RemoteApp Default Printer Redirection Not Working in Server 2016

$

We are experiencing a RemoteApp default printer redirection issue in Windows Server 2016 that we are not seeing in Windows Server 2012R2.   We have the following simple environment:

  1.       Windows Server 2012R2 with RDS Quick Start installed.
  2.       Windows Server 2016 with RDS Quick Start installed (configured identically)
  3.       Window 10 Client with attached HP printer configured as “Default” printer.

When we launch WordPad as a RemoteApp on the client (via RDWeb) and try to print a document, we see different behaviors: 1) When launched on Server 2012R2, the client’s default printer (HP printer) is shown as the default printer (expected behavior), 2) When launched on Server 2016, the server’s default printer (XPS Document) is shown as the default printer (unexpected behavior).

We’ve verified that all of the Group policies and connection settings are correct and identical between the two servers.  However we noticed the values ofHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Device keys are different:  2012R shows redirection to client printer, 2016 shows server printer.

Is this a bug in Server 2016?  Anything else we should check or configure?

Thanks,

cyorlano

Server 2008r2 VM on Server 2012r2 Hyper-V

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a Server 2008r2 VM running on server 2012r2 Hyper-V to see the Nvida Grid K2 Graphics Video Card.

When I run the Nvidia installer, I get an error that says NVIDIA Installer cannot continue, This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

On the host server, I have installed the K2 drivers and the host server sees it just fine. I have the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host role service installed and I've set the GPU setting in hyper-v to use the GPU. On the VM, under device manager under "other devices" there's a device that doesn't have drivers.

what am I missing?

Thanks in advance

Desktop missing from Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Server 2012R2

Hi All,

I created an earlier post related to this issue but while investigating I am pretty sure the problem is much different than previously described.

A few weeks ago we published an app on our RDS server, a short time late users began reporting that that the "Desktop" (Remote Desktop) icon disappeared from the RDS web portal. We have combed all logs and found nothing that would indicate what happened to this functionality and also applied all available updates and rebooted several times since this issue. Also, am pretty sure no admins had logged into this server for months prior to this so it is doubtful any changes were made.

Since our RDS engineer recently departed I am sort of stuck on this problem and learning as I go. Initially I thought it was a MSTSC published app that disappeared and have been troubleshooting from that angle by also publishing and RDP icon to the portal which has got users back to work but has presented some limitations and other problems (redirection of printers and drives). If I now understand RDS correctly, the Desktop is a core functionality included in the RDS deployment immediately after building the first collection and before publishing any application, if I am wrong here please correct me (would also appreciate confirmation of this theory).

Been working this issue for about five days now, would appreciate any assistance from others who have had same problem.

cannot print from terminal server to local

Server: Windows Server 2003 SP2

Local: Windows 7

Printer: Okiedata 320_1 Turbo w/USB

This week we replaced a local Windows 2000/ME computer with a new 64bit W7 box. I'm having a bit of trouble getting the Terminal computer to print to the local computer. I _can_ print locally. I did get one successful test print from the terminal server to the local using Wordpad, but I have been unable to replicate that success since trying to print from our accounting software (MAS200).... this inability to print also includes printing from the terminal server to the local with notepad/wordpad. I can still print locally, though - that has stayed constant after its own initial hurdles.

The local port is USB001 Virtual Printer Port. The terminal port does not seem to want to stay active after i reconnect, but generally i am trying some derivitive of TS### | local computer description PRN#....

I really dont want to have subject these poor people to the 2000/ME box until we can replace the server sometime early next year....

Copy all of "My Desktops" to another Mac with Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9

I have almost 1,000 entry under  "My Desktops" in Microsoft Remote Desktop v8.0.9 and I'm looking for a quick way to transfer all of them to another Mac.

I thought I could just copy the .plist file at:

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.rdc.mac.plist

to my new computer and I'd be good to go but that's not working.

I also found the

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.rdc.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Remote Desktop

folder and copied that as well (tho the folders here look to be empty, I see the folder names match entries in the .plist). Yet, "My Desktops" is empty.

I also noticed when I copy the .plist over to the new laptop it's 946 KB in size. I run the RDP client on the new computer and the .plist file size drops down to 10 KB in size.

