W2016 - RemoteFX setup for fluid video rendering and low cpu

Hi,

I noticed that w2016 RDSSH (virtual machine non-hyper-v) will uses twice as much cpu than w2008 r2 when rendering video. That's a big disappointement.

There is a RemoteFX GPO for W2008 R2 to set frame rate and video quality. I had set for a fluid video rendering (i.e. High frame rate and medium video quality). Watching videos is not at all the main purpose of my servers and the service is fair enough w/ w2008 r2.

Is there a similare setup for W2016 ? Or any other tweak to get fluid video and low cpu ? (Network bandwidth is not a problem. All clients are 100Mb/full)

Server 2012 refusing RDP admin connection (no licensing)

Hello, I am trying to remote into Windows Server 2012, which I did for months, but am now getting this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license"

How can I fix this and why do I need a license server? I just want to log in to do administration, which doesn't require a CAL per below.

Do I have to acquire RDS CALs if I am only remotely administering Windows Server operating systems by using
Remote Desktop for Administration?

No. Up to two users may connect to the Windows Server operating system simultaneously to perform administrative
functions without needing any RDS CALs. Additional administrative users need the appropriate RDS CALs.

I am stuck right now. Any pointers please?

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

We have a Windows 2012 RDS environment.

Currently, when we connect to a host from outside of the company, we see the attached message.  Connect from a LAN computer is fine.  Please advise where we should look at.

Thanks.

RDS 2012 R2 - Windows Search crashing/zombie sessions

Hello,

I have a 2012 R2 RDS farm consisting of three session host servers.  I'm having a problem where the Windows Search service will crash at random and cause user sessions to not disconnect properly, leaving them in a zombie state with no username associated to the session owner.  This also prevents those users from logging back on; they see a "Please wait for the Remote Desktop Services..." message.  I have to kill the search service process in order for the zombie sessions to clear so the server can continue working normally.  Windows Search was installed to allow users to search from Outlook 2013 in cached mode (we use O365).  I've patched the servers up to the December 2016 update rollup, but I am still facing this issue.  Is there any guidance on how to troubleshoot this issue or possibly fix it?

Thank you.

Hello all

We have the following scenario:

web < - > intranet <->RD farm (3 hosts) <->app server

When we are logged on the app and we try to open an image file from the app server, we got an error message saying the file can not be opened.

We have already turn the  server upside down and have not discovered what is going wrong.

Suspects on DLL incompatibility.

Thank you

Windows 2016 Server RDWEB - Office 2016 RemoteApp (access via Windows 10 Pro)

I have a Remote Desktop Host Session setup using Windows 2016 Server and install Office 2016 Standard on to the server. I configured RDWEB on the server for client that are using Internet Explorer in Windows 10 Pro to access all RemoteApp advertised via RDWEB.

The issue is that when I launch any Office Application (e.g. Word, Excel, etc), the windows of the app is in maximize state but it is not in full screen where there is a small gap on top and left side of the windows. The windows looks a little bit off and I can see the status bar is behind the task bar of the client machine (screenshot - hxxps://1drv.ms/i/s!AkDMTDPrqMYAhagiH1G0hmXD-7V2sA).

Other RemoteApp such as Internet Explorer, Paint, and all other 3rd party application works fine and get a full screen without the gap when maximize the application window. The only issue is with all Office 2016 application.

Note that I have tried to fresh installed all the component (Windows 2016 Standard Server, Office 2016 Standard and Windows 10 Pro) to avoid any other probability.

The issue does appear if I'm using the same setup / configuration but with Windows 2012 R2 Server as Remote Desktop Host.

Appreciate some help from the expert here. Thank you. :)

Hi

I am trying to pass a long URL by using custom RDP file (remoteapplicationcmdline). (IE as publish App)

The url size is 950 length.

I can see that it is being shorten.

