the mouse is about an inch off to the bottom right of where the visible mouse actually is.  I have downloaded MultiDesk and it works just fine on all my monitors and with 2008 and 2012 server without issue.  Any ideas?  Or does Win 10 break the RDCMAN 2.7?

Losing connection to RDS server when working at home and at the office

Good day,

Some users are sometimes losing their RDP connection after mere minutes, even when the connection has been re-established

The network speeds of a user at home are:

-30 Mbps Down
-39 Mbps Up

We have a policy saying that 'we don't support people that work at home' but it still makes me curious since the problem persists when people are working at the office.

Thanks in regard!

Public Desktop Icons Keep Disappearing

I have a Server 2012 running for Terminal Session usage. About a week ago my users are experiencing the Desktop Shortcuts that I put in "C:\Users\Public\Desktop" are disappearing. I have rebooted the server many times, as well as fixed some other errors from the event log. One error that keeps coming up is Event 20499, TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager. I have no idea why these shortcuts keep disappearing and why this Event error keeps coming up. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix this?

Partial printer mapping

Hi.

We have large RDS farm on Win 2012 R2, clients connect via RDP and map their local printers as default printer. Periodically happens next:

Client connects to Remote Desktop, but redirected printer isn't listed in Device and Printer window and in standard Print dialog (there is no default printer at all). Despite this, some applications can print on default (redirected) printer, but some not.

Has somebody faced with the same issue and fix it?

DNS Cache Error

$

Hello everyone, I am in dire need of some help as i have searched high and low for a answer but to no avail.

To begin let me give you a idea of what I have setup and the goal I am trying to achieve. I currently have 4 Windows 2012 servers that will be used in a Remote Desktop Collection.

RDGateway
ServerTS4
ServerTS5
ServerTS6

ts 4 5 and 6 will be used as host servers while the RDGateway will be used for all the needed rolls connection broker licencing server etc.

We have a farm name lets call it Acme, my end goal is for the users to open up remote desktop connection type in Acme and connect to 4 5 or 6. Now i have created the DNS entries as needed all the times on the servers are correct. I have also changed the Security type to RDP security layer. Here is the kicker when i have the box checked saying "allow connections only from computers running remote desktop with network level auth" i get this error while connecting to Acme. "The connection cannot be completed because the remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified. This could be caused by an outdated entry in the DNS cache. Try using the IP address of the computer instead of the name." but when i uncheck that box it does not authenticate them before connecting to the server it connects them to the server then they enter there username and pass.

I know that was slightly log winded but i am willing to accept any help or ideas. If you have any questions please feel free to reply with those as well.
