Error: Could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for XXXX

$

I have a master disk image. I used a copy of it on a Server 2012R2 host to create a personal virtual desktop collection. It worked as expected.

I used a copy of the same VHDX to build another template VM (with slightly more memory, and extra CPUs).

No mater what I do, when I create the new collection from the second template, I get the not very helpful error: "could not retrieve the virtual desktop template details for XXXX".

Could this be a permission thing? Since I used a copy of the same VHDX to build another template, and it's working, I know it's been sysprep'ed properly.

Any suggestions? Are there any logs that I could look at?

Time Zone Redirection not working

Hi all!,

We are having a problem with the time zone redirection, we have a customers that are on different time zone than us and they are using a remote app system that's hosted on our server, whenever they use the program it should be saving data using their local time but it's using the same time as the server, we want to enable Allow Time Zone Redirection both on the server they are connecting to and on their local computers, but before we do that, we are trying to test it out on our side by changing the time on one computer and remoting to the server we have enabled the Time Zone redirection. this seems not to work, my question is can we be able to test this out on the local network, and if so how do we test it out?

Disable Dynamic DPI Scaling

$

I have some older applications being distributed via RemoteApp that don't handle DPI scaling very well, while it isn't terrible, they appear somewhat fuzzy and it tends to drive the users crazy. I know that RDP 8.1 will scale the RemoteApps according to the users DPI settings on the connecting machine, however all the user machines are set to 100% (no scaling) and the resolutions actually aren't that high.

Is there a way to disable some of the new RDP 8.1 display optimizations via the server side so I can get the app to look normal? The app looks just fine when loaded directly on the user machine and is only fuzzy over RDP.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Change published FQDN for Server 2012 R2 RDS Deployment

I am having issues running the cmdlet provided by Microsoft and I am unable to change the external FQDN so it matches my wild certificate.

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80

I am running a single server  environment. It used to be so easy to redirect on Windows 2008 Server but I can't figure it out what I am doing wrong on this new server.

I appreciate all of your help

How do I change the URL to the Remote Web Access server in Windows Server 2012?

$

Hallo!

I have set up a Remote Dexktop Service using the "Quick" deployment method in Server Manager and everything is working greate internally, but I cannot start an app published in Remote Web Access from outside our network.

The problem is that it wants to start the using the internal URL, for example, server.domain.local, instead of the external one, for example remote.server.com.

I therefore want to know how I can change the default URL for the Remote Web Access server and all the Remote Web Apps in Windows Server 2012?

I have allready looked in Server Manager and I can change some of the deployment settings in server manager, but there is no way to alter the URL of the Remote Web Access server. See below images:

Edit deployment step 1

Edit deployment step 2 try to change the url

Pressing the internal URL only results in opening the internal URL.

This was very simple to do in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the tsconfig tool, but it does not seam to be any way of solving this in server manager.

A possible sollution would be to alter the registry someware in HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Terminal Services. But this can easaly lead to problems due to wrong format, etc. and is probably not supported.

Is there a simpler and supported way?

Strange issue with RDS disconnected session

$

Hello,

We are having a strange issue with RDS when a client tries to reconnect to a disconnected session. The issue only happens when the user is going through our SSL VPN (Pulse Secure). This does not happen when the user is internal. If there are no active sessions for the user, they can connect to the farm with no problems, if they close out of the application and the session goes to a disconnect, when they try and reconnect they get the following error message. " Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to the remote computer. The remote computer "Farmname" that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to another remote computer named "Computername". Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify that the computers belong to the sam RD Session Host server farm. You must use the farm name, not the computer name, when you connect to an RD Session Host server farm."

If I manually log off the user, and they try the connection again, it connects with no problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this error?

RDS is running on Server 2012

Thanks,

Gavin

RDP into Black Screen then Disconnects 2012 R2

$

I have several servers that the last few weeks all randomnly have started causing connections via RDP to go to black screen for about 10-15 seconds then close the session.

I have checked roll up updates such as KB2887595 are installed, I can console into them from my VM Console, however RDP does not let me in unless a full Reboot occurs, sometimes multiple times.  The fix may be temporary for a few hours, but may quickly revert back from not allowing new connections to log in.

These servers are part of a collection farm, I have disconnect sessions set to 1 minute, idle set to 15 min, active set to never for the connection properties for these farms.

I am at my wits end, cause I have roughly 6-8 servers all behaiving the same way with roughly 600 users hitting this set of servers on a daily basis, this is overflowing my help desk guys and I need a fix or solution...like last week.

Please help!

2012 R2 Server with Roaming Profiles - Some Systems Fail to Find or synchronize Roaming Profile

I have a roaming profile on a Windows 2012 R2 Active Directory Server.

When I Remote Desktop into some systems (ie Hypervisor1 - 2012 Physical Box) I get an Application User Profile Service event ID 1511 message:

  • Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

When I Remote Desktop into other systems (ie management - 2012 virtual box) everything works fine.

On yet other systems when I Remote Desktop (or connect via Hyper-V console) I get an event ID 1540 message:

  • Your roaming profile is not synchronized correctly with the server. Windows will load your previously-saved local profile instead. See the previous events for details.

I tried this procedure which is loosely related with no success:

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Unable to see Server 2012 RDS Collections created by different admin.

I setup RDS on Windows Server 2012 Standard x64 in a VM and created a collection and published several remote apps. When a colleague logs into the server, he can see that Remote Desktop Services is configured but he cannot see the attached servers, the collections or any remote apps.  He is also a Domain Admin and has the same domain credentials as myself.

