Multiple BACKUP-0 Folders on 2012 R2 Terminal Servers using UPD

Since moving to user profile disks (UPD) on Server 2012 R2 we've noticed that when users are disconnected there is something that is not allowing the user profiles to fully dismount causing a lot of BACKUP-0 and BACKUP-1 folders in the C:\Users directory.

What can we do to identify what is causing this and resolve it?

Thanks

Server 2012 R2 CAL Report Problem

$

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to use  powershell "Invoke-WmiMethod -Class Win32_TSLicenseReport -Name GenerateReportEx" to generate PU CAL reports, and it works fine on my test license server. However on the production license server there seems to be an issue. Firstly when I manually generate a CAL report in the RD License Manager, it doesn't have a date as name, and instead it's named as "unknown".  The generated report can also sometimes disappear as soon as it generated (but not always), which is very strange.

So if the report is there and is named as "unknown" instead of the proper date name, the powershell "get-item RDS:\LicenseServer\IssuedLicenses\PerUserLicenseReports\report name" cannot see any generated reports. Apparently the report can only  be seen in the above RDS: provider when it has a proper date name.

So do you guys have any ideas why the report is named "unknown" and sometimes disappears as soon as it's generated?

So far I came across one post by another user on here, who also had the "unknown" report name issue, and the only way he fixed it, is by wiping down the CAL database and building\ installing a new one (basically rebuilding CAL server). But I don't want to do it just yet, and want to find a way to fix it without rebuilding the CAL server.

Any ideas?

remote desktop services - from server 2008 to server 2012

Hello,

We are currently using a server machine (application server) that has windows server 2008 R2 installed. When I view the licensing detail on Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center, it shows Product Family as Windows Remote Desktop Services - User CAL, version 2008, and Effective Quantity 4.

We joined this application server machine running windows server 2008 R2 to our domain controller machine running windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter. When I view the licensing details for windows server 2012, it shows Product Family as Windows Server Datacenter - 2 Proc, version 2012 R2, and Effective Quantity 1.

The issue that we are facing is when the application server was not connected to domain controller, it was possible for 4 users to concurrently access the application server running WS2008. However, when the application server joined the domain controller, only 2 users are able to concurrently access the application. Is it possible that we could migrate our Windows Remote Desktop Services - User CAL of Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012? It would enable us to connect 4 users concurrently to the application server. I need to find a way to re-register 4 RDS licenses.

Shehzad

Restrict users from opening important apps from published desktop.

Hi

In our Windows 2012 RDS environment, we are publishing desktop for a group of users.  I'd like to restrict logon users only able to see or open certain applications only.  Some shortcut such as power shell or command prompt, we do not want them to open.

Would someone give me a guideline as for how to do this in GPO?

Thanks.

Single server setup - Remote Desktop Gateway not tunneling 3389 through 443 - Windows 2012 R2

Hi all,

I comment to my RDweb environment over 443. When i click on an app, it prompts me to login, and then it runs the app in a window.  The odd thing is that it connects over 3389.  I know this because if i block 3389 between my client and my server, my client can still connect to RDWeb, but cannot run a remoteapp.

With a Remote Desktop Gateway, my understanding was that all i needed was 443 between my client and my server.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Remote Desktop Licensing Manager lists one more license issued than is being used

New Windows Server 2016 Standard installation

Single server for domain, so all roles on same server: File Server, DNS, AD DS and Remote Desktop Services.

Remote Desktop services installed via add roles, Licensing and Session Host only, without Connection Broker.

I used the PowerShell commands from the single server RDS configuration that was meant for WS 2012:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2833839/guidelines-for-installing-the-remote-desktop-session-host-role-service-on-a-computer-running-windows-server-2012-without-the-remote-desktop-connection-broker-role-service

Licensing Diagnoser shows no errors, and Licensing Manager shows the correct number of 10 CALS, configured as Per User. However, the number of issued licenses is always listed as being one more than are actually in use, i.e. 2 with one user and 3 with two users.

I found a section in gpedit that looks like I could have used it rather than powershell, in computer configuration/administrative templates/windows components/remote desktop services/remote desktop session host/licensing to specify the licensing server and licensing mode. They were listed as Not Configured, so I changed them to match the actual settings. This didn't change the mismatch between actually issued licenses and the number of issued licenses in license manager.

1) Why aren't the actual number of unused CALs being displayed?

2) Shouldn't I have been able to go directly to the relevant sections in computer configuration to specify the license server and licensing mode? My searches on TechNet only resulted in the article referenced above.

Thanks

RD Security

My company has several Cloud computers that we access using Cisco Cloud VPN and then we open Remote Desktop. When RD is running, does that automatically give reverse access to all the personal files on my computer so that someone on my Company's side can access the computer I am running it on?

Lock down RDS desktop.

Hi,

We have setup a new Windows 2012 RDS environment and we will do published-desktop for a group of users.

If I want to create a GPO to restrict users from accessing critical system shortcuts such as Control Panel, CMD, Powershell, and also lock down securities for regular users, would someone suggest a good link to do it?

Our AD are running on Windows Server 2008.

Many thanks.

