Connecting to RDS gateway with Palo Alto FW

$

Hello,

So, I have a company that hosts a quickbooks program for us. They recently dumped Citrix (which I dont agree with, but oh well) and are using an RDS Gateway.  I can connect to the gateway , but I cannot make an RDP connection to the internal PC behind the gateway.  If I pull my PC or another PC outside my firewall and onto a basic cable modem setup, I can connect fine to both.  I am going crazy looking through Palo Alto logs because I am sure it is blocking or decrpyting something.  But, this is apparently not the case.  Anyone else have a similar situation , i.e. Palo ALto Firewalls ?

Thanks,

jeff Z

RDS always connects user to the same virtual desktop they used last time....anyway to make it random?

We have a pooled collection, so users should be randomly connected to a VM each time they login.

In reality, RDS 2012 R2 connects users to whichever virtual machine they last used, even if they logged off and it's the next day.

Is there any way to get RDS to 'forget' which machine it last connected a user to last time? and to just connect to a virtual machine at random?

desktop and app cleanup for remote desktop clients

I am new to Windows 2012R2 terminal services but have successfully installed it on a new server and is up and running but now I am trying to make it easier for my RDP users and clean up all the excess icons and such. There are three problems that I am having now;

1. users still have access to powershell even though I've turned off the group policy setting.

2. users still see all of the shortcuts if they click on the desktop 'down' arrow

3. for some reason, the users don't have a log off button anymore. I must have locked down something a little too much but I can't find the option to allow a log off

I thought of creating a separate menu but before I do that, I wanted to make sure that the full list of programs won't show up for the users if they click on the 'down' arrow.

Thanks in advance

Server 2016 RDS on 2 separate ports with different user groups accessing each

Hi there,

i currently have a RDS server running server 2008 R2, it currently is able to accept connections on 2 different ports(3389 for internal users and 5012 for external users)

in the past i set this up by exporting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp then modifying the key name in the reg file then importing it again i could then configure the security groups using RDH host configuration

however this tool no longer exists in server 2016, i have run up the new server and the connection works on 3389, i seem to be able to import a second connection but i have no way of configuring the security groups for that second connection

the reason i need this is because all users should be able to log on to the server within the office where the server lives but only some staff, such as management should be able to access it externally

thanks in advance for your help

How to migrate cals when no internet or network connectivity

Hi,

I would like to migrate 40 Cals( per user) from a server to another server. Both are running Windows 2008 R2

Right now ,  Source and target servers are on different networks. Target server has no internet connection

I'am facing two difficulties  :

I don't retrieve the mail with our agreement license number. It was during the automating cal process I tried 2 days ago.

I think this method cannot work anymore because the target server is on a different network now.

SO how can I migrate Cals from server to another one if the target server has no internet access and cannot talk with the source server ?

Hello

For Windows 2012 R2
I have a question as to the user who is not a local administrator group to enable the ability to send messages to other users who are logged on to the Terminal sessions. If you are a local administrator group has this capability. I enclose a screenshot to illustrate the problem. Where the GPO can set it up?

Thank you for your help

how to set a file extension to open with a specific application for all users?

I have a file extension lets say .abc and i want it to be open with app1. The app1 was installed on the RDS server but .abc was not part of the file associated with the program. However the program can open .abc files with no problem. I can set it manually for each user by checking the "use this app for all .abc files" option but i want it to be for all users not just one at a time. I try using the GPO and Dism export method but with no luck. I got the xml file but i don't see the .abc file extension in there. Am i suppose to add it?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

SSL for RDP

I am trying to enable SSL encryption for RDP to my Windows Server 2012 servers. I have a wildcard certificate with a private key from Digicert that is good for *.mydomain.com. The Enhanced key usage is:

Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1)
Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)

And key usage is:

Digital Signature, Key Encipherment (a0)

I put the cert in the Personal Store and the Remote Desktop Store.

To force SSL Connections I enabled the following settings in Group Policy:

Always prompt for password upon connectionEnabled
Require secure RPC communicationEnabled
Require use of specific security layer for remote (RDP) connectionsEnabled
Security Layer                                SSL (TLS 1.0)

Set client connection encryption levelEnabledEncryption Level                            High Level

Yet no matter what  I try the only cert that is offered on connection is the server's self signed one. If I delete it comes back. If I disabled it for all purposes it is used anyway.

What do I need to do to have the server use the wildcard cert from Digicert? What am I missing?

Thanks,

Jarrett

Unable to Change Screen Resolution in Remote Session - Windows Server 2012 R2

Does anybody know of a way to allow Remote Desktop users to adjust their own screen resolution in a remote session under Windows Server 2012 R2? We are struggling with this and can't seem to find a solution.