Anyone have any ideas?

Random Slow Logon in RDP (hangs at Applying Personal Settings)

$

The settings:

Windows 2003 R2 DCs (DNS are OK)

Windows 2003 R2 x64 Servers (DNS are OK) [HP Blade servers]

-> TSE servers for plenty of users (60/100 in same times)

Windows XP SP3 & Windows 7 SP1 (DNS are OK)

The problem:

Sometimes, during TSE connection on the W2K3 servers, logon becomes very long (1-5min), hungs on Applying Personal Settings

After a reboot on the W2K3 server, everything goes OK.

The problem is only on TSE servers but not onto other servers like DCs or DHCP...

Checks:

I've already checked:

DNS -> OK

GPO -> seems to be OK

No roaming profiles

Thx for your help

I've already checked plenty of topics on that forum and no one resolved our issue.

Server 2012 RDS WinLogon process crashing Event ID 4005 Black Screen

$

We have this issue on many 2012 RDS session hosts. The issue has been seen at different clients with different set ups, some have a simple 1 session host RDS server, some have 4 or 5 session hosts in a load balanced farm with RD gateway, connection brokers, RDWeb, ect. The problem in simplest explanation:

A user will call the help desk saying they cannot access the server. They will get an error when RDP is trying to connect.

We check the session hosts, and will find many errors:

"Event ID 4005 - The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

At that point in time, users who are currently logged in may be able to still work, or their session may lock up (it is not consistent).

Regardless of the current users logged; after the logon process crashes, it continues to crash upon every user attempt to log on. It will happen indefinitely until the server is rebooted. We can not log in, not even via console until the server is rebooted.

Then, everything works fine for some amount of time (not consistent) it may be a couple of days, or it may be weeks, or a month even.

We have had the case open with Microsoft for about two months and they cannot determine what is wrong.

I believe I may have found a possible cause; Webroot Secure Anywhere antivirus. Since we have tried everything from moving from roaming profiles to local profiles, removing all printers, blocking inheritance of GP, fresh server builds with minimal software, ect - it has to be something that is consistent across the board on all servers.

The only thing I can find consistent across the board is the Antivirus; Webroot.

I am curious if anyone else is having this issue? I would like to pin point this to something but it is so intermittent and we cannot force replicate the problem.

Win CE 6.1 device no longer able to login to Server 2016 RDS

I can no longer connect through the handheld, after I activated RDS CALs. It worked fine when it was in "trial" mode, prior to activation.

I have tried reducing security levels and disabling NLA. I can login to Server 2016 RDS from a different desktop using the same user account.

Dear all,

I have two servers (Windows Server 2012), I need to setup passwordless connections between them.  I downloaded Cygwin and Putty to generate authorized_keys and private keys, but I am still unable to connect to either one using this ssh setup.

Can anyone share his/her experience on how to setup passwordless connections between two Windows servers?

Thanks,

RDS 2012 R2 + User Profile Disks - corrupt ntuser.dat after RDS Host crashes

$

I have an RDS 2012 R2 Session host collection set up with a connection broker and with UPD's running off a share with Server 2008 R2. All worked great.. until one of the Session Hosts crashed/blue screened and dumped the users.

When the users reconnected from the server that crashed, they all logged in with temporary profiles.  After a bunch of testing and troubleshooting I found that the ntuser.dat file in their UPD's became corrupt.  We have 1 Session host that seems to have an issue with occasional blue screening and it's causing a significant pain to consistently have to re-create the user profile disks of the users that were logged in if a session host is powered down abruptly.

I really like the feature, but I'm starting to look at alternatives.  The content in the profile disks isn't super critical, it's primarily shortcuts and program settings but it's annoying for users when they reset.

anyone else seeing similar issues?  any suggestions to dealing with it? (i'm trying to avoid doing regular backups of a "convenience feature").

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server.  Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Publish RDS through WAP/ADFS 4.0 in Windows Server 2016 with SSO?

$

Hi!

Is it possible to enable SSO with Remote Desktop Services through WAP/ADFS 4.0 with Windows Server 2016? According to earlier forum posts this would possible be included in Windows Server 2016.

Ive configured my setup according to the following guide for pre-authentication with ADFS and published through a WAP.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/identity/web-application-proxy/publishing-applications-with-sharepoint%2c-exchange-and-rdg

The problem with this setup for me is that the users are required to login, once again, when the user is redirected to RDWeb. E.g. the TSWAuthClientSideCookie isnt created without the javascript after the second login in the RDWeb.

The goal is that users only should have to login at the ADFS signin page for SSO. How should I configure the WAP/ADFS/RDS?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Stay logged in, keep the desktop running

On my server running Windows Server 2012 R2, I need to run a program 24/7 that identifies colors on the screen and moves the mouse to click. Currently, it only works when I'm connected through remote desktop, then it seems to pause until I connect again. I'm trying to see if there is a way for me to make the desktop keep 'rendering' what is on the screen even if I'm not connected.

What I've tried so far: Local Group Policy Editor: Set Time limit for Disconnected sessions - Never Log off - Never

Changing Permissions Using The Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration

$

Hello

I'm using RDS Server 2012 R2 with users needing access to their local resources when connected to a remoteapp. To be able to do this I'm assuming it's still the same as 2008, whereby one needs to grant the Virtual Channels (full access) permissions using Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration.

As this tool as now been removed, and I'm just going round in circles, can someone please tell me what this tool is now called and where you download it from, or, some step-by-step instruction of how you now change the permissions in the latest version?

Many thanks.

DC.