RD Web Access Password change error

I'm trying to implement RD web access so users can change their passwords however it keeps coming up with:

"Your new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of your domain. Try choosing a different new password."

I've enabled logging but that's all I got from the log too. It finds the user so it does communicate with AD fine.

The password I tried definitely meets the complexity requirements. Are there any GPOs I need to configure for this to work?

Using server 2012 R2 with all windows updates installed.

Licensing servers in a forest/tree environment

Hello,

Can Licensing servers installed in the forest root be used from the subdomains (with two-way trust enabled)?

Say our forest root domain is local.net. We installed a pair of licensing servers, activated, and added required number of licenses. Can we use those servers from dev.local.net subdomain as well?

PS: Everything is under Windows 2012 R2.

Thank you.

RemoteApp GPO is not applying for users without local admin access

My organization is planning on deploying AX 2012 R3 Client via RemoteApp for all our users. I am currently testing this out with RDS installed on a single Windows 2012 R2 Server, but in the future I will set up a new Server 2016 RDS environment for this.

I am having issues publishing the RemoteApp URL via GPO to my users. It will only work if the user has local administrator access on their PC. This cant be how it's supposed to work? I am planning on deploying this to hundreds of users! If the user manually adds it into the Control Panel Item it works. They are asked to log on once, and they just use their own credentials and it works fine.

The event log tells me this. "Windows failed to apply the {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} settings. {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information" link."

Notes:
- I have figured out that the GUID the RemoteApp settings.
- The GPO shows up as an applied GPO in gpresult /h.
- I am sure I have seen the error "access denied" somewhere but I cant remember where now.

Reference to this thread where another admin had similar issue: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/21362dc1-24be-48ff-8447-2ca80d068d8c/rds-remoteapp-url-gpo?forum=winserverGP#21362dc1-24be-48ff-8447-2ca80d068d8c

Anyone have a clue of what may cause this? Why does this only work for users with local administrator access? Is there maybe some other GPO that blocks it?

Mstsc log off session

Hello.

I have 2 types of computer (15 machines in all) under windows 7 pro 64 which connect in TSE on a Windows Server 2012 via scheduled tasks at 8h55 and disconnected in the same way at 9pm.

One of these types of post (7 machines out of the 15) disconnects in case of inactivity on the server.

I realize this by doing a "Query session" on the server.

I checked in:

Application logs and services \ Microsoft \ Windows \ TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager \ Operational on a Sunday when all compurter are inactive.

The session log off occurs after 2h - 3h - 4h never the same but always round hour (not 1H15 min..)

The Gpo server side is the same for everyone so I deduce that it does not come from the server.

I have of course set my power modes by removing the hard drive / shutdown.

If I take control of a computer client with Teamviewer that "query session" show log off, i seemy session server screen but nothing reacts and finally the screen change and ask me for my login / password session.

So the mstsc doesn't close but it end connection after round hour time.

I tried a scheduled tasks that ping an ip every 30 min but doesn't change anything.

Any suggestion ?

Sorry for my bad english

RDS Windows 2012 SSO question

Sorry mods; posted this originally in Win10/Security first but the question may be more relevant here?

Hi,

We're running the following:
*Win 10 Ent 1607 (Current Servicing Branch)
*Win 2012 RDS that is accessed by internal users only.

Issue:
SSO works fine from either a deployed published shortcut or via the Web Access server. However, as soon as Credential Guard is enabled SSO fails. Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks,
Kevin

Problem with printer drivers

$

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 Terminal Server server. Clients connects to it with RDP, to use Office applications and view PDF Files. The server has a number of different printer drivers installed. For example:

- HP Laserjet 500

- HP color Laserjet 200

- HP Universal Printer Driver PCL5.

And about ten more drivers.

Clients connect to server and have diferent printers, each with each driver. The problem is that, whatever model of printer the client has, with whatever driver it has installed, the mapped printer in the server takes the HP 500 Driver. So every single printer mapped in the server, is being mapped with the HP 500 driver, despite the server has installed the correct driver for all the printers.

How can I achieve that if I use in a client a printer which driver is installed on the server, the server maps the printer with the correct driver instead of the HP 500?

Hi, I have Windows 2008R2 with RDS and all updates installed.

When I'm connecting from any client I don't have local printers/disks in my terminal session. I'm able to open \\tsclient in terminal session, but it's empty. Also there is no errors in EventViewer.

I checked all GPO (many times), checked all settings in rdp-client, checked all settings in RDS HOST configuration. Everything looks fine.

Clipboard is working. Second server (w2003) in the same OU is working normaly.

could somebody help me?

Documentation Request RDS Prerequisites / Single Server Setup

Hi,

the RDS sites https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/ee236407.aspx and https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831447(v=ws.11).aspx lists some articles for 2012 R2, other links even end at 2008 suggestions. The 2016 documentation is not up to date there.

I am searching for the current statement about installing the Session Host on a Domain Controller. Is it officially supported but not recommended like in this link:https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742817.asp in Server 2012 / Server 2016 ?

Or did Microsoft consequentially drop this Scenario? I cannot find a hint in the role requirements.

KR,

Matschek
