RDS shared printer best practice

$

Hi all,

We are experiencing printer spooler crashes, printers randomly disappearing and not working.

We have a 2012 R2 TS for approximately 30 users on an internal domain network.

Printers are deployed via print management which pushes out shared printers that are installed on our DC.

Is this the correct way to install printers on the terminal server or is there a better way?

3rd Party Load Balancer with Windows 2012 R2 RDS

We have a small farm of 3 RDS servers and one separate RDCB server using Windows 2012 R2. We have decided not to use the RDCB server to handle to load balancing due to limitations and complexity, but instead work with a 3rd party load balancer(Snapt) that is agentless.

When someone first logs onto an RDS server, session is balanced across the farm appropriately. Things change though when a session becomes disconnected and the user wants to re-logon. At this point the user enters their credentials for the RDS session, the RDP screen goes black and then the logon screen appears again. I believe this is due to the second RDP session hitting a different server, CB realizing an active session exists on a different server, and moving the user to the appropriate server.

I believe the issue lies in our load balancer and not the connection broker but I wanted to see if I could get some feedback on this as my team and I might be missing something entirely.

Thanks,

Joe

Load Balance RDWEB

As subject, I'm struggling to establish whether load balancing RDWeb is possible in 2012R2 without using a 3rd party app such as Kemp. I understand that, due to changes in the HTTPS streams, it's not possible with to load balance RDS Gateway using a round-robin, but what about RDWeb?

Thanks in advance...

Is there to grant a standard user privilege to view the running processes of other users in Task Manager (Server 2012 R2 Terminal Servers)

Hi Everyone,

I'm one of the help desk guys in our company and we're trying to figure out how we can give a standard user to view the process of other users via task manager. We're using Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminal Hosts. Reason why we need this is because we've been getting very high CPU usage from some users in the terminal servers and it slows down everyone. We'd like to grant some members of the help desk team access to view the processes without giving them admin accounts to the server. With this, the team can analyze what process consumes the most CPU.

Thanks is advance.

Exchange 2013 authentication issues for users of RDS server

$

We have a customer that uses thin clients and multiple RDS servers for the majority of their users. They use a software application that contains a feature which will open a new email message window from within Outlook to simplify the process of sending an email when needed in their workflow.  When the customer was running Exchange 2010, this feature worked correctly, but after upgrading to Exchange 2013, the new email message window does not open in Outlook when prompted from the other application. Instead, the user is prompted by Outlook to enter their credentials.  Whether the user cancels the prompt or enters their credentials correctly, authentication fails and they are immediately prompted for credentials again, over and over.

We have ruled out anything specific with the third-party application.  We know it works fine with other customers on Exchange 2013 (and other customers using RDS servers) and for the users at our customer site that have full PCs that are not using the RDS servers. Only the RDS users at this customer site face this issue.  We also known the same issue occurs if the RDS users click any "MAILTO" hyperlinks or shortcuts, thus eliminating the third-party application from the equation.

The customer is running 4 RDS servers (WS 2008 R2) and a separate Exchange 2013 mail server within their network.  The users have Personal Desktop VDIs running Windows 7 with Outlook 2010 in "online" mode (it is worth mentioning that the same credential prompt behavior occurs in "cached" mode as well, but the email message windowwill open after credentials are successfully entered). When running a network trace, we see that there are a number of HTTP 401 errors with authentication going to the Exchange server (this occurs if authentication is set to "Basic", "NTLM" or "negotiate").  Again, this was not an issue while on Exchange 2010 and non-RDS users do not have this issue while now on Exchange 2013.

Perhaps the issue is with the user profiles in the RDS environment (registry values for Exchange/Outlook need to be updated somehow)?  Perhaps the RDS sessions cannot communicate properly with Exchange since 2013 switched to using RPC over HTTPS?  Perhaps the RDS user logins are not set properly for the correct mail profile to be identified/assigned/authorized? We are trying to advise the customer where the issue lies, and could use some advice.

Temp profile issues

Hey Guys

We have a client that has the following setup (all Windows Server 2012 R2 Machines in a virtualized environment, using UPD's)

Rd Broker

TS1, TS2, TS3

The issue we are having is that when <g class="gr_ gr_617 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="617" id="617">a user signs</g> in but once their done doesn't sign out or their session is in a disconnected state, when they log back in and the broker sends them to a different TS, it logs them on with a temporary profile.