I really do not want to export all 1,000 entries and copy those files over to the new computer. I've found that the exported files when run require you to enter the username/password verse automatically getting it from (I assume) the keychain.

Is there anyway to copy all my RDP hosts from 1 Mac to another Mac?

Thanks.

accounts lock and require password resets

We are seeing more frequently people getting locked out of their accounts and not being able to log in even after waiting.

Account lockout is 5 tries, wait 5 minutes, can log in again.

For some users even this does not work, I have to unlock the account on a domain controller, and sometimes even this does not work and I must reset the password.

Why does this happen?? How do I fix or prevent this??

Only thing I learned of so far is to lower the replication time from 180 minutes to 60 minutes in AD Sites and Services (IP Inter-Site Transport).

Thank you, Tom

SSMS over RDP twice as slow as console session

$

Hi,

I have two servers, a terminal server and a database server. Whenever I log into the terminal server or database server from the Hyper-V console and run a test query from SSMS it takes about 19 seconds. However, whenever I RDP into the terminal server, that same query will take about 45 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas? VM Queueing is off on all nics, both VM's are sharing the same NIC on an external virtual switch that's on the default vlan.

Both servers are Server 2008 R2, the Hyper-V server is Windows 2012 R2.

Thanks,
Dillon

Server 2012 with Windows 10 clients - 1 client works, the other does not

Hi,

Having an odd problem with a small deployment of Remote Desktop.

Server 2012R2 RDP server, 2x Windows 10 remote clients connecting via a SonicWall VPN

All was working fine until recently, when one of the client stopped connecting. As the other client still connects, I susspected an issue with the client config. So simply wipped it and rebuilt using a from the box Windows 10 install, connected via the sonicwall, joined the domian, installed the SSL certificates.

However the issue persists. When I go to control panel->RemoteApp and desktop connections->Access RemoteApp and desktops.

Then complete the URL (identical to working PC, same case etc.) I get the ready to setup connection screen, however as soon as I click next on this screen I get "an error occured. Contact your system administrator for assistance." there is no pause whilst it goes to check the server, this error appears instantly. The pc is able to ping the RD server by name without any issues, and ns lookup correctly returns the address of the server as well.

If I replace the FQDN with the IP, then click next, after a few seconds and a progress bar, I get a certificate error  which is correct as the certificate contains the FQDN.

This suggests that the remote app setup is not able to connect to the FQDN, however, as I say it is exactly the same on the other working PC. There is no av installed yet (appart fromwindows defender) and I have tried disabling the firewall - to no avail.

I'm reluctant to change settings on the server as the other machine is still working fine.

Open to suggestions - thanks in adance for taking the ti e to read this.

RemoteApp Focus Stealing Issue

$

We have setup a single RDS 2012 R2 running a few published apps via RD web

Because these apps are for remote users only, we have a seperate RDS gateway server (2012 R2) setup as well for that purpose.

All remote users are on Win10.

At random times during the day (really no pattern to it) the remote apps the user has open will start stealing focus.

For example they might be typing a new email in their outlook (which is installed locally on the PC), while the remote app program is sitting in the background open, and it will steal focus and come to the foreground.

Here is what I've checked so far:

  • I cannot see any disconnections of the client on the event logs of the RD gateway or the RDS server.
  • I have tried the following fix without any changes:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
    "RDGClientTransport"=dword:00000001
  • This KB doesn't really apply to this problem: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2964832
  • This KB can't run on Windows 10: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2862019
  • The users have written down the exact times when this focus issue happens and I can't see any event logs on the PC or the servers that would explain this.
  • With a full desktop RDS this problem doesn't happen
  • Organising some downtime so I can install November Roll Up updates (last update was done in 02/11/2016)

I'm a bit at loss here, has anyone seen this one before?

Windows 2012R2 RemoteApp & Clipboard Redirection (doesn't work)

Hi there,

we've got Win2012R2 Server with RDP services running and some RemoteApps published for end users who use Windows 7 Pro & Windows 10.

If users log in to RDP server using mstsc.exe tool they can use clipboard redirection w/o any issues.

If the same users use a RemoteApp which works on the same server of course then clipboard redirection doesn't work for them.