When users login to their RDP session and try to adjust their screen resolution this message is displayed in Control Panel:

"The display settings can't be changed from a remote session."

We don't want to use the "make text and other items larger or smaller" scaling feature, as this produces undesirable results with some of our applications.  We also don't want to have to support multiple types of RDP clients or RDP shortcut files.

We have looked at other posts but can't find an answer that applies to Windows Server 2012 R2.  The closest thing we could find is KB2726399, but it only applies to Server 2008.

Does anybody have a solution for Server 2012?

Thanks

RemoteApp Default Printer Redirection Not Working in Server 2016

$

We are experiencing a RemoteApp default printer redirection issue in Windows Server 2016 that we are not seeing in Windows Server 2012R2.   We have the following simple environment:

  1.       Windows Server 2012R2 with RDS Quick Start installed.
  2.       Windows Server 2016 with RDS Quick Start installed (configured identically)
  3.       Window 10 Client with attached HP printer configured as “Default” printer.

When we launch WordPad as a RemoteApp on the client (via RDWeb) and try to print a document, we see different behaviors: 1) When launched on Server 2012R2, the client’s default printer (HP printer) is shown as the default printer (expected behavior), 2) When launched on Server 2016, the server’s default printer (XPS Document) is shown as the default printer (unexpected behavior).

We’ve verified that all of the Group policies and connection settings are correct and identical between the two servers.  However we noticed the values ofHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Device keys are different:  2012R shows redirection to client printer, 2016 shows server printer.

Is this a bug in Server 2016?  Anything else we should check or configure?

Thanks,

Server 2016 RDS connections maxing out and crashing dwm.exe?

We attempted a stress load on our server and found users unable to join. The RDS would blackscreen and drop. It happened after 8 users had joined. The performance also was dropping as each connection stacked and after we saw the Event Viewer had 450+ Critical Error 1000 with dwm.exe dwmcore.dll crashing.

Desktop missing from Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Server 2012R2

$

Hi All,

I created an earlier post related to this issue but while investigating I am pretty sure the problem is much different than previously described.

A few weeks ago we published an app on our RDS server, a short time late users began reporting that that the "Desktop" (Remote Desktop) icon disappeared from the RDS web portal. We have combed all logs and found nothing that would indicate what happened to this functionality and also applied all available updates and rebooted several times since this issue. Also, am pretty sure no admins had logged into this server for months prior to this so it is doubtful any changes were made.

Since our RDS engineer recently departed I am sort of stuck on this problem and learning as I go. Initially I thought it was a MSTSC published app that disappeared and have been troubleshooting from that angle by also publishing and RDP icon to the portal which has got users back to work but has presented some limitations and other problems (redirection of printers and drives). If I now understand RDS correctly, the Desktop is a core functionality included in the RDS deployment immediately after building the first collection and before publishing any application, if I am wrong here please correct me (would also appreciate confirmation of this theory).

Been working this issue for about five days now, would appreciate any assistance from others who have had same problem.

OpenGL 4.4 support for vGPU in Windows Server 2016

Hello,

I just installed a Windows 10 Professional client in Hyper-V on a Windows Server 2016 host.

My graphics card is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1070 with the latest drivers installed.

I followed following instructions to enable OpenGL support:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/31771.experience-guide-for-enabling-opengl-support-for-vgpu-in-server-2016.aspx

Unfortunately I only get OpenGL 1.1 instead of 4.4.

Is there anything else to set up in order to get OpenGL 4.4 running?

Thanks a lot for all your help!

Best regards,
Marco

Remote Desktop Connections in Server 2016 Essentials

I am getting ready to purchase windows server 2016 essentials for a small business. Because of our accounting system, we need to have 6 concurrent remote desktop connections to one server. We are currently running 2012r2 essential evaluation, which limits us to 2 connections. Before plunking down cash for 2016 essentials (or breaking my currently running setup to try 2016), I need to know how many remote desktop connections windows server 2016 essentials allows. Can anyone point me to documentation telling me what i need to know? Thanks in advance!

Issue with User Profile Disk in RDS 2012 and Excel files

Hi All,

Very strange issue.

I have brand new RDS server 2012 R2 without User Profile Disks (UPD) enabled - all excel files are working fine.

Once i enable the UPD some excel files are not opening and the error is "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened".

If I remove the UPD, the same excel files are opened without a problem. This is with Excel 2013. Tried to reinstall the Office, check the permissions of the UPD location - everything seems fine.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

$

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?