1. Can you please update what is the current length limit ?

2. Do you have any planned hotfix (I am using Windows 2012 R2 RemoteApp).
I already saw the following ... (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cf8926df-7929-4030-af35-bdfa4cdbee29/remoteapplicationcmdlines-size-limit?forum=winserverTS)

For the past 3 years, <g class="gr_ gr_155 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="155" id="155">Iv'e</g> been running RDS using Hyper-V on a Win 2012 R2 Server.  I have 10 virtual machines always running, however, I have 30 machines created (so, 20 are off).  One of the machines running is a Win 2008 R2 server that is my KMS server for activation.  I have 15 machines that are the bare minimum of Win 7 requirements, which I call Private-1, 2, 3, etc...  Those are off and not activated either.

Now, 2 years ago, I had <g class="gr_ gr_186 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="186" id="186">a MS</g> engineer help me set this up.  At the time, he claimed I needed a certain # of machines running for KMS to work.  I know nothing about KMS.  Never used it, never learned it.  So I took his word for it.  I built out my VM structure.  I had about 10 computers for remote users.  Over time, that's dropped to 7 and the users use their machines daily.  Rarely do I have problems with those <g class="gr_ gr_190 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="190" id="190">vm's</g>.

Now I'm making 2 new machines for 2 new remote users.  Sounds simple enough.  I have a <g class="gr_ gr_156 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="156" id="156">vm</g> template that is <g class="gr_ gr_162 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-del replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="162" id="162">of </g>a pre-configured Windows 7 Enterprise machine.  I make the 2 machines.  Fix them up a little.  Their good to go.

I have a few collections created to keep things organized.  They are Personal Unmanaged pools.  Users are assigned to their own machine manually (by me) and it's worked great - until today.

Today, I created a new collection for the new machines.  We'll call it "Certs" and I added the two computers:  Cert1 and Cert2.  I assign the users to their computers:  user1 gets <g class="gr_ gr_180 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="180" id="180">Cert1</g> computer.  User2 gets <g class="gr_ gr_181 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="181" id="181">Cert2</g> computer.  So far, it's identical to my other collections.

Everything is up and running.  I log into my RDWeb site as user1.  I see the collection there.  Click it.  NEVER connects to the computer.  Hmm, log off.  Log as one of the users I set up 2 years ago.  I can get right into their computer.  Okay, log as in user2.  See the collection.  Same - never connects.

I start poking around and run the RD Licensing Diagnoser.  <g class="gr_ gr_195 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="195" id="195">First</g> thing I see:  Red X saying "Licenses are not available for this Remote Desktop Session Host server, and RD Licensing Diagnoser has identified problems for the RD Session Host server."  The detailed problem is:

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per Device licensing mode and VM Redirector Mode, but license server <my server> does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
Licensing mode: Per Device
License type: RDS CALs, VDI Standard Suite licenses or VDI Premium Suite licenses

So first, what does that even mean?  Second, where can I go to see the # of licenses I have and/or need?

When I log into the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (I have a volume license for all this remote stuff), I see I bought 10 VDA SNGL SubsVL OLV NL 1Mth AP PerDvc licenses.  I believe this a "per device."  Bought those back in 2014. Expired on 01/31/2017 (but that's never impacted anything.  I manage several other volume licenses for other people and their stuff expired back in 2010, yet we're still able to install Office or Windows 7 with no issues).

Do I have a license problem since I'm way over my 10 per device?  When I go to my RD Licensing Manager and generate a report (<g class="gr_ gr_157 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="157" id="157">csv</g> file), it just tells me "No CALs are installed or issued on this License Server."  That doesn't make sense.  I have a license from Microsoft.  In my RD License Manager, there is a green check mark next to my server.

And this all leads me to not being able to connect to a new <g class="gr_ gr_154 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="154" id="154">vm</g>.

Any ideas on what's going on here?  Do I need to buy more CAL licenses?  Can I free some up for computers that have been killed off?  <g class="gr_ gr_177 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="177" id="177">Sorry</g> this was so long, but I just wanted to cover all my bases asking for help here.

Thank you kindly for your reply back too.

Errors on Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Role installation - Server 2012

Getting errors when trying to install the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role on a new server running Server 2012 Std.

Simple network with Domain Controller services running on a SBS-2011 Std server, and this new Server 2012 RDS function to run on this new server. All RDS roles are to be installed on the Server 2012 server.

2012 Server has been joined to domain as a member server without problem.

Problem is installing the RDS role on the 2012 Server.

