Windows server 2016 - Software Restriction Policies - Designated File Types

$

Hi

After applying a software restriction policy GPO, servermanagerlauncher.exe won't run.

This program is scheduled to run "At logon of any user" (rather Administrators) and it returns the popup error "This file does not have a program associated with it". ???

Any other executable runs fine, in particular ServerManager.exe runs well.

This GPO reset the list of "Designated File Type", in which EXE is present.

This GPO was set (a long time ago for W2008 RDS) to remove LNK (i.e. shortcuts) from the Designated Files Types. So any shortcut can be run from anywhere (i.e user's dekstop), while the real executables (Designated File types) are allowed only from specific locations (Basically C:Windows\ and c: \program files).

What's specific with servermanagerlauncher.exe ?

Windows server 2016 RDS - Printer driver installation

Double clicking on a print server queue, a regular user can trigger installation of a printer drivers through "point and print".

This shouldn't be allowed. Only administrators should have rights to write (or trigger writing) in C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\

At least this was not allowed in W2008 R2 RDS.

Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Services Create Session Error: Unable to configure RD Session Host Server

When creating RDS Quick Deploy, then trying to add a collection, I get an error:

Unable to configure RD Session Host Server <Server Name>. Invalid operation.

I've set every property I know, have a valid Licensed server, a wildcard Certificate installed properly, everything looks good. I've been three (3) days on this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

RD Gateway Credential Delegation?

$

WS2012 RDSHs and WS2012 RD Gateway. Clients mostly Windows 10 Pro. All fully patched.

Users connect via webfeed-published RemoteApps.

Credential Delegation is set up and working on the LAN.

On WAN, when accessed from the same domain users on the same domain computers, with connections through RD Gateway, the RDG prompts for credentials. Users enter their domain credentials and connection proceeds. SSO is working; they're not prompted again as long as at least one RemoteApp is open.

In Deployment Properties, these options are set under Gateway, but I don't think this is where this would be set:

  • Server name: remote.domainname.com (resolves externally and internally to the RDG).
  • Logon method: Password Authentication
  • Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers: On
  • Bypass RD Gateway server for local computers: On

I enabled Credential Delegation on the RDG as a test, but was still prompted for credentials.

Is it possible to set up the RDG for credential delegation?

Change DPI scaling inside RDP session (2008 R2 / 2012 R2)

We have two servers:

  • Server 2012 R2 RDS
  • Server 2008 R2 RDS

Users are constantly reporting being unable to change their screen resolution. After some digging, the reason they're trying to change the resolution is because their text is too small to see. DPI scaling is obviously the answer, but when users go into the setting it is greyed out and cannot be changed.

Now, for Server 2008 R2, I've found this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2726399/en-us

Does this hotfix actually do what I suspect/hope/blindly-pray it will do? Does it re-enable the DPI options if connected via RDP? The article doesn't actually say what it does, just that it will "fix" the issue.

Next, for Server 2012 R2, I've found this link:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/06/13/remote-desktop-services-what-s-new-in-windows-server-2012-release-candidate.aspx

The second last section mentions "Support for Changing DPI in Remote Sessoins." Having logged into this RDS server, this is not the case, the setting is greyed out just like in Server 2008 R2.

  1. What needs to be done to get this working on both platforms? My end result is I want users to log in and be able to go into the preferences, move the DPI slider to their desired text size and fix their problem without resorting to workarounds like decreasing the resolution of their local PC to increase the apparent size of text.
  2. If this isn't possible, is there a way to configure RDS to run at a lower resolution permanently but to stretch to fit any screen resolution? Right now, if you drop the resolution on an RDP session, it just takes up part of the user's screen. In the newest RDP clients, I notice the Smart Sizing option, but it apparently isn't "smart" enough to stretch higher than the base resolution of the session.

I've looked through literally years of forum posts and articles and nothing seems to point at a user-friendly fix such as take the slider, choose your size, done.

Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions

I do not find this option.
Configure Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions.

This link (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771538%28v=ws.11%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) is about the process in Win server 2012. And here (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725700(v=ws.11).aspx) remotely control a user session.

How to specify multiple RDS License Servers with powershell?

$

Hi,

Is there any way to specify multiple RDS License Servers (or add an additional one) with powershell?

Tried:

$obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("srv-rds-lic01.local.net","srv-rds-lic02.local.net")

and:

$obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("srv-rds-lic01.local.net,srv-rds-lic02.local.net")

Specifying one entry works without any issues.

Thanks.

Problem Installing RD Session host Role Service on single 2012 Foundation as a DC

Hi,

After looking at other threads, I couldn't find an direct answer to this problem.

For a very SMB client (max 5 RDP sessions, first and only server) I'm trying to install a single box running  WS2012 Foundation  (single DC) as recommended in this KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839) and I'm stuck in step 8 while trying to configure the Remote Desktop Session Host role with to use the localRemote Desktop Licensing server.

The Powershell command fails with the following errors:

PS C:\Users\Administrateur> $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("LicServer")
Exception lors de l'appel de « SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList » : «  »

+ $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("LicServer")

Windows Server 2008 WEB will not allow KB3080079 to run and it is required to disable TLS 1.0 so RDP still works

$

Windows Server 2008 WEB will not allow KB3080079 to run and it is required to disable TLS 1.0.  Also please note that this is Windows Web Server 2008...on SP2

When I disable TLS 1.0 and enable TLS 1.2, it not only breaks RDP, but it also prevents access to my website (built on C#).

When I try to run KB3080079 I get a message that says update does not apply to your system. I also already tried KB3140245 with the same result...does not apply.

How am I supposed to meet PCI compliance if Microsoft's update to fix this will not run on my licensed and PAID FOR product?

Can someone from MS tech support please help here before I go out of business?

Thanks

Multiple RDS deployments same forest

The setup has:
-2x 2012R2 server with the session host role configured
-1x 2012R2 server with the gateway, webaccess and connection broker installed
-1x domain controller
-1x application server running a SQL database

A application is published on the RD Web Access server, the users are only using the remote app to connect.
-The web access URL: tenant.fabrikam.com
-The gateway URL: tenant.fabrikam.com

The plan is to setup a multitenant environment, the others customers need to access a different domain/URL, for example:  tenant.contoso.com

An option would be to add a second RD Web access website to the existing RD Web Access server, however the preferred way is to add a second RD Web Access server. But the problem is the RD Gateway is also installed on the same server and has the wildcard certificate.

For the reason above i think the best option is to deploy a new RDS infrastructure (Gateway, Web Access, Connection Broker and Session hosts) that uses the same AD domain and is able to use the same application server.

Is it possible to deploy multiple remote desktop services in the same forest?

Corrupt Windows 2012 RDS Basic Color Scheme

$

We have one Windows 2012 R2 server that has been functioning fine up to a couple of weeks ago.  After a reboot the screen colors went haywire.  It seems somehow the “Windows Basic” color scheme got corrupted. Black text becomes yellow text. White backgrounds become black backgrounds. The right-hand scroll bar becomes black with white outline. And in some cases white text will replace black text on a white background, rendering the window contents invisible.

Following a number of suggestions online I have been able to get this server back where users can use it.  What I have read online indicates that a reboot (due to MS Updates or whatever other reason) could cause this corruption again.

What I want to know - has MS come out with a permanent fix for this issue?  Just because the basic color scheme gets corrupted is no reason to have to reload a server (one suggestion I found online).  As I see things, this should be a situation like installing a new updated graphics driver to fix a resolution issue.

What about it MS?  Care to pipe in with your thoughts on this matter?

What does the community have to say?  I am hoping you tell me there is at least a hot fix for this.