Any ideas what could be causing this as there are GPO settings set for restricting them to a single session.

Thanks

Problem with connect to RDS2012R2 from external network without gateway role.

Hello everybody!

I have some problem with my terminal farm based on rds2012r2 but WITHOUT gateway role.
My environment is described below:
All servers are virtual machines on vmware.
- AD DC - test-ad-01 - 192.168.2.241
- Broker - test-br-01 - 192.168.2.242
- Session Host - test-rdsh-01 - 192.168.2.243

Also below I described rules for port forwarding:
ext.ip:3387 - 192.168.2.242:3389
ext.ip:3389 - 192.168.2.243

And I modifyed the RDP file for change port for brocker:
full address:s:TEST-BR-01.TEST.LOCAL:3387

So, when users connecting from internal network all is OK. But when I try to connect from external network it don't work.
Server with broker role has this record in Event Viewer:

RD Connection Broker successfully processed the connection request for user TEST\user. Redirection info:
Target Name = TEST-RDSH-01
Target IP Address = 192.168.2.243
Target Netbios = TEST-RDSH-01
Target FQDN = test-rdsh-01.test.local
Disconnected Session Found = 0x1

Can I change the Target IP Address to external IP, because I think it will solve my problem.

TP can you help? Very slow configuring session on server 2012 RDS environment

Hello,

I have come across several posts with a member "TP" was able to help resolve very similar issues.

Hoping he is still around and able to help me. I was not able to find a way to message directly on here.

So we have a 2012 RDS environment, the DC is also server 2012.

When users double click the RDP icon it takes almost almost a minute to connect.

It gets stuck at "configuring remote session"

I think its related to either the FQDN, DNS or certificate but we have had 3 people internally look at this and we just cannot figure it out. It was working fine when we intially set the servers up and worked for about 6 months, then last month, just out of the blue it started doing this.

Hoping someone will be able to assist

TP if you are here and able to assist we would be so very grateful to you!

Thanks!

Remote Desktop programs running slow .....running windows server 2008

Background:
Host has Server with Windows 2008 Standard and VMware Virtual Platform.
RAM:32 Gb, Processor: 4X5670 @2.93gHZ [4 processors]

Task Manager : CPU utilization is minimal to normal.

5 to 10 Clients on Windows desktop and uses RDP using IPSEC VPN to connect to Host and works on Microsoft tool like word, Visio, PowerPoint.

RDP shell version : 6.1.7601

Problems:
All clients are able to connect to the remote server and seems fine when they move their cursor or open weblinks, but when they use RemoteApps, when connected to the remote programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Visio 2013, etc..it takes ages for one to edit on the page or even to type a letter.

All the Clients are on their individual systems with 4GB RAM and WAN of 12Mbps to 16Mbps Internet connectivity.

What could be the possible reasons? and where [at client end or host end]?

What is the solution to it?

When I run the commands while logged in I get the results immediately. This is not in a "run as administrator" session. This is a newish 2012 R2 install.

Here is from opening PS right from the desktop:

====

PS U:\> hostname

PS U:\> Import-Module remotedesktop

PS U:\> Get-RDServer -ConnectionBroker rdcb002.ads.local
Server                                             Roles

[rdcb001.ads.local]: PS C:\Users\admin.curtis\Documents> import-module remotedesktop

[rdcb001.ads.local]: PS C:\Users\admin.curtis\Documents> Get-RDServer -ConnectionBroker rdcb002.ads.local

I only have 2 broker servers, and it does the same regardless of the -connectionbroker value (the example here is after making sure that the active broker is this server)

I get the same error when running this from orchestrator as a "run a command" with powershell -file c:\script\blah.ps1

File Association issue

I am using Microsoft Dynamics AX as a Remote App, the file association used with the Dynamics client is .axc.
I have added a folder as an icon in TS Web Access which contains numerous .axc file for access to different AX environments.

The problem I have is that these AXC files do not show any association with a program when the folder is opened through TS Web Access. If I create the file association then it works fine. Yet when someone else logs in the file assocation is gone again for them. It's almost like its individual to profiles, but I didn't think this was supposed to be the case with file extensions?