Following the install flow of "Quick Start | Session Virtualization". It begins installing the RD Connection Broker - RD Web Access and RD Session host. Gets about 1/3rd way  into the "Remote Desktop Services Role Services" and reboots. Comes back up and attempts to continue but fails to fully install:

Remote Desktop Srvice role services: Succeeded

Session Collection: Failed (unable to create the session collection)

RemoteApp programs: Cancelled

I was attempting to follow this write-up as looked fairly straightforward and well documented, but getting this error condition on the very initial stages of getting this RDS role installed.

http://blog.concurrency.com/infrastructure/rds8-quick-and-easy-remoteapp-on-windows-server-2012/

I found another thread on technet on this same issue, but the issue was never documented as to  what the fix was.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/b79cb8f8-9522-4735-bce1-4af973a4de23/

Looking for suggestions on how to approach resolving this issue as aside from the above technet article, I'm not finding much information out there on how to resolve.

Thank you.

Lots of 4625 Errors generated by RD Gateway

Hi all,

I've got a gateway server setup feeding two RDS servers (RDS1 and RDS2) and currently RDS2 is getting tonnes of 6425 errors from the gateway server (App01).

There are thousands of these being generated every day, all different ports, I used ProcMon to trace it back to the tssdis.exe program on App01.

Here's the event:

An account failed to log on.

Subject:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account Name: -
Account Domain:-
Logon ID: 0x0

Logon Type:3

Account For Which Logon Failed:
Security ID: NULL SID
Account Name: APP01
Account Domain:ROBINSON

Failure Information:
Failure Reason:Unknown user name or bad password.
Status: 0xC000006D
Sub Status: 0xC0000064

Process Information:
Caller Process ID:0x0
Caller Process Name:-

Network Information:
Workstation Name:APP01
Source Network Address:192.168.17.11
Source Port: 54185

Detailed Authentication Information:
Logon Process:NtLmSsp
Authentication Package:NTLM
Transited Services:-
Package Name (NTLM only):-
Key Length: 0

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remote Desktop to Windows 2003 Server SP2 when Domain Controller is unavailable

$

I know this is a Win2008 forum, but I found a problem with Windows Server 2003 SP2 which might still be in Win2008, and I wanted others to avoid the same problem.

The problem: domain-member Windows Server 2003 SP2 machines prevent cilents from connecting via Remote Desktop unless the server can contact the domain-- even if the server has cached credentials available for the domain account the client is trying to use.  This domain-disconnected case is probably common in Home Office scenarios, where machines occasionally connect to the domain (via RAS) but generally log in via cached credentials.

Windows XP doesn't have the same problem, nor did (I'm nearly certain) Windows Server RTM.  Somewhere along the way of patches and service packs, I believe my server lost the ability to use cached domain credentials for authenticating a Remote Desktop session.

The error I get in the Remote Desktop client is this:
The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted

On the server's event log, I get two errors: one in the Application Log and one in the System Log.  Below are the contents of those events (I removed domain & acocunt names for privacy)

- #1: NETLOGON event ID = 5719 in the System Log:
This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain [DOMAIN] due to the following:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

- #2: NETLOGON event ID = 1219 in the Application Log:
Logon rejected for [DOMAIN\ACCOUNT]. Unable to obtain Terminal Server User Configuration. Error: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Anyway, I'm going to post the answer in a follow-up post so I can mark it as the answer. :-)

Why we dont have access to the RDS Listener and its properties in Windows Server 2016 / 2012 as we found its ease of manage terminal server properties in Windows Server 2008 RDS?

$

In Windows Server 2008 / R2 we had access to RDS Listener properties by choosing administration tools -> remote desktop services -> remote desktop session host configuration -> right click -> properties on the RDP-tcp connection. This help us in many way while we are in troubleshooting issues related to RDS service like recreate the listener, managing RDS configuration from one place. However in Windows Server 2012 / R2 / 2016 version those settings were scattered into different places and in case if i like to recreate the listener then the only feasible solution is to merge the registry key from a good machine. I used to recreate it easily if i have a Windows Server 2008 / R2. Do we have any other method to achieve the same? Also i like to know why the new interface is having such limitation?