Thanks

Is there a way to locate my Remote Desktop Licensing Server?

Hello,

Let me give you some context:) I'm new in a company. We have a medium size environment and we still use Server 2003 Terminal Server for user access.

We've added a few 2012 RDS Servers to replace the old TSs and ran into a brick wall with licensing.

As far as I know, there is/was a licensing server hidden somewhere, but I don't know where.

Is there a way to locate that server? A Powershell command maybe?

Or if I connect to a 2003 TS, is there a way to find out who issued its license?

Unable to Publish apps

Hi Everyone,

I recently stood up a 2012R2 server and setup remote desktop services.  Since this was for testing, I installed all roles on (1) server.  I set it up and published apps needed as of yesterday (1/4/2017).  Today I can no longer publish any apps.  I can modify them or remove them, just cannot add a new one.  When I attempt to publish a new one I get:

The following requirements should be met for the RD Session Host Servers in the collection:

1. You must be an administrator on the RD Session Host Server ( I am Domain Admin, which is added to the local admin group)

2. The RD Session Host server is running. (One server runs all roles and all services show running)

I can still access the RDWeb portal and launch applications. I did find one forum mentioning the need to license Office 2013.  I went and installed my license, but it did not resolve the issue.

No changes were done on this server during the time mentioned.  I also am the only one with access to it.  I do have some event log errors:

1. ID: 20499:  I am assuming this is just Remote desktop trying to map user drives and redirected folders and it is failing.

2. ID 2056: The Remote Desktop Connection Broker server could not enumerate the targets for the provider named NULL from the database.

I have also uninstalled all roles and reinstalled w/ same results.  Although this time when I reinstalled, the default published apps were not there. (notepad, paint, etc).  I must be missing something.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can't change RDWeb password for non-admin accounts

$

I have enabled the password change option for Remote Desktop Web Services in Server 2008 R2 and applied the necessary hotfixes. I can change admin passwords, but am unable to change any user/non-admin passwords. When I do, I get the following error message:

Your new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of your domain. Try choosing a different new password.

No matter how complex I make the password, it still gives me that error. I understand that I may be able to change the "Password must meet complexity requirements" group policy option, but is that the only way? Even then, why wouldn't a very secure password work for non-admin accounts?

Hello,

Can we use high availability with two servers.

one server hold All RDS server roles(Licence, Session host, Connection Broker, Gateway).

I referred on Internet for guidance. But most articles have provided details to use two or more server for one RDS role.

It's high cost solution and most of organization consider cost effective solution.

If anyone know best cost effective solution, Please provide that.

RDS 2016 blue screen and issue with UmRdpService

$

Hi

I have created a new infrastructure on Windows Server 2016 (French) :

- 1 DC

- 1 Broker RDS

- 2 RDS

- 1 RDS Web Access

I use the fonctionnality User Profile Disks for RDS

My first issue is a random reboot with a blue screen. Exactly the same issue that this post

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/cf843781-195e-418f-a124-5e40dee0d901/windows-server-2016-crashes-with-error-in-rdbsssys?forum=ws2016

As indicated, i turned off drive redirection in my GPO and since problem stopped.

I hope Microsoft will release a fix quickly.

Now i have a second issue where i don't find documentation to solve it.

Randomly on each RDS Server, no remote desktop connection can be established, i have a black screen after login to RDS Server.

In system event i have the error

Event ID: 7011 A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from theUmRdpService service

I'm tried to reboot the RDS Service but the service doesn't restart.Currently i reboot the server but i want to fix this problem.

On Windows Server 2012R2, i finded the KB3047296 but it's not for my OS.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3047296

I don't know if my two issues are linked but i need help to solve it.

Thank you for your help

Best Regards

Hi All

I have just installed an RDS solution for one of my customers, I am now in the process of creating a document outlining the schematics and infrastructure, basically what is RDS and how it works.

Is there any template that I can use that will help me create this document?