When I log onto the server locally the file assocation is correct. Is there something in the registry that wipes this association for new users? Once the file association is made for a user, it stays. Problem is we restrict the programs users can run using GP and they are unable to run the 'Open With...' wizard, rightly so.

I have checked the file extension into the registry in HKCR\.axc and everything seems in order.

Any suggestions?

Client Licenses

Hi!

We have two kind of licenses in our Windows 2008 Terminal Server. Device and User licenses. Our users are facing problem with connecting to the server and getting a message that says "There is no client access license available for this computer". Then we have to delete mslicence registry key to connect again.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks.

RDS 2012 R2 - RDWeb via SSL VPN Portal

$

Hiya,

For various reasons we are deploying RDS 2012R2 via our shiny new SSL VPN portal provided by our Firewall, the firewall proxys and obscures the address of any URLs that are opened through it.

As a result when you try and browse to the rdweb url you get an error message in IE:

The XML page cannot be displayed. Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet.....

If i do the same with Chrome it partially loads but spits out errors in the Developer Tools:

"Unsafe attempt to load URL https://InternalServerHostname.domain.com/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/RDWAStrings.xml from frame with URL https://sslVPNURL.domain.com/proxy/https/obscuredURL/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/login.aspx?ReturnURL=/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/Default.aspx Domains, protocols and ports must match"

So from doing research it does seem that issue is down to trying to load the XSL sheet from a URL that is different from the URL open in the browser - looking at it, it appears that the XSL performs a look up of the local host URL and uses that to then provide the html headers etc. that includes href="https://InternalServerHostname.domain.com/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/"

Has anyone encountered this before and if so how did you get round it (yes I am aware of the RD Gateway, we are trying to avoid using that if possible as our Firewall provides excellent logging that we can't get from the gateway). In my mind it involves modifying the XSL or aspx files so that either the XSL is embedded in the same file, or that the URLs are all set to relative not something based on a lookup. I know relative works as our intranet loads fine and all of the href's are relative.

Thoughts on postcards, and try to avoid mocking the use of an SSL VPN portal over the Gateway please.... :)

Create folders in Web Access page for RDSH Sessions and VDIs

Hello all,

I’ve built a RDS 2012 R2 lab with all possible roles and sorted out more or less every problem I had except one.

It looks like a trivial question which makes me think that I missed something obvious but…

I was looking for a way to create folders in the web interface for RDSH Sessions (Not apps) and for the published VDIs.

I’ve found how to do it with remote apps but that’s all.

Can someone give me the trick for the rest?

Thank you for your help

Hello, I have central domain with Terminal server 2012 for users from local domain and few trusted domain. All works many months, but last ten days users from one trusted domain not logon. Error is: "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship." Some times help restart domain controler with trusted domain, delete and renew trust and restart Terminal server.. after few minut users logon. But not all times.. Today this practise not work. I test logon user from trusted domain to local computer and he is loged. Trust works.. problem is only with logon terminal server.. Licensing server is OK, time is same on all computers, ping to IP or FQDN works too..

Printers of other users visible and show up multiple times under the control panel

Hello,

I currently have a very interesting problem:

Some (not all) printers show up multiple times on every user session on the specific terminal server. This behavior show up on both of the 2 servers. Also the printer only shows up multiple times under the control panel, but not in the printer dialog.

The users are not part of either printer operators, Administrator or Power Users.

The servers are Windows Server 2012.

I cannot find a reason for this after some hours with my friend Google.

Does someone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Server Manager will not display my farm

$

I have (4) 2012 RDS servers split into 2 session collections with both being managed by the same connection broker/gateway. One farm is "remote desktops" and the other is "remote applciations" (We have some users that use "Dumb terminals" so they get the desktops, and other users who use win7 and 10 and they use the "apps".

Everything worked great until yesterday morning.  Server Manager on my Connection Broker/Gateway server no longer will show my collections.  Only gives me the following on the Overview:

"A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist int he server pool.

To create a deployment, run the Add Roles and Features Wizard and select the Remote Desktop Services installation option."

My deployment still works however as users can log in and work as normal.  I just can't manage it.  Trying to create a new deployment errors out as well with "Could not retrieve the deployment information from the RD Connection Broker server.

Any ideas?