If I open one of these published rdp files in a text editor I can clearly see that it has all required features enabled such as:

redirectclipboard:i:1
redirectprinters:i:1
redirectcomports:i:0
redirectsmartcards:i:0
devicestoredirect:s:*
drivestoredirect:s:*
redirectdrives:i:1

I played with group policies/local group policies on both ends without any luck.

Would be great to get any help.

Thanks!

RDS users can do everything on the RDS Server

Hi There,

I have build a new server environment for a client of mine, i have build the following servers with the following roles:

DC Server (AD/DNS/DHCP/RD Licencing)
RRAS Server (Connection Broker/Gateway/RD Web Access)
RDS Server (Session Host)
SQL Server (SQL 2014)

They are all virtual machines in HV.

The problem is that the users that login on the RDS can do everything, install/remove software, start computer management, start CMD etc.

So they have admin privileges, but they are not in any admin group! also have i looked for a simple GPO that can block these admin privileges but without luck.

What can this be and how can it be fixed?

Kind Regards,

Network Level Authentication (LSA)- Inaccurate password expired message RDP

$

Hello all,

I am having an issue with a Hyper-V host. When anyone tries to remote into the server they receive a message that"The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted". At least 3 users are Domain Admins (with recently changed passwords) so I do not believe it is the user accounts. We are able to remote into other servers without issue but this particular server does not agree that the passwords of any users is current. I have disabled NLA and I am able to get into the server but our GPO will not leave this setting turned off. Also, the VMs that are on the server are giving the same error when trying to log into them. Is there some setting that I am missing that needs to be reset so that the server does not assume that all logon attempts via RDS have an expired password?

Problem reconfiguring Remote Desktop Services after changing domains

$

Hello everyone,

I have a remote desktop services server under Windows Server 2012 that only publishes one application. All of the roles are on this server. The AD domain that this server is currently a member of is in the process of being decommissioned. I need to remove this server from its current domain and add it to the main domain and get RDS to function again. All of the AD users/groups have already been recreated on the main domain.

Since the production RDS server is a VM, I cloned it and performed all of the necessary changes and added it to the main domain so that I could test reconfiguring the RDS setup. The problem that I can't seem to get by is how to add the new server name/domain to the server pool. Under Server Manager > Remote Desktop servers > Overview I see the following message: "The following servers in this deployment are not part of the server pool: 1.old-server-name.olddomain.local The servers must be added to the server pool"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Allow log on through Terminal Services Policy is not replicating to Session Host Servers

$

So Here's my oddball issue.

We have 3 RDS session host servers: RDSHost1, RDSHost2, and RDSHost3.  We followed the wizards to set everything up, but now, we cannot get teh Group policy for "Allow log on through Terminal Services" to work on the servers.  We've provided access to a new Global Security group named "Remote Desktop Site", and enforced/link enabled the policy.  When I do the Group Policy results, the machine shows as getting the policy and having the proper values, but upon logging into the server, the members list is blank.  I've been banging my head against a wall for 3 days on this.  am I missing something?  Does RDS break RDP?

Terminal Server Farm Shortcuts Disappearing

$

I have 3 terminal servers that have been placed into a farm with load balancing. The session broker is a Server 2008 and the two members are both Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. What we have been noticing is that random users will loose their shortcuts for the application we need them to run. The application only works correctly when the application server has been mapped to the terminal server and the shortcut properties modified to have it look for the map drive and not the server address. It seems like every couple of days users will not be able to run the application because the shortcut is either gone or has reverted back to the old path. We do not have profiles turned on as we have a wide variety of OS and servers in the building. One thing that I have noticed as this seems to happen more to our employees that have to connect through a VPN. We use Cisco AnyConnect as our VPN. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to correct it?

One more thing to add is that we had a restart script for all of our terminal servers but we do not think that it is causing the problem.

Remote Desktop Connections in Server 2016 Essentials

$

I am getting ready to purchase windows server 2016 essentials for a small business. Because of our accounting system, we need to have 6 concurrent remote desktop connections to one server. We are currently running 2012r2 essential evaluation, which limits us to 2 connections. Before plunking down cash for 2016 essentials (or breaking my currently running setup to try 2016), I need to know how many remote desktop connections windows server 2016 essentials allows. Can anyone point me to documentation telling me what i need to know? Thanks in advance!
